TL;DR: In this paper, a special case of Bloxom's version of Tucker's three-mode model is developed statistically, and a distinction is made between modes in terms of whether they are fixed or random.
Abstract: A special case of Bloxom's version of Tucker's three-mode model is developed statistically. A distinction is made between modes in terms of whether they are fixed or random. Parameter matrices are associated with the fixed modes, while no parameters are associated with the mode representing random observation vectors. The identification problem is discussed, and unknown parameters of the model are estimated by a weighted least squares method based upon a Gauss-Newton algorithm. A goodness-of-fit statistic is presented. An example based upon self-report and peer-report measures of personality shows that the model is applicable to real data. The model represents a generalization of Thurstonian factor analysis; weighted least squares estimators and maximum likelihood estimators of the factor model can be obtained using the proposed theory.

TL;DR: In this article, eleven human hair samples were taken from the Chinese residents of Hong Kong for the study of hair trace elemental level and environmental exposures, and absolute neutron activation analysis and Ge(Li) gamma-ray spectrometry were applied in the determination of the trace element level.
Abstract: Eleven human hair samples were taken from the Chinese residents of Hong Kong for the study of hair trace elemental level and environmental exposures. Absolute neutron activation analysis and Ge(Li) gamma-ray spectrometry were applied in the determination of the trace elemental level. All results are reported in parts per million except for sulfur and oxygen which are reported in percent. The trace element content of hair from a drug addict was found to be considerably different from other sampled people. Comparison of the normal concentrations of the trace elements of the Chinese residents of Hong Kong was made with those from people of various other national, socio-cultural and environmental backgrounds. It was found that together with a few other trace elements, Ni, Sr, Zr and Hg content of the Chinese Residents of Hong Kong show a higher level than those of the other sampled people.

TL;DR: Results from the present study suggest that the mechanism of AES in the treatment of addiction may have a neuroendocrinological basis, particularly attractive in view of the isolation of opiate-like peptides from the brain.
Abstract: Forty-two heroin addicts and 31 normal persons were examined for the effect of acupuncture and electrical stimulation (AES) on plasma ACTH, cortisol and cyclic-AMP levels. Both ACTH and cortisol levels were reduced significantly in the addicts after treatment whereas no such significant reduction was observed in the normals. Plasma cyclic-AMP level was not affected in either group. Taken together, results from the present study suggest that the mechanism of AES in the treatment of addiction may have a neuroendocrinological basis. This hypothesis is particularly attractive in view of the isolation of opiate-like peptides from the brain.

TL;DR: In this article, a socio-historical account of the genesis, development, struggle and then death of sociology in China, covering a period of more than half a century, is given.
Abstract: Although 1949 is not a magical year in Chinese history in the sense of marking a total break with the centuries-old traditions and culture, it is appropriate to say that 1949 is the year which symbolizes the end of Chinese sociology. In this paper we attempt to give a socio-historical account of the genesis, development, struggle and then death of sociology in China, covering a period of more than half a century. The first part of the paper will deal with the institutionalization of sociology as a transplanted Western flower in Chinese soil; the second part describes and analyses how Chinese sociology struggled for its legitimacy for survival under Chinese Communism and how the battle was lost.

TL;DR: The observed increases in ACTH and cortisol levels probably reflect the inability of AES to suppress withdrawal symptoms induced by naloxone completely, in view of the appearance of mild withdrawal signs during this method of treatment.
Abstract: Plasma ACTH, cortisol, and cyclic-AMP levels of eleven heroin addicts were determined before and after treatment with a fast detoxification procedure using acupuncture and electrical stimulation (AES) together with the administration of limited doses of naloxone. At the end of the treatment period, the average plasma ACTH, cortisol, and cyclic-AMP level rose 130,83 and 24 percent, respectively. In view of the appearance of mild withdrawal signs during this method of treatment, the observed increases in ACTH and cortisol levels probably reflect the inability of AES to suppress withdrawal symptoms induced by naloxone completely. The mechanism underlying this new method of treatment is discussed in relation to AES's ability to stimulate the secretion of endorphisms.

TL;DR: In this paper, higher content of lead in the soil was found near motorways and the content drops according to the distance from the motorways, which may be due to species specific in the uptake of lead from soil.
Abstract: 1. Higher content of lead in the soil was found near motorways and the content drops according to the distance from the motorways. 2. Higher contents of lead in the tissue of two vegetables were also obtained. In general, leaf and root contained more lead than stem. 3. The contents of lead in different organs were positive correlated tq the lead content in soils. 4. Brassica parachinensis contained more lead than B. alboglabra which may be due to species specific in the uptake of lead from soil. 5. Washing with distilled water and detergent reduced over 50% of lead of the crops and washing with distilled water alone also reduced the content of lead to a lesser extent (18%). 6. The growing of root crops near motorways should be avoided because of the higher uptake of lead in roots. 7. Due to the development of new towns end the expansion of satellite cities under the present decentralization scheme, more roads will be used by motorcars in the near future and the fact of higher lead contents both i...

TL;DR: Results of the present investigation suggest that plasma c-AMP may be the best parameter by which to gauge the response of heroin addicts to AES.
Abstract: Eight female heroin-addicted subjects were treated over a 10-day period by acupuncture and electrical stimulation (AES). Their plasma ACTH, cortisol and c-AMP levels were reduced after initial AES treatment. The reduction of c-AMP was significant the most of the three. The suppression of these compounds may be associated with the temporary relief of withdrawl symptoms on and after each AES treatment in the first three days. On the third day, ACTH, cortisol and c-AMP levels did not show significant changes after AES. This was presumably due to the disappearance of withdrawal symptoms and possibly to the stabilizing effect of the treatment. Both the ACTH and c-AMP levels were generally lower at the end of the treatment period. Results of the present investigation suggest that plasma c-AMP may be the best parameter by which to gauge the response of heroin addicts to AES.

TL;DR: A mathematical analysis of the impedance function of this form shows that the voltage or current transient, in response to a step current or a step voltage respectively, can be expressed by a definite integral and that it is a well-behaved function of time.
Abstract: The transient response of a biological cell impedance has been found to be distinctly different from a simple exponential. This could follow from the fact that the impedance of a cell membrane could not be simply described by a lossy dielectric, but instead a constant-phase frequency-dependent component of the form (jωC)α to explain its frequency characteristics. A mathematical analysis of the impedance function of this form shows that the voltage or current transient, in response to a step current or a step voltage respectively, can be expressed by a definite integral and that it is a well-behaved function of time. For a given α the response can be evaluated numerically at discrete time intervals for comparison with experimental results. A simple scheme is introduced to derive from the measured response those parameters characterising the impedance. The scheme utilises the convergence property of the voltage transient curves and by a normalisation process (both in magnitude and in time scale) the measured transient curve can be compared with a set of computed curves iteratively to obtain the closest fit.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors studied the distribution of the soil fungi and the edaphic properties of the iron-ore tailings along the eastern coast of Tolo Harbour, Hong Kong.
Abstract: The distribution of the soil fungi and the edaphic properties of the iron‐ore tailings along the eastern coast of Tolo Harbour, Hong Kong were studied. There was a phenomena of fungal succession according to the different ages of the tailing‐deposits. There was a gradual decline in the number of fungal species and the abundance of mycelia related to depth and the distance towards the seashore. The occurrence of the fungi was found to be governed by some of the edaphic properties tested, such as texture, content of organic carbon, pH, etc. The content of the metals seemed to play a minor role. In view of the lack of the basic nutrients in the tailings, it is suggested that sewage sludge be applied for stimulating the decomposition of organic matter and the subsequent release of nutrients will be available to higher plants.

TL;DR: Seven mutant strains of Monascus purpureus, induced by fast-neutron and X-ray irradiations, differed in morphology, photoresponses and antibacterial activities, and the yellow pigment of the strains is proposed to be the photoreceptor.
Abstract: Seven mutant strains of Monascus purpureus, induced by fast-neutron and X-ray irradiations, differed in morphology, photoresponses and antibacterial activities. Instead of producing mainly ascospores on malt extract agar, most of the new strains produced a tremendous amount of conidia. Slightly pigmented strains had sturdier hyphae with less branching than those highly pigmented strains. Filaments of isodiametric cells occurred in one strain. Pigmentation of albino and slightly pigmented strains was greatly stimulated by UV irradiation. Conidiation of the albino strain was also stimulated. Unknown compound(s) from Bacillus sp. could substitute for the stimulatory effect of UV light. The yellow pigment of the strains is proposed to be the photoreceptor.

TL;DR: In this paper, the Chinese white cabbage, Brassica parachinensis, was grown in garden soil alone, and with two kinds of sludge, namely activated and digested sludge with l:500 and 2:500 (dry weight) application rates, respectively.
Abstract: Seedlings of the Chinese White Cabbage, Brassica parachinensis were grown in garden soil alone, and with two kinds of sludge, namely activated and digested sludge with l:500 and 2:500 (dry weight) application rates, respectively. The results showed a positive effect with the addition of both types of sludge at the 1:500 and a negative effect at the 2:500. This was indicated by the total dry weight after the seedlings had been cultured for a period of 30 days. Foliar analyses of the plants revealed a significantly higher uptake of Cd (P<0.01) in the activated sludge amended‐soil and both Cd and Mn (P<0.01) in the digested sludge amended‐soil at 1:500 application rates when compared with those grown in the garden soil alone. More heavy metals were transferred to the leaf tissues at the 2:500 application rate. However, the crops in all the pots showed no visual metal toxicity symptoms, possibly due to the short growing period and the comparatively lower content of heavy metal in the sludge. Land app...
