Prognostic Indicators of Alcoholism Treatment Outcome

Abstract: This literature review is a systematic attempt to isolate the personal characteristics of alcoholics generally associated with their prognosis. Forty-five studies which met certain standards for inclusion are summarized here. The description of each study and its corresponding list of characteristics of alcoholics investigated for prognostic value are reported in tables. The tables do not reveal stable predictors across the studies, though some personal characteristics are more generally of predictive value than are others. A number of reasons for the absence of predictor stability are discussed--among them the possibility that certain treatments may work best with certain alcoholic patients.

A chromatographic study of the relative affinities of rat bone and skin collagen alpha1 chains for hydroxyapatite.

Abstract: The affinity of a bone collagen alpha1 chain for hydroxyapatite has been compared to a similarly isolated skin component from the same animals. The chain from bone exhibits a higher affinity for the mineral. This enhanced affinity appears to be related to its primary structure, specifically its hydroxylysine moieties.

Tissue deamination of l-amino acids in the teleost Stizostedion vitreum (Mitchill)☆

Abstract: 1. 1. Deamination of l -amino acids was determined in liver, kidney and gill tissue of the walleye ( Stizostedion vitreum ). 2. 2. l -asparagine and l -glutamine were found to be deaminated at the highest specific rates for the tissues examined. 3. 3. Results obtained suggest the liver and kidney in this species are important sites of ammonia production and gill tissue plays a minor role.

Critical Studies in the History of Social Psychology

Abstract: Recent investigations of the history of social psy chology demonstrate that the internal development of theory, methods and research cannot be separated from the social con text in which they occur. Instead, these developments reflect a dialectical exchange between science and society. The present paper reviews recent studies of social psychology's historical development; points out the inadequacies of traditional views of our history as a progression from metaphysical speculation to scientific experimentation; and discusses the implications of critical history for our "current crisis."

Prediction of Social Adjustment Over a Period of 6 or 9 Years

Abstract: The objectives of this research were to identify long-range predictors of social adjustment and to determine the multiple correlation between these predictors and the social adjustment of children after 6 or 9 years had elapsed. The subjects were 536 children who were first evaluated in third or sixth grade and for whom social adjustment was assessed either 6 or 9 years later. A multiple correlation of .66 for a best set of predictors was found. Significant predictors included classroom behavior traits, arithmetic achievement level, response to a sentence completion test, rating of the parents' marital relationship, and maternal discipline. These findings are discussed in terms of early identification and treatment of children likely to experience subsequent social maladjustment.
