TL;DR: Data analysis of the structural equation model (SEM) has shown that the quality of information and the characteristics of end-users affect task support satisfaction.
Abstract: Information systems (IS) are designed with the intention of helping workers perform their tasks. This is not necessarily obvious in the systems' failures. Frequently, one of the reasons for failure is that the systems did not help the workers perform their tasks better. Views of the IS professionals can aid in comprehending the effect of IS on task support satisfaction. A model was developed on the basis of the IS success model. Survey data was collected. Data analysis of the structural equation model (SEM) has shown that the quality of information and the characteristics of end-users affect task support satisfaction.

TL;DR: Examination of the content of MIS-related job advertisements over a 20-year period traces the rise and fall in demand for certain IT skills and knowledge and identifies the growing strength or stability of others.
Abstract: The rapidly changing information technology (IT) environment continues to pose a challenging dilemma for both management information systems (MIS) managers and MIS educators at all levels, especially the collegiate level. This research examines the content of MIS-related job advertisements over a 20-year period: late 1970s-late 1990s. It is the continuation of a study initially published in The Journal of Computer Information Systems (6) and includes the data that represents the late 1990s timeframe. Results trace the rise and fall in demand for certain IT skills and knowledge and identify the growing strength or stability of others. The study clearly exposes the great diversity in the MIS job market. This diversity is the root cause of the dilemma confronting MIS managers and MIS educators as they try to recruit workers from or prepare students for the changing IT environment.

TL;DR: It is shown connectionist models can be used to learn software effort when the available data set is small and, whenever carefully designed, could help knowledge discovery and software effort estimation.
Abstract: Mining information and knowledge from very large databases is recognized as a key research area in the machine learning and expert systems field. We show connectionist models can be used to learn software effort when the available data set is small. We use a connectionist model to learn software effort from a small training data set of several software projects and validate the model on a holdout sample. Several design issues associated with developing connectionist models on a small training data set are described. Our research indicates that connectionist models, whenever carefully designed, could help knowledge discovery and software effort estimation.

TL;DR: This paper presents an SDSS that is designed based on a market-driven target costing (TC) strategy, and presents both the structure and subsystems of the TC-based S DSS.
Abstract: Most Strategic Decision Support Systems (SDSSs) are general DSS in nature. Very few SDSS have been designed specifically based on particular competitive strategies. In this paper, we present an SDSS that is designed based on a market-driven target costing (TC) strategy. We present both the structure and subsystems of the TC-based SDSS. To effectively accomplish strategic goals, such an SDSS should be incorporated into a firm's enterprise system (ESs). Existing enterprise systems such as enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems are really “a patchwork of enterprise programs.” An ERP system intends to integrate and automate traditional back office functions such as finance, human resources, operations, etc. These functions are transaction-oriented. Tremendous potential can be cultivated through enhancing the decision support capability of ESs. The TC-based SDSS integrates transactions with strategies and therefore provides an excellent model for enhancing decision support capabilities of enterprise systems.

TL;DR: Analysis of data collected from more than two dozen large companies suggests that the DW concept has been implemented quite differently across enterprises, and that DW practices are still at an early stage of development.
Abstract: While data warehousing (DW) has emerged as a key component of many organizations' information systems, few studies have assessed companies' DW practices. This research examines a range of DW development and management issues. Data collected from more than two dozen large companies suggest that the DW concept has been implemented quite differently across enterprises, and that DW practices are still at an early stage of development. The results are also compared across two different DW architecture types, the hub & spoke and federated data mart approaches. This analysis suggests that the choice of architecture appears to have an important effect on a number of DW development and management measures. The results of this study should be useful to companies looking to initiate or expand their DW operations and to researchers in understanding the current scope and operations of companies' data warehousing efforts.

TL;DR: There are seven dimensions of criteria which are critical to the evaluation and selection of ISPs: performance of information systems; awareness of and response to customer requirements; ISPs' market capability; performance of networking; ISP's credibility and fame; provision of customized professional services; and innovative R&D into technology.
Abstract: The progressive advancements in information technology (IT) coupled with the global expansion of communication infrastructure has enabled firms to create and sustain large scale strategic advantages, with the result of an ever-increasing demand from firms for new types of information services (IS) to facilitate and coordinate their daily operations. Hence, the aim of this research is to explore the underlying dimensions of criteria for the evaluation and selection of information service providers (ISPs). By undertaking a review of the literature, we first analyze the dynamics of ISPs to define their present day role before going on to develop a questionnaire for the field survey. Based on the data collected from 57 firms, two distinct procedures are adopted to carry out the exploratory factor analyses in order to derive the preliminary factor solutions. Followed by a process of post-analysis validation, these empirically derived factor solutions are reviewed and refined in accordance with domain experts' ...

Journal Article
TL;DR: It is found that systems developers, who perceive their tool as restrictive, enjoy CASE less and think it less useful than those who perceive the tool as flexible.
Abstract: Research on CASE tools includes conflicting accounts. Many report high productivity gains and improved quality of systems developed. Others report high costs and few gains, organizations abandoning the use of CASE, or seldom using the CASE tools. Organizational differences may, in part, be attributed to the underlying support philosophy of the CASE tool. We explore the tool philosophy in terms of restrictiveness or flexibility. Systems developers in four organizations were surveyed for perceptions of their CASE tool and of their jobs. We found that systems developers, who perceive their tool as restrictive, enjoy CASE less and think it less useful than those who perceive their tool as flexible. The people who perceived their tool as being restrictive also perceived their job as being lower quality by offering lower autonomy and lower skill variety.

TL;DR: An information management course designed for and delivered to non-IT majors is described, indicating that students find instruction on entity-relationship models, physical database design, and data quality especially useful.
Abstract: The management of information is an increasingly important function in organizations. Yet despite the importance of information management, many MBA programs provide non-IT majors with only a limited exposure to information management topics. This paper describes an information management course designed for and delivered to non-IT majors. Results of a survey of student perceptions of course topics are reported. Results indicate that students find instruction on entity-relationship models, physical database design, and data quality especially useful and find instruction on entity-relationship models, physical database design, and data privacy especially interesting.

TL;DR: The first stage of a longitudinal study is detailed, which surveys a targeted selection of Australian ISPs to determine the initial effects of and attitudes toward the legislation, and the results suggest dissatisfaction with the legislation on the part of ISPs, and adverse effects on the online industry.
Abstract: The Internet is receiving considerable attention on a global scale. Some countries are examining the regulation of this technology, and Australia is one of the first to implement legislation to restrict access to offensive or illegal material at the Internet Service Provider (ISP) source. Given the debate surrounding both the efficacy of online regulation in general and this legislation in particular, some objective analysis of initial ISP reactions is of benefit to researchers, practitioners and legislators alike. This paper details the first stage of a longitudinal study, which surveys a targeted selection of Australian ISPs to determine the initial effects of and attitudes toward the legislation. The results suggest dissatisfaction with the legislation on the part of ISPs, and adverse effects on the online industry. Concerns are raised that the legislation will not be effective. The study raises a number of interesting issues that merit further research.
