Abstract: Today, microcomputers are included in many kinds of home electrical devices. Also, there has been a rapid proliferation in the number of home information devices such as home computers, video discs, VTR's, and other home information processing or storage means. On the other hand, communications network services have reached new stages of advancement with the development of new communications media such as videotex, broadcast satelites, teletex, and two-way CATV. These have given portability and allowed multiple installation for the home terminal situation.

TL;DR: In this paper, a sub-committee for the purpose of formulating standards for the broadcasting and reception of multichannel television sound which was to include stereophonic as well as second program (second language, for example) enhancements of the main audio program was formed.
Abstract: In late 1978, the Broadcast Television System Committee of the Electronic Industries Association, on behalf of the television industry, formed a sub-committee for the purpose of formulating standards for the broadcasting and reception of multichannel television sound which was to include stereophonic as well as second program (second language, for example) enhancements of the main audio program. On December 22, 1983, the industry chose the Zenith transmission system coupled with the dbx noise reduction system and submitted the combined system, the BTSC system, to the Federal Communications Commission on January 30, 1984. On April 23, 1984, the FCC released a Report and Order in Docket No. 21323 wherein the choice of technical standards was left to the marketplace, but protection was afforded to the pilot frequency of the BTSC system. In addition, if a pilot is transmitted at 15.734 kHz, the BTSC system must be employed as described in the FCC office of Science and Technology Bulletin No. 60.

Abstract: The US Federal Communications Commission recently authorized the broadcast of multichannel sound for television. A five-year industrywide effort sponsored by the Electronics Industries Association resulted in a new standard for transmission of stereo information with the simultaneous opportunity for broadcasting a separate Second Audio Program (SAP) channel. This standard includes a unique three-part companded noise-reduction system intended to allow broadcasters to increase their programing options without reducing present coverage area.

TL;DR: While the Compact Disc (CD) players have been gradually spread, a higher- performance for the error correction capability has been required in order to protect reproduced audio signals against errors due to scratches, finger prints etc. on a disc.
Abstract: While the Compact Disc (CD) players have been gradually spread, a higher- performance for the error correction capability has been required in order to protect reproduced audio signals against errors due to scratches, finger prints etc. on a disc. On the other hand, the CD player have been given attention as a data file system, which provides a lower cost, more capacity and reliability than a conventional data file such as floppy disc system and so on. In order to apply a CD player to such a data file system what is called "CD ROM", an improvement of the error correction capability is also required.

Abstract: In the field of security systems, many soultions have been devised aimed at implementing a "true electronic key" but they are unsatisfactory due to the need of electrical contacts with the lock or of power supply in the remote control systems. In addition, some solutions are not 100% secure because the access code canbe easily copied or falsified; so the best solution is a system that has the following features:--No electrical contacts with the Code Receiver, thus avoiding defective operations in the presence of dirt.-An adequate amount of internal non-volatile coding storage, so as to have a large number of possible combinations.-As greater difficulty as possible in copying or falsifying the internal code.

TL;DR: In the case of large capacitance MLC capacitors, the precious metal cost constitutes large proportion of the selling price of the capacitor as discussed by the authors, which is too expensive for consumer electronics applications.
Abstract: Multilayer ceramic (MLC) capacitor with small size, large capacitance and low cost are increasingly demanded as components for miniaturized electronic equipment. The conventional dielectric materials for MLC capacitors are mainly based on BaTiO3 . They are co-fired in air with internal electrodes at around 1,300 oC.) Therefore, the internal electrodes must be a precious metal, such as platinum or palladium, in order to prevent oxidation or reaction with dielectrics. In the case of large capacitance MLC capacitors, the precious metal cost constitutes large proportion of the selling price of the capacitor. So, large capacitance MLC capacitor is too expensive for consumer electronics applications.

TL;DR: Open captions are not a general solution to the problem of hearing-impaired viewers with normal hearing as discussed by the authors, however, they can be served to a limited extent by the addition of "open captions" to programs, (sub-titles seen on all receivers).
Abstract: At the end of 1971 although there were in the United States and Canada over 100 million television receivers in use, the hearing-impaired community had been largely deprived of the benefits of television programming. With the exception of some sports events, the sound portion of the program carries a significant part of the intelligence so that without it the program cannot be enjoyed. While the hearing-impaired can be served to a limited extent by the addition of "open captions" to programs, (sub-titles seen on all receivers), viewers with normal hearing find open captions distracting and therefore it is not a general solution to the problem.

TL;DR: In this paper, the rotary head was used to improve the sound quality of the 8mm VCR system, and the FM sound multiplex recording system was developed and standardized.
Abstract: Improvement of the sound quality for home VCRs has been strongly desired. As the tape velocity becomes smaller according to the high density recording, the conventional fixed sound head gives poor quality in S/N and frequency response. It is well known that the sound quality is greatly improved by recording the sound signal with rotary heads. Using this concept, FM sound multiplex recording system has been developed and standardized in the 8mm VCR system in March 1983. 1), 2)

TL;DR: The quality of an FM stereo receiver is usually evaluated by its sensitivity, but even a receiver with a high sensitivity cannot always receive the desired broadcast clearly, and the listener is often annoyed by unpleasant noise.
Abstract: The quality of an FM stereo receiver is usually evaluated by its sensitivity. Among experts, the term sensitivity means usable sensitivity measured in a laboratory. But to users who do not have expert knowledge, it has the broader meaning of "it can receive clearly without noise." In practical use, however, even a receiver with a high sensitivity cannot always receive the desired broadcast clearly, and the listener is often annoyed by unpleasant noise.

TL;DR: In this article, signal processing ICs for a single-chip CCD color camera have been developed, and the signal processing method and the structure of the ICs are reported.
Abstract: As home videotape recorders have come into wide use, a need for a reduction in the size, weight, and power consumption of color video cameras has become obvious. This need can be met using a solid-state imager such as a CCD, but only if at the same time system ICs are used for the circuits. For this purpose signal-processing ICs for a single-chip CCD color camera have been developed. The signal- processing method and the structure of the ICs will be reported.

TL;DR: The main application for monolithic integrated GHz-Frequency dividers in Si-planar technology is in automatic tuning systems used in TV-tuners and thus normally in the frequency range up to 1 GHz, to guarantee the demanded high input sensitivity of a few millivolts over the total frequency range.
Abstract: Todays main application for monolithic integrated GHz-Frequency dividers in Si-planar technology is in automatic tuning systems used in TV-tuners and thus normally in the frequency range up to 1 GHz. To guarantee the demanded high input sensitivity of a few millivolts over the total frequency range, a preamplifier is incorporated in these IC's. For equivalent applications in cable-TV, the customer requires max. frequencies up to 1.5 GHz, in the case of satellite-TV with direct receiving even up to 2.4-2.5 GHz.

TL;DR: High quality stereophonic sound from a television receiver requires improvements in thermal noise performance and in intercarrier buzz, over current practice, which can be reduced by lowering transmitter incidental carrier phase modulation and by receiver Nyquist slope elimination.
Abstract: High quality stereophonic sound from a television receiver requires improvements in thermal noise performance and in intercarrier buzz, over current practice. Buzz can be reduced by lowering transmitter incidental carrier phase modulation and by receiver Nyquist slope elimination. Buzz due to tuner-caused spurious phase modulation is eliminated through an intercarrier detection process. Nyquist slope elimination is combined with intercarrier detection in the Quasi-split, or quasi-parallel, sound type receiver.1,2 The improvement in noise performance is obtained through dbx companding which also contributes to the reduction of intercarrier buzz and distortion.

TL;DR: This paper will attempt to make the viewpoint of at least one manufacturer known, as well as discuss and analyze several different methods for measuring RFI isolation.
Abstract: Signal leakage continues to be a critical issue for systems operators and hardware manufacturers alike. The FCC's viewpoint and their actions surrounding this issue have been well documented in the past several months, as have been the opinions of several major MSO's. The viewpoint of the manufacturer, however, has been noticeably absent from recent publications documenting the issue. This paper will attempt to make the viewpoint of at least one manufacturer known, as well as discuss and analyze several different methods for measuring RFI isolation.

TL;DR: In this article, the transfer drum method is used to transfer mirror image patterns of mother and copy tape to achieve high speed duplicating of half-inch video tape for home-use VCRs.
Abstract: A system for duplicating prerecorded video tapes at high speed has been developed. The system employs contact printing and can handle half-inch video tapes for home-use VCRs. In contact printing, the mother tape must have three times higher coercivity than that of a copy tape with a coercivity of 650 Oersted. For this purpose, a metal tape was developed whose coercivity is approximately 2000 Oersted. To attain a duplicating speed of more than one hundred times the normal speed, the "Transfer Drum Method" has been devised. Mirror mother and copy tapes are wrapped around the transfer drum, so that the coated surfaces of both tapes face each other. By means of air pressure the tapes are pressed firmly together and a bias transfer field is applied using a stationary transfer bias head; these conditions allow a mirror image pattern of mother tape to be transferred at the same time. The system can handle either pancake or cassette copy tapes, a feature which decreases duplication cost and increases operational reliability.

TL;DR: The voice characteristics conversion technique described herein is best suited for speech systems either a text-to-speech or analysis-synthesis (meaning record-playback) using LPC synthesizers.
Abstract: Text-to-speech systems available today generate virtually unlimited speech from a prestored component sounds library, which is frequently created from a male voice. A major reason for that is due to the low pitch profile in the male voice. For example, the speech analysis software and commercial synthesizers seem to work more accurately and better with the male voice than the female voice. To overcome the analysis and synthesis problem on the female voice and to provide the choices of having more than one sex of voices output from a text-to-speech system, some means of voice characteristics conversion is needed. To do so, it is important to first understand what parameters in speech define the perception of different sex. An attempt is underway herein to first study these parameters and then to learn to adjust them so that the voice of one sex can be converted to another or from one voice character to another. The voice characteristics conversion technique described herein is best suited for speech systems either a text-to-speech or analysis-synthesis (meaning record-playback) using LPC synthesizers.

TL;DR: An automatic kinescope biasing system has been developed which addresses many of the classical problem in this type of system and uses a grid pulsing technique to gain inmunity to heater-cathode leakage.
Abstract: An automatic kinescope biasing system has been developed which addresses many of the classical problem in this type of system. The system uses a grid pulsing technique to gain inmunity to heater-cathode leakage. The current reference employed varies with the cutoff of the gun in use to minimize bias error and a unique kine driver configuration allows cathode current and sensing to be performed at a low voltage, low impedance output without the use of extra semi-conductor devices. The operation of the system is described and all pertinent relationships are derived.
