Abstract: This paper surveys Theory of Inventive Problem Solving (TRIZ) integration into other creativity tools, methods and philosophies using a literature review of publications from 1995 to 2006. After explaining the motivation of the integrations, a categorical analysis is carried out on how TRIZ has been integrated with these tools based on publications of combining TRIZ with design problem-solving tools. The applications of the integrations in different industries are summarised, and possible future directions are presented. This paper can satisfy the needs of researchers and practitioners for easy reference of TRIZ and problem-solving tools, and hence promote the future development of TRIZ.

Abstract: Our vision is a future industrial system that delivers high value to its growing base of customers around the globe, while using, at most, a quarter of the current resources. The urgency for change is now feeding through from scientists into mainstream government, business and academic thinking. This sustainable industrial system would be very different to today’s global industry – less homogenous with different business models and different relationships, creating different products and services – requiring new strategies, frameworks, and tools. In order to achieve this target a system design approach is required. Systemic implications for sustainable manufacturing, supply chain design, sustainability performance measurement and management, and organisational change are provided in this paper. Open questions and discussion about tomorrow activities are derived, providing recommendations for educators, researchers, industrialists, and policy makers.

Abstract: Over the last two decades, service organisations have embraced total quality management (TQM) as an effective management tool to improve their service quality. They have begun to show a keen interest in TQM by working on quality and related areas. TQM has become a major area of attention to practitioners, managers and researchers due to its strong impact on business performance, customer satisfaction and profitability. In the light of this, an attempt has been made to study and understand the theory and concept of TQM, its benefits as well as various facets of service components and its classification. This study also explores the literature on the implementation of TQM in selected service industries. The finding of this study provides a rich contribution towards TQM theory, its role in service sector, as well as presents the different components of services. This paper can help business managers and quality practitioners in better understanding TQM, service systems concept as well as TQM implementation in service sector. The scope for future study is presented at the end.

Abstract: This study constructs multi-item scales to measure key components of managerial and technological innovations and examines their impact on operational performance. It also examines the direct effects of managerial and technological innovations on customer satisfaction as well as the indirect effects through operational performance. Data were collected from 214 manufacturing plants in the machinery, electrical and electronics and automobile industries in seven countries - Austria, Finland, Germany, Italy, Japan, Korea and the USA. We find that managerial innovation significantly and positively affects overall operational performance, quality performance, delivery performance, and flexibility performance. The results show that technological innovation significantly and positively affects overall operational performance, cost performance, delivery performance, flexibility performance, and innovative performance. We also find that both types of innovation have a direct effect and an indirect effect through operational performance on customer satisfaction.

Abstract: Trade liberalisation and changes in the Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) have fashioned new dynamics in the pharmaceutical industry across the globe. Firms are forced to bring changes to their research, innovation, technology and marketing practices by a reconfiguration of their competencies and resources. The most common strategic concern that Trade Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPs) has raised for Indian firms is the perceived need for R&D and technological strength. For firms that have given little attention to research and innovation in the past, this transition is very difficult. Indian firms have responded to these changes in novel and complex ways. Employing firm-level case studies, this paper examines the contemporary strategic approaches adopted by Indian leaders for integrating new knowledge and capabilities in order to develop innovation competencies for tomorrow. Using empirical evidence from firm-level investigations, this paper shows how Indian firms are evolving from reverse engineering outfits catering to domestic market to technologically advanced and sophisticated organisations capable of catering to diverse markets.
