TL;DR: Lifecycle variables introduced by AM are codified and an aviation case study demonstrates that introducing up to 35% of AM parts to the spare parts inventory improves the system replenishment lead time by up to 33%, thus suggesting AM can be used to mitigate challenges related to spare parts management.
Abstract: To maintain high service levels and mitigate long lead times, many enterprises hold large spare parts inventories. Using additive manufacturing (AM) for spare parts in aviation has been proposed pr...

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: This work presents an approach for energy-aware flow shop scheduling problem and energy-warehouse scheduling problem considering the process speed as the main energy-related decision variable, and shows that it is possible to smooth the energy demand profile and obtain reductions that average 19.8% in energy consumption.
Abstract: The energy-aware scheduling problem is a multi-objective optimization problem where the main goal is to achieve energy savings without affecting productivity in a manufacturing system. In this work ...

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: This study aims to directly impact the engineering managers by bridging the gap between the traditional business management and core engineering management for providing guidance and improving the way in which the practicing engineering managers deal with new product development and management of technology.
Abstract: Engineering managers involved in product development and manufacturing are responsible for proposing and developing ideas and concepts that will benefit new or existing products and processes. Impr...

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: A literature review analyzing and comparing how EA approaches include and consider BPAs is conducted, identifying criteria for adopting an EA approach and highlighting research gaps that suggest the EA-BPA integration field remains largely unexplored and open to further inquiry.
Abstract: Business Process Architecture (BPA) and Enterprise Architecture (EA) require integration to serve as effective management tools. Prior literature reviews have not focused on EA-BPA integration. Thi...

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: A decomposition procedure is proposed on the decision ofSublots sizing that greatly improves the solution obtained using consistent sublots and does so with lower computational requirements than the variable sublot approach.
Abstract: It is possible to obtain greater productivity of a production system by overlapping the operations required to process a manufacturing order. This methodology, known as lot streaming, requires divi...

TL;DR: In this article, the authors explored whether engineers exhibit Ambiguity Aversion, in which individuals prefer an unambiguous option to an objectively equal or superior ambiguous option, has been previously demonstrated to exist in the general population in decision research.
Abstract: This article explores whether engineers exhibit the cognitive bias Ambiguity Aversion. Ambiguity Aversion, in which individuals prefer an unambiguous option to an objectively equal or superior ambiguous option, has been previously demonstrated to exist in the general population in decision research. The research presented here was performed by conducting Ambiguity Aversion experiments from prior research in a sample including roughly equivalent numbers of engineers and non-engineers. This research demonstrates that engineers do exhibit Ambiguity Aversion and that they do so to a significantly greater degree than the general population. This finding may have significant implications for both researchers and practitioners.
