TL;DR: It is found that changes in activities may be more important to happiness among the most elderly persons interviewed than others, and direct relationships between happiness and social activity among elderly people were found.
Abstract: This paper reports on a 4-year longitudinal study of 60 elderly women. Data about their happiness and social activities were collected using the Affect Balance Scale and nine measures of socially relevant activities, including three measures of media use, three of interpersonal interaction, and three of activities in voluntary associations. Direct relationships between happiness and social activity among elderly people were found in analysis of these data. This finding was not spurious according to longitudinal data: activity increments were associated with happiness and decrements with unhappiness. Although these findings describe the over-all picture, changes in activities may be more important to happiness among the most elderly persons interviewed than others.

Abstract: The two-phase flowmeter correlations of James, Marriott, and Murdock are evaluated using data for orifices and for venturi and nozzles previously reported. Further, a new correlation is proposed for the case where the phases may be treated as separated and this correlation is evaluated using the same data. (auth)

TL;DR: The purpose of this note is to show that the DCT and the KLT are indeed asymptotically equivalent if the data covariance matrix is a Toeplitz matrix.
Abstract: In the above correspondence,1 Ahmed et al. proposed a discrete cosine transform (DCT) and compared its performance with the Karhunen-Loeve transform (KLT). They offered empirical evidence showing that the DCT and the KLT compare closely for a number of digital signal processing applications. The purpose of this note is to show that the DCT and the KLT are indeed asymptotically equivalent if the data covariance matrix is a Toeplitz matrix.

TL;DR: Ahlswede (1974) found a new approach to the coding problem for a channel with two senders and one receiver which led to an alternative characterization of the capacity region of this channel, and this approach seems to be more canonical than the earlier one.
Abstract: The study of multi-way channels was initiated by Shannon in his basic paper “Two-way communication channels” ( Shannon, 1961 ). Ahlswede (1971b) has defined and classified multi-way channels of various kinds and proved simple characterizations for the capacity regions of channels with (a) two senders and one receiver, and (b) three senders and one receiver. Subsequently, Ahlswede (1974) found a new approach to the coding problem for a channel with two senders and one receiver which led to an alternative characterization of the capacity region of this channel. This approach seems to be more canonical than the earlier one, and was used successfully in determining the capacity region of a channel with two senders and two receivers in case both senders send messages simultaneously to both receivers ( Ahlswede, 1974 ). In the earlier paper, Ahlswede conjectured that the results of that paper would hold for any channel with s ⩾ 2 senders and one receiver. A conjecture of the later paper was that its results would hold for any channel with s ⩾ 2 senders and r ⩾ 1 receivers in case all senders send independent messages simultaneously to all receivers. In this paper, we have proved the latter conjecture to be true. The characterization we get for the special case s = 3 and r = 1 is different from that of Ahlswede's (1971b) earlier paper. All of our results are obtained under the assumption of independent sources.

TL;DR: In the early 20th century, there was a new women's publication for women in China as discussed by the authors, which was a unique aspect of the new style journalism, for any Chinese periodical intended for women was, by its very existence, revolutionary.
Abstract: The nationalistic intellectual ferment among young Chinese students in the early twentieth century and its reflection in the modernization of popular journalism are by now well documented. The popular press expanded rapidly; Britton (1966: 127) reports that as of 1890 there were 15 periodicals in existence; in 1898, 60 periodicals; and in 1913, a total of 487 were in print. A Chinese language press flourished in Japan as well; a 1907 survey (Lian-shi, n.d.: 2) found 20 periodicals there that year. No matter what their political coloration, all the new periodicals contributed to the intellectual climate by introducing new ideas, publishing translations of Japanese and Western writings, and presenting news of China and the world. But the new women's press which appeared at this time was a unique aspect of the new-style journalism, for any Chinese periodical intended for women was, by its very existence, revolutionary. Heretofore, publications for women had been limited to books directed at girls and women in the isolation of their family compounds, no more than restatements of traditional precepts which governed their restricted life style within that isolation. A traditional "women's classic" such as the Lie nu zhuan (Biographies of Chaste Women) did not serve to bring news of contemporary events outside the confines of the home.

TL;DR: In this paper, six general motivational factors were found: Long Term Growth and Satisfaction vs. Short Term Attainments with Frustrations, Social vs. Selfish Values, Masculinity vs. Femininity, People Orientation, Egocentric vs. Materialistic Orientation and Relaxed Materialism vs. Frustrated Insecurity.
Abstract: Dynamic motivational traits identified by Cattell were factor analytically examined to determine more general underlying factors. Cattell's Motivational Analysis Test, which measures 10 dynamic structures was administered to 247 subjects. The intercorrelations of the dynamics were factor analyzed. Six general motivational factors were found: Long Term Growth and Satisfaction vs. Short Term Attainments with Frustrations, Social vs. Selfish Values, Masculinity vs. Femininity, People Orientation, Egocentric vs. Materialistic Orientation, Relaxed Materialism vs. Frustrated Insecurity. The factors represented an individual's general motivational orientation.

TL;DR: In this article, a series of comparative tests of vortex generators applied to the (GA-W)-1 airfoil show that triangular planform vortex generators are superior to square plan-form vortex generator of the same span.
Abstract: Two-dimensional wind-tunnel tests were conducted to determine effectiveness of spoilers applied to the GA(W)-1 airfoil. Tests of several spoiler configurations show adequate control effectiveness with flap nested. It is found that providing a vent path allowing lower surface air to escape to the upper surface as the spoiler opens alleviates control reversal and hysteresis tendencies. Spoiler cross-sectional shape variations generally have a modest influence on control characteristics. A series of comparative tests of vortex generators applied to the (GA-W)-1 airfoil show that triangular planform vortex generators are superior to square planform vortex generators of the same span.

TL;DR: In this article, a frequency domain technique for identifying a class of nonlinear systems is presented, which consists of a power series nonlinearity sandwiched between two linear systems and the problem is one of identifying the transfer functions of the linear system and the coefficients of the power series nonsmoothness from the terminal behavior of the system.
Abstract: A frequency domain technique for identifying a class of nonlinear systems is presented. The class of nonlinear systems we consider in this paper consists of a power series nonlinearity sandwiched between two linear systems and the problem we address is one of identifying the transfer functions of the linear systems and the coefficients of the power series nonlinearity from the terminal behavior of the system. The identification procedure is based on a frequency domain model of the nonlinear system. The system is modeled by a set of nonlinear transfer functions in the frequency domain and the relationships between the transfer functions of the linear system, the power series coefficients of the nonlinearity, and the nonlinear transfer functions of the system are developed. The identification procedure is based on a simple algorithm for factoring the non-linear transfer functions of the system. The experimental data required for applying our identification procedure consists of the amplitude response of the system to multitone sinusoidal input. A minimum phase transfer function in a single variable is used to approximate the experimental data and the repeated application of the factoring algorithm leads to the identification of the system. Examples illustrating the use of the proposed procedure are also presented.

TL;DR: In this paper, a typology emerged from analysis which confirmed and extended the concepts of primary and secondary association and classified mass media in a third form of social association, and multiple relationships among behaviors within and between such modes of activity provided heuristic findings in support of behavior exchange hypotheses.
Abstract: Analysis of longitudinal data has detected exchanges between social behaviors, including attention to the media of mass communication, that are obscured by the magnitude of individual differences in cross-sectional data. In the past neither general "modes" of social activities nor multiple relationships among particular communication behaviors have been empirically demonstrated Cluster analysis has provided a technique for developing an inductive typology of modes of social activity, and a typology emerged from analysis which confirmed and extended the concepts of primary and secondary association and classified mass media in a third form of social association. Further analysis of multiple relationships among behaviors within and between such modes of activity provided heuristic findings in support of behavior exchange hypotheses. These findings synthesize existing perspectives on personal changes in communication behavior into a new paradigm for research.

TL;DR: The instruments measuring authoritarianism loaded the first factor in the right direction, but most of them had their primary loadings elsewhere, suggesting greater conceptual complexity to this area than previously recognized.
Abstract: Summary Since the instruments for measuring most of the current leadership models have never been reconciled, it is important that the relationships between them be clearly understood before assumptions of similarity are made. A sample of 103 male working students were given a battery of tests measuring leadership orientations. The tests included role preference and role pressure measures from Sweney's Response to Power Model, the California F Scale, Fiedler's Least Preferred Co-Worker Scale and Assumed Similarity Between Opposites Scale, Costley and Downey's six scales to measure McGregor's “Theory X” and “Theory Y” constructs, modified scales for the Blake and Mouton Managerial Grid, and relevant scales from the 16 PF. The results were intercorrelated and yielded 11 varimax factors based upon a Guttman criterion, as follows: Authoritarian Role Preference, Authoritarian Role Pressure, Equalitarian Role Preference, Equalitarian Role Pressure, Balanced Manager, People Oriented Manager, Assumed Similarity B...

TL;DR: In this article, the results of a low-temperature, specific heat investigation of a sequence of Ti-V (3-90 at.%) alloys are reported, and the electronic specific heat coefficient, γ, and superconducting transition temperature, T c, respond strongly to the composition-and heat-treatment-dependent microstructural states of the alloys.
Abstract: The results of a low-temperature, specific-heat investigation of a sequence of Ti-V (3–90 at.%) alloys are reported. The electronic specific heat coefficient, γ, and superconducting transition temperature, T c , respond strongly to the composition- and heat-treatment-dependent microstructural states of the alloys. In particular, the presence of ω-phase precipitation is responsible for pronounced depressions of γ and T c in the composition range of about 13 through 25 at.% V. As density-of-states-related quantities, γ, T c , and χ (the magnetic susceptibility, discussed in an earlier paper) all follow similar trends when measured in the as-quenched alloys, ω-Phase, when it occurs in such alloys, reduces the measured γ and χ values by weighted averaging, and reduces T c through the operation of a complete proximity effect. On the other hand, during the aging of a pair of selected members of the series under investigation ( viz ., Ti-V (15 at.%) and Ti-V (19 at.%)), although γ and χ continue to decrease as ω-phase develops, T c increases and the superconducting transition broadens. The aging situation is analyzed in terms of an incomplete proximity effect which evolves as the co-phase pre-cipitates increase in size with aging time.

Abstract: A simple test for the separability of multivariable (MV) polynomials which occur in the study of MV networks and multi-dimensional digital filters, etc., is presented. The separability condition is given in terms of the coefficients of the MV polynomials and expressing the given polynomial, if separable, as a product of single-variable polynomials is a direct consequence of the test for separability.

TL;DR: In this article, it has been proved that Tc is much higher than would be expected on a purely density-of-states basis, due to variation in lattice (solution) strengthening.
Abstract: Quenched, martensitic, titanium-base, transition-metal-binary (Ti-T2) alloys exhibit unusually rapid increases in superconducting transition temperature, Tc, with solute concentration. Indeed, in Ti-Mo it has been proved that Tc is much higher than would be expected on a purely density-of-states basis. The general enhancement of Tc in the martensitic alloys is thought to be a result of a lattice-disorder-induced “soft-phonon” mechanism. Among the various Ti-T2 alloys, the rates of increase of Tc with electronatom ratio (ζ) vary inversely as the “distance” between Ti and T2 in the Periodic Table. This is believed to be due to variation in lattice (solution) strengthening, which tends to offset lattice disorder as a promotor of superconductive electron coupling.

Abstract: Total excavation of a seventh century A.D. Basketmaker III village revealed an arrangement of semisubterranean earth and timber houses, storage pits and structures, and ramadas surrounded by a wooden stockade. In addition to several practical functions including defense, windbreak, and containing young children, the stockade demarcated the village boundary. The complete village plan further enhances our knowledge of Pueblo Indian culture history.
