TL;DR: A causal model was developed to explicate the relationships among the variables hypothesized to affect adolescent depression and results showed a good fit of the model to the data.
Abstract: We examined how family strengths, parent-adolescent communication, self-esteem, loneliness, age, and gender interrelate, and how this interaction influences depression in adolescents. The data were collected on a written questionnaire completed by 156 adolescents who were attending public schools in four communities in the midwestern United States. We developed a causal model to explicate the relationships among the variables hypothesized to affect adolescent depression and analyzed the data using path analysis via the LISREL VII program. Results showed a good fit of the model to the data. Loneliness and self-esteem had a direct effect on adolescent depression. Self-esteem had an indirect effect on depression through loneliness. Age directly and indirectly influenced depression through loneliness. Gender was significantly related to depression through self-esteem. Family strengths indirectly affected depression through self-esteem.

TL;DR: A Gondwanan origin for the pre-Cretaceous basement of Florida is suggested by U-Pb ages of 515 to 2860 Ma for single zircons separated from subsurface samples of lower Paleozoic sandstone of the Suwannee basin and Neoproterozoic Osceola granite (Osceola County, Florida) as discussed by the authors.
Abstract: A Gondwanan origin for the pre-Cretaceous basement of Florida is suggested by U- Pb ages of 515 to 2860 Ma for single zircons separated from subsurface samples of lower Paleozoic sandstone of the Suwannee basin (Alachua County, Florida) and Neoproterozoic Osceola granite (Osceola County, Florida). Forty individual grains analyzed by SHRIMP ion microprobe yielded ages from 515 to 2860 Ma; ages >1000 Ma were predominantly concordant. Two principal populations are evident: (1) 515 to 637 Ma (avg. = 574 Ma; 206 Pb/ 238 U ages) and (2) 1967 to 2282 Ma (avg. = 2130 Ma; 207 Pb/ 206 Pb ages). Only six zircons were recovered from the granite; four are Pan-African and two are Archean. For the sandstone, the similarity between the Sm-Nd model age (1245 Ma) and the average of the single zircon ages (1326 Ma) suggests that these zircons are chronologically representative of the aggregate provenance of the sandstone. The two dominant zircon age groupings correspond chronologically to the Pan-African and Birimian or Eburnian (Africa) and to the Brasiliano and Trans-Amazonian (South America) orogenic cycles. The presence of detritus from rocks of these two orogenic cycles clearly places the basement of Florida in Gondwanaland proximal to the West African and/or Trans-Amazonian-San Luis cratons in the early Paleozoic, a location it probably shared with other circum-Atlantic exotic terranes (Avalonian, Cadomian, and/or Carolina).

TL;DR: The conclusion that P2 amplitude/intensity slope may be a predictor of response to treatment with antidepressant medication with patients diagnosed with major depressive disorder is supported.
Abstract: We measured event-related potential (ERP) component amplitudes to four intensities of randomly presented tones. Patients diagnosed with major depressive disorder were tested prior to and following a clinical trial of antidepressant medication. Slope of P2 amplitude as a function of stimulus intensity was calculated for each subject and condition. Subjects were divided into two groups (responders and nonresponders) based on their Hamilton Rating Scale for depression scores following treatment. Responders had significantly larger P2 slopes prior to treatment than did nonresponders. P2 slopes did not differ significantly between responders and nonresponders following antidepressant treatment. These data support the conclusion that P2 amplitude/intensity slope may be a predictor of response to treatment with antidepressant medication.

TL;DR: Findings suggest that the inhibitory influences of FLX on male rat copulatory behavior are mediated in part by the interaction ofFLX with neurons originating in the PGi.
Abstract: In Experiment 1, the 5-HT uptake blocker fluoxetine (FLX; 20 mg/kg) reduced the proportion of sexually experienced male rats displaying ejaculations. Among those animals that did ejaculate there was an increase in intromission frequency (IF), ejaculation latency (EL), and postejaculatory interval (PEI) and a reduction in copulatory efficiency (CE) during the final copulatory sequence prior to sexual exhaustion. In Experiment 2, we found similar inhibitory effects of FLX as well as facilitating effects of lesions of the nucleus paragigantocellularis (PGi) on male rat copulatory behavior. Males with PGi lesions displayed more ejaculations and a longer latency to sexual exhaustion compared to intact animals. When FLX was given to rats with PGi lesions, it did not influence the proportion of rats ejaculating nor did it alter IF, EL, or PEI during the final copulatory series prior to exhaustion. These findings suggest that the inhibitory influences of FLX on male rat copulatory behavior are mediated in part by the interaction of FLX with neurons originating in the PGi.

TL;DR: Hypoplasia of the corpus callosum is a marker of cerebral dysgenesis that should be looked for in the appropriate clinical setting, and the prevalence of mental retardation in this condition is suggested.
Abstract: The size of the corpus callosum was assessed visually and by computer-assisted image analysis in a series of 445 consecutive magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans in children under 17 years of age Fifty individuals were subjectively identified with small corpora callosa on visual inspection of the MRI scans Seven patients had true hypoplasia of the corpus callosum after comparing the computer-measured relative size of the structure to previously established normal values Five additional patients had complete agenesis, and two had partial agenesis of the corpus callosum The cognitive functional levels of the seven patients with callosal hypoplasia and a control group of 63 randomly selected individuals from the remainder of the group were ascertained by record review Seventy-one percent of the patients with hypoplasia of the corpus callosum and 29% of the control group had impaired function The P value determined by Fisher's exact test was P = 061, suggesting that further study with greater numbers may be warranted The prevalence of mental retardation in this condition, and the fact that hypoplasia is as common as complete and partial agenesis of the corpus callosum combined, suggest that hypoplasia of the corpus callosum is a marker of cerebral dysgenesis that should be looked for in the appropriate clinical setting

Abstract: Reversibly gel-forming compositions for sustained delivery of bio-affecting substances are disclosed. The compositions exhibit significant changes in viscosity in response to changes in pH. The compositions contain relatively low concentrations of a stable combination of at least one pH-responsive gelling polymer and at least one other thermally nonresponsive polymer. The compositions are preferably formulated to include one or more therapeutic or diagnostic agents for administration as a liquid that will gel in situ or for topical application as a pre-formed gel.

TL;DR: The responses to vascular occlusions and intracoronary administration of prostacyclin (PGI2) were carried out before and after heart failure was induced by chronic cardiac pacing, and the heart rate response to ascending aortic occlusion was almost completely abolished.
Abstract: Cardiac and arterial baroreflex control of the circulation is abnormal in both human and experimental heart failure. Ventricular vagal afferents mediate mechanical and chemical reflexes, which result in bradycardia and hypotension. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the changes that occur in ventricular mechanoreflexes and chemoreflexes in a conscious canine model of chronic heart failure. Dogs were instrumented for the measurement of left ventricular pressure, left atrial pressure, arterial pressure, and heart rate. Vascular occluders were placed on the ascending thoracic aorta, on the descending thoracic aorta, and on the thoracic inferior vena cava. A chronic left circumflex coronary artery catheter was also implanted. Finally, a pacing lead was secured to the left ventricular free wall. After recovery from surgery (10 to 14 days), the dogs were subjected to complete arterial baroreceptor denervation. The responses to vascular occlusions and intracoronary administration of prostacyclin (PGI2) were carried out before and after heart failure was induced by chronic cardiac pacing at 250 beats per minute. PGI2 was used as a chemical stimulus for ventricular afferents; ascending aortic occlusion was used as a mechanical stimulus. Before chronic pacing, ascending aortic occlusion resulted in a decrease in heart rate of 36.1 +/- 12.3 beats per minute (mean +/- SD, P < .001). After heart failure was induced, the heart rate response to ascending aortic occlusion was almost completely abolished. The slope of the linear relation between pulse interval and left ventricular end-diastolic pressure was reduced by 90.5% from a control value of 11.3 +/- 6.9 ms/mm Hg after heart failure had been induced.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

TL;DR: The results demonstrate the existence of a higher order structure in rRNA that directly affects the folding of the 30S subunit and contributes to a complex structure of r RNA that controls the conformational state of the ribosome.
Abstract: Phylogenetic comparison of rRNA sequences has suggested that a pseudoknot structure exists in the central domain of small-subunit rRNA. In Escherichia coli 16S rRNA, this pseudoknot would form when positions 570 and 571 pair with positions 865 and 866. Mutations were introduced into this pseudoknot at the phylogenetically invariant nucleotides U571 and A865. Single mutations of U to A at 571 or A to U at 865 dramatically altered the structural stability of the 30S subunit and also impaired the function of the subunit in translation. When the mutations were combined to create a compensatory pairing, the normal structure of the 30S subunit was restored, and the function of the mutant subunit in translation returned to wild-type levels. These results demonstrate the existence of a higher order structure in rRNA that directly affects the folding of the 30S subunit. Given the position of this structure in the three-dimensional model of the small subunit and the additional interactions that are likely to form in the same rRNA region, the central domain pseudoknot appears to contribute to a complex structure of rRNA that controls the conformational state of the ribosome.

TL;DR: In this paper, situationally and developmentally appropriate items from Ainsworth's Maternal care rating scales (Ainsworth, 1976) were used to code mothers' and fathers' interactions with their infants during videotaped, structured situations in the home at 1, 6, and 12 months.
Abstract: Measurement of parent-infant interactive behaviors continues to be a methodological challenge. As part of a larger study ( N - 351), situationally and developmentally appropriate items from Ainsworth's Maternal-Care Rating Scales (Ainsworth, 1976) were used to code mothers' and fathers' interactions with their infants during videotaped, structured situations in the home at 1, 6, and 12 months. To reduce the number of variables, principal axis factor analysis with Varimax rotation revealed two factors for both parents at each time period: at 1 month, kinesthetic interaction and sensory stimulation from seven items; at 6 months, quality of interactive behaviors and quantity of facilitative interaction from 13 items; and at 12 months, responsiveness to infant and developmental facilitation from 9 items. These factors offer descriptive measures and indicators of maternal and paternal behaviors during interaction with their infants.

TL;DR: Although clinical trials are being used to evaluate economic outcomes of new agents, there are methodological problems and decisions based on these analyses may lead to inefficient use of medical resources.
Abstract: Although clinical trials are being used to evaluate economic outcomes of new agents, there are methodological problems. Decisions based on these analyses may lead to inefficient use of medical resources. Randomized clinical trials provide important information on the efficacy of new pharmaceutical agents for cancer patients. Policy makers are likely to require both economic and clinical data in order to approve pharmaceuticals for widespread use. Clinical trials provide an opportunity to evaluate economic outcomes for new agents. However, the interpretation of economic analyses of clinical trials raises issues related to perspective of the investigators, study design, collection of data on resource utilization, and generalizability of data to other settings. In this paper, we review these issues and illustrate problems associated with analyses of economic data from a recent phase III trial of hematopoietic growth factors. Clinical results were similar in both Paris and New York in this phase III trial. However, economic results differed markedly between the hospital in Paris and the hospital in New York. While significant savings in terms of fewer days in the hospital and fewer laboratory tests and radiographs for the granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF) patients were noted at the New York hospital, resource savings were not identified at the hospital in France. Caution must be used when reimbursement policies are based on economic analyses of clinical trials. Policy decisions must be based on studies that are carefully conducted, analyzed, and interpreted from both a clinical and an economic perspective.

TL;DR: The purpose of this study was to determine the accuracy of the American College of Sports Medicine's ACSM equation for estimating the oxygen cost of exercise performed by women on a cycle ergometer and it would appear that it provides a more accurate depiction of the cycle ergometry VO2-power relationship for women.
Abstract: The purpose of this study was to determine the accuracy of the American College of Sports Medicine's (ACSM) equation for estimating the oxygen cost of exercise performed by women on a cycle ergometer. Sixty healthy, young females performed a five-stage submaximal cycle ergometry test. Results indicated the SEE for the predicted oxygen values ranged from 79-156 ml.min-1, with total errors (E) ranging from 107-275 ml.min-1. Correlations between the actual and predicted values ranged from r = -0.22 to r = 0.38. The r, SEE, and E were 0.96, 118, and 172, respectively for all of the power loads combined. A revised equation was developed based upon the actual VO2-power relationship. This equation appears as: VO2 (ml.min-1) = kgm.min-1 x 1.6 ml.min-1 + ((3.5 ml.kg-1.min-1 x kg body weight) + 205 ml.min-1). Cross validation was performed on an independent sample of 40 subjects. All of the SEE and E were lower and all of the correlations were higher at each power load in the validation sample. Since the revised equation is based on an actual VO2-power relationship, it would appear that it provides a more accurate depiction of the cycle ergometry VO2-power relationship for women. These facts support its use.

TL;DR: In this article, a parallel implementation of the primal simplex method for minimum cost network flow problems is presented, which decomposes both the pivoting and pricing operations in a self-scheduling approach.
Abstract: This paper reports on a new parallel implementation of the primal simplex method for minimum cost network flow problems that decomposes both the pivoting and pricing operations. The self-scheduling approach is flexible and efficient; its implementation is close in speed to the best serial code when using one processor, and is capable of substantial speedups as parallel computing units are added. An in-depth computational study of randomly generated transportation and transshipment problems verified the effectiveness of this approach, with results on a 20-processor 80386-based system that are competitive with, and occasionally superior to, massively parallel implementations using tens of thousands of processors. A microanalysis of the code's behavior identified unexpected sources of the occasionally superlinear speedup, including the evolutionary topology of the network basis.

TL;DR: When the demographic variables are included in the growth equations, the effect of government size on the growth rate of per capita output became insignificant rather than, as prior studies showed, significantly negative.
Abstract: This paper examines the effect of government size on the growth rate of per capita output by incorporating demographic variables. Evidence from more than 86 countries suggests that the demographic variables not only affect economic growth, but also determine the size of government. Both the young and the old age dependency ratios were positively related to the size of government, while population density and population size were negatively related to the size of government. Moreover, when the demographic variables are included in the growth equations, the effect of government size on the growth rate of per capita output became insignificant rather than, as prior studies showed, significantly negative.
