Abstract: The Period2 gene, an indispensable component of the circadian clock, not only modulates circadian oscillations, but also regulates organic function. We examined whether overexpression of the mouse Period2 gene (mPer2) in tumor cells influences cell growth and induces apoptosis. Overexpression of PERIOD2 in the mouse Lewis lung carcinoma cell line (LLC) and mammary carcinoma cell line (EMT6) results in reduced cellular proliferation and rapid apoptosis, but not in NIH 3T3 cells. Overexpressed mPER2 also altered the expression of apoptosis-related genes. The mRNA and protein levels of c-Myc, Bcl-X(L) and Bcl-2 were downregulated, whereas the expression of p53 and bax was upregulated in mPER2-overexpressing LLC cells compared with control cells transferred with empty plasmid. Our results suggest that the circadian gene mPeriod2 may play an important role in tumor suppression by inducing apoptotic cell death, which is attributable to enhanced pro-apoptotis signaling and attenuated anti-apoptosis processes.

Abstract: Objective Previous research has suggested that social support and functional status influence the subjective well-being of the elderly. However, few studies have investigated whether these associations influence well-being in the very old. Methods In this population-based, cross-sectional study, 1401 persons aged 90 years or over were located in Du Jiang Yan city, Sichuan, China. Among them 732 were willing to participate and provided data on a battery of standardized questionnaire inventories. The 23-item Philadelphia Geriatric Center Morale Scale (PGCMS) was examined as an index of subjective well-being. Functional status was assessed using the physical self-maintenance scale (PSMS) and the instrumental activities of daily living (IADL) scales. The mini-mental state examination (MMSE) was used to measure cognitive function. Social support was assessed using the Family Adaptation, Partnership, Growth, Affection, and Resolve (APGAR) scale and the social support requirement scale (SSRS). Results The mean age was 93.7 ± 3.4 years for the participants, of whom 68% were female. PGCMS total scores were significantly correlated with the Family APGAR and Objective Support subscale of the SSRS, as well as with scores on the MMSE and PSMS scales. However, in a multiple regression analysis, only MMSE and Family APGAR scores were independent predictors of PGCMS scores. Conclusion Both social support from family members and cognitive function appear to be key factors associated with quality of life among the very old in China. Further research is needed among very old populations to confirm the importance of these variables and to examine potential cross-cultural differences. Copyright © 2009 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Abstract: Background The aim of this study is to report a novel, multicenter experience with the diverticular peroral endoscopic myotomy (D-POEM) technique in the management of esophageal diverticula. Methods This is a multicenter, international, retrospective study involving three centers. D-POEM was performed using the principles of submucosal endoscopy. Results A total of 11 patients with an esophageal diverticulum (Zenker’s 7, mid-esophagus 1, epiphrenic 3) were included. The mean size of the esophageal diverticula was 34.5 mm. The overall technical success rate of D-POEM was 90.9 %, with a mean procedure time of 63.2 minutes. There were no adverse events. Clinical success was achieved in 100 % (10 /10), with a decrease in mean dysphagia score from 2.7 to 0.1 (P Conclusion Endoscopic management of esophageal diverticula using the novel technique of D-POEM appears promising. This first case series on D-POEM suggests that the procedure is feasible, safe, and effective in the management of esophageal diverticula. D-POEM offers the distinct advantage of ensuring a complete septotomy. Larger studies are needed to confirm these intriguing results.

Abstract: A series of Pt(II)-Schiff base complexes were synthesized as triplet sensitizers for the purpose of tuning the singlet and triplet energy levels so as to minimize energy loss during triplet-triplet annihilation (TTA) upconversion (UC). A deep-red to blue TTA-UC was achieved with an unprecedentedly large anti-Stokes shift of 1.08 eV. UC quantum yields of up to 21% (with a theoretical maximum efficiency of 50%) were observed in solution. The complexes also showed efficient UC emission in air-saturated hydrogels with a UC quantum yield up to 14.8%, which is much higher than the highest previously reported value. The low threshold excitation intensity provided by the present system offers promising potential for application in terrestrial solar energy conversion.
