01 Jan 2009TL;DR: An integrated framework for knowledge management is presented by combining data mining (DM) tools and technologies with CBR methodologies to discover, validate, retain, reuse and share knowledge in an organization with its internal users as well as its external users.
Abstract: Over the last decade data warehousing and data mining tools have evolved from research into a unique and popular applications, ranging from data warehousing and data mining for decision support to business intelligence and other kind of applications. The chapter presents and discusses data warehousing methodologies along with the main components of data mining tools and technologies and how they all could be integrated together for knowledge management in a broader sense. Knowledge management refers to the set of processes developed in an organization to create, extract, transfer, store and apply knowledge. The chapter also focuses on how data mining tools and technologies could be used in extracting knowledge from large databases or data warehouses. Knowledge management increases the ability of an organization to learn from its environment and to incorporate knowledge into the business processes by adapting to new tools and technologies. Knowledge management is also about the reusability of the knowledge that is being extracted and stored in the knowledge base. One way to improve the reusability is to use this knowledge base as front-ends to case-based reasoning (CBR) applications. The chapter further focuses on the reusability issues of knowledge management and presents an integrated framework for knowledge management by combining data mining (DM) tools and technologies with CBR methodologies. The purpose of the integrated framework is to discover, validate, retain, reuse and share knowledge in an organization with its internal users as well as its external users. The framework is independent of application domain and would be suitable for uses in areas, such as data mining and knowledge management in e-government. DOI: 10.4018/978-1-60566-230-5.ch001

TL;DR: The authors summarizes the fullness of Follett's thinking and discusses the manner in which she is frequently misinterpreted in the literature, arguing that these misunderstandings are due to a lack of awareness of, or ability to grasp, her underlying relational process ontology.
Abstract: Mary Follett was both a woman in public service in myriad roles from social worker to presidential advisor and a female public intellectual giving voice to what would later be called a feminist perspective. Based on a forthcoming book, this paper summarizes the fullness of Follett’s thinking and discusses the manner in which she is frequently misinterpreted in the literature, arguing that these misunderstandings are due to a lack of awareness of, or ability to grasp, her underlying relational process ontology. Misinterpretations in both the management and public administration literature are considered, ending with a call for scholars in both specializations to reconsider their interpretations from a more in-depth understanding of her work.

TL;DR: In this paper, it was shown that if firms borrow at an interest rate that is greater than the rate at which they can lend, the value of a firm declines with the amount borrowed.
Abstract: This paper shows that, if firms borrow at an interest rate that is greater than the rate at which they can lend, the value of a firm declines with the amount borrowed. The model assumes the possibility that a firm may go bankrupt, which introduces the need for financial intermediation. A modified version of the homemade lev-erage examples introduced by Modigliani and Miller [2] is used to introduce the concept. A state-preference model is used for a more formal proof.

TL;DR: In this article, a consumer comparison of fresh tofu and frozen tofu, and the investigation of consumer perceptions of and responses to, both products was carried out, which indicated that many consumers are unfamiliar with the product, yet tofu is perceived to be an acceptable food for those inclined to use soy-based products, as well as those who are otherwise healthy eating conscious.
Abstract: This article focuses on a consumer comparison of fresh tofu and frozen tofu, and the investigation of consumer perceptions of and responses to, both products. A literature review of consumer perceptions and attitudes toward soy products was carried out. Consumer perceptions and affect were then qualitatively investigated using separate focus groups composed of “soy-users” and “health conscious” consumers. Extensive taste tests of the product, using five different recipes, comparing and contrasting frozen versus fresh forms of tofu were conducted to obtain sensory evaluations. The results indicate that many consumers are unfamiliar with the product, yet tofu is perceived to be an acceptable food for those inclined to use soy-based products, as well as those who are otherwise healthy eating conscious. In taste tests, it was found that the recipes in which tofu was disguised were preferred. In addition, frozen tofu was generally found not to be perceived as markedly different from the fresh product....
