TL;DR: In this paper, the authors describe the implementation of one such strategy and the outcomes of such a strategy and describe the failure of most attempts at collective change in education, and failure means frustration, wasted time, feelings of incompetence and lack of support, and disillusionment.
Abstract: Educational change is a complex process which is only just beginning to be understood. As a result, there is yet to be developed a model of educational change that is sufficiently general to allow transfer to a range of environments but specific enough to be able to be translated into action. However, there is a large body of research based knowledge which, coupled with experience gained in the field, can be used to generate strategies for effecting change in higher education. This paper describes the implementation of one such strategy and the outcomes. Most attempts at collective change in education seem to fail, and failure means frustration, wasted time, feelings of incompetence and lack of support, and disillusionment. (Fullan, 1982, p. 63) Most of those involved in educational development know and understand the sentiments expressed by Fullan above. Yet, if we are “to assist in improving the quality of education provided by the institution˚d, which has been suggested by Lonsdale as the purp...

TL;DR: In this paper, an analysis of the characteristics of successful entrepreneurship programs in the 1990s is provided, and strong evidence is submitted of the inappropriateness of functionally organized academic departments to provide the course units for well-integrated programs in entrepreneurship and new-venture enterprise.
Abstract: In 1990, some 53 entrepreneurship courses were offered in 17 Australian universities A review of these courses indicates that, except for two institutions, all are offered as electives or as a single course in business or engineering degrees Using the Swinburne degree and diploma award programs in entrepreneurship as a case study, an analysis is provided of the characteristics of successful programs in the 1990s In particular, strong evidence is submitted of the inappropriateness of functionally organized academic departments to provide the course units for well-integrated programs in entrepreneurship and new-venture enterprise

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors argue for differential member identifications with the leader, i.e., the group is bound together by narcissistic identifications among the members who have each incorporated important aspects of the leader into their ego-ideal.
Abstract: This paper is concerned with the idea of the group as a signifying chain. Group elements, e.g., roles, subgroups, group episodes, and social acts, are viewed as signifiers open to particular significations each of which may be represented within the imaginary history of the group, i.e., in particular people and events. This theoretical position is arrived at via an application of Lacan's ideas to implications drawn from an examination of Freud's works on narcissism and group psychology. To Freud, the group is bound together by narcissistic identifications among the members who have each incorporated important aspects of the leader into his/her ego-ideal. The myth of the primal horde exemplifies this basic group structure. Taking this myth as a basis for further hypotheses about groups, this paper argues for differential member identifications with the leader. These differential identifications seem to be the imaginary effects of the signifying chain (group structure) that is anchored by the central signif...

TL;DR: In the paper, for a class of Petri net models representing primary components of FMSs, a method that allows to systematically construct functional abstractions is presented and is then used to obtain the functional abstraction of the PetriNet model of a machining station.
Abstract: The use of generic models in the synthesis of FMSs, which allows for rapid modelling and analysis, does not reduce complexity of the verification model. This complexity can be reduced by replacing the constituent components (generic models) with their functional abstractions, which represent the external behaviour of the components. In the paper, for a class of Petri net models representing primary components of FMSs, a method that allows to systematically construct functional abstractions is presented. This method is then used to obtain the functional abstraction of the Petri net model of a machining station. >

TL;DR: The experiences reported by students who sought help from formal counselling sources were compared with those reported by those who sought assistance from informal helpers as discussed by the authors, and the two groups of students had similar types of problems, but the counselling clients reported higher levels of problem seriousness, lower levels of comfort with the interaction, and higher satisfaction with the help offered.
Abstract: The experiences reported by students who sought help from formal counselling sources were compared with those reported by students who sought assistance from informal helpers. The two groups of students had similar types of problems, but the counselling clients reported (a) higher levels of problem seriousness, (b) lower levels of comfort with the interaction, and (c) higher levels of satisfaction with the help offered.

TL;DR: The way in which practical elements have been successfully incorporated at this level in Australia through a co-operative education programme is discussed.
Abstract: Much of the debate over OR education over the last ten years has been confined to the relevance of the content and style of programmes at the postgraduate level This paper focuses on the undergraduate level and discusses the way in which practical elements have been successfully incorporated at this level in Australia These elements include the use of case study material from the literature, case problem solving groups, industrial projects and 12 months paid employment through a co-operative education programme The use of each of the above and the context with which they fit into the programme is covered as are the benefits and problems associated with the programme

TL;DR: This paper examined official attitudes to Germans resident in Australia and Canada and external to them during the second world war and in the immediate post-war period and found that altered perceptions of ethnicity are likely to alter the ways governments behave towards ethnic minorities.
Abstract: People of German‐speaking background have been permanent residents in Australia and Canada for an extensive period of time and are perceived favourably in these multicultural contexts. This has not always been the case. The event of war has the potential to influence the formation of self‐images and stereotypes of ‘others’ and hence to affect the cohesion of ethnic communities. It follows that altered perceptions of ethnicity are likely to alter the ways governments behave towards ethnic minorities. This, in turn, brings a modification in ethnic relations policy. The focus of this article is to examine official attitudes to Germans resident in these countries and external to them during the second world war and in the immediate post‐war period. A particular concern is that of internment. To look comparatively should develop a deeper understanding of its use in two similar (but also different) commonwealth countries.

TL;DR: The reaction has been used to estimate glucose levels in Saccharomyces cerevisiae fermentation and α-amylase, invertase and β-galactosidase reactions and coloured corn-steep fermentation media.
Abstract: An enzymic method has been developed for analysis of glucose. Glucose oxidase acts on glucose to produce hydrogen peroxide which acts to directly reduce the green Cu(II) 2–2′-bicinchoninate complex to a violet complex without horseradish peroxidase. A concentration range of 20–200 μM glucose was used but the reaction shows a linear range of 20–800 μM glucose. Interference is controlled by using a blank determination which has not been treated with glucose oxidase. The reaction has been used to estimate glucose levels in Saccharomyces cerevisiae fermentation and α-amylase, invertase and β-galactosidase reactions and coloured corn-steep fermentation media.

TL;DR: Researchers in a number of countries where anti-discrimination legislation has been introduced, including the United States, Britain, and Australia, have similarly observed that the legislation has so far failed to achieve the results that equal opportunities reformers had hoped for as discussed by the authors.
Abstract: Researchers in a number of countries where anti sex-discrimination legislation has been introduced, including the United States, Britain, and Australia, have similarly observed that the legislation has so far failed to achieve the results that equal opportunities reformers had hoped for, Madden, for instance, observed about the US labour market that a sex differential in wages, favouring men, persists despite anti-discrimination legislation, and without any convincing evidence to show that women are less productive than men and so should be paid less [1]. Likewise in Britain, Collinson reported that' the persistence of occupational segregation by sex, as a primary characteristic of the UK labour market, has exposed the failure of anti-discrimination legislation to achieve its purpose' [2]. The same has also been claimed about the Australian labour market, leading Kramar to conclude, as had Collinson in Britain, that anti-discrimination legislation needs to be accompanied by stronger emphasis on positive action if greater progress towards equal employment opportunities for women is to be made in future [3].

TL;DR: The authors explore the potential of a specific cognitive architecture to provide the relational mechanism needed to capitalize on the respective strengths of symbolic and nonsymbolic modes of representation, and on the benefits of their interaction in achieving machine intelligence.
Abstract: The authors explore the potential of a specific cognitive architecture to provide the relational mechanism needed to capitalize on the respective strengths of symbolic and nonsymbolic modes of representation, and on the benefits of their interaction in achieving machine intelligence. This architecture is strongly influenced by the BAIRN system of I. Wallace et al. (1987) which provides a general theory of human cognition with a particular emphasis on the function of learning. This cognitive architecture is being used in a generic approach to the aspects of human performance designated by the term situation awareness. >

TL;DR: In this paper, personal construct theory and the repertory grid technique were used to investigate the self-concepts of 30 dyslexic and 30 non-dyslexic children aged between 9 and 16 years.
Abstract: Personal construct theory and the repertory grid technique were used to investigate the self-concepts of 30 dyslexic and 30 non-dyslexic children aged between 9 and 16 years. It was predicted that he self-concepts of the dyslexic students would be more negative than the self-concepts of the non-dyslexic students and that there would be a greater discrepancy between the self-constructions and the ideal self-constructions of he dyslexic group than of the non-dyslexic group. Results indicated hat the dyslexic students ranked themselves as significantly worse at reading and significantly less important than did the non-dyslexic students. The dyslexic children also exhibited significantly greater discrepancy between their ideal self and actualself. A cluster analysis of the grid data indicated that the dyslexic students perceived the constructs ‘Hardworking’, ‘Clever’ and ‘Good at Reading’ as similar, while no such connection was made by the non-dyslexic group.
