Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this paper, a qualitative analysis of in-depth interviews with farmers was conducted to determine which characteristics make four common BMPs more or less acceptable to agricultural producers, and found that perceived high levels of relative advantage (e.g., reduced inputs, time-savings, and on-farm and environmental benefits), compatibility (with farm system and needs of producer), and observability (observing practice's advantages) are most important in increasing adoption of conservation practices.

243 citations

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this article, the authors present a review of reforestation assessment that highlights the need to not only consider short-term establishment success, but also longer-term growth and maturation success, environmental success and socio-economic success.

183 citations

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this article, the authors explored the relationship between farm adaptation and succession at the Rural Urban Interface (RUI), and examined how succession is related to the different types of enterprises found at the RUI and the types of growth strategies these farm families implement.

172 citations

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this article, a comparative analysis of halal market trends and developments across four European countries is presented, based on research carried out during the EU funded Dialrel project, which draws attention to the ways in which EU legislation and WTO trade guidelines hinder attempts to standardize halal certification by giving equal weight to pre and non-stun halal slaughter practices emanating from different regional schools of thought within Sunni Islam.

151 citations

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: The authors argue that the dynamics of the "rules of the game" in the agricultural field have simultaneously led to a broadening of the good farming ideal, and to a fragmentation, whereby individual farmers prioritise a subset of this broad range.

150 citations

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this article, the authors consider how shifts within the social sciences towards conceptualising spatiality in relational terms have unfolded in rural studies in particular ways over the past decade or so, and identify the notion of countertopography as a promising conceptual and methodological addition to the rural scholar's toolkit.

147 citations

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors examine the receptivity of farmers to the idea of landscape-scale, collaborative agri-environment schemes (cAES) based on semi-structured interviewing in three English case-study areas.

132 citations

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: It is concluded that the relatively short travel distances required to access community activities was a key factor in the high levels of community inclusion, however, the car-dependent nature of travel overall means that there is a rising risk of mobility-related exclusion in rural areas, particularly amongst the oldest old.

129 citations

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this article, the authors analyze the theoretical and empirical parameters of social regulation in contemporary global food markets, focusing on the rapidly expanding Fair Trade initiative, which seeks to transform North/South relations by fostering ethical consumption, producer empowerment, and certified commodity sales.

117 citations

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors examined the extent to which rural studies conducted in Europe (compared to other countries in the Global North) have addressed the phenomenon of rural ageing and compared the research goals identified by the International Rural Ageing Project (IRAP) in 1998 with progress in this area.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this paper, a cross-sectional analysis of socio-economic performance across 33 small mining towns in Western Australia is presented, and the results of the analysis suggest that socioeconomic wellbeing in these towns is highly variable and contingent on a range of factors including the nature of the particular commodity, company structure, and location.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this article, the authors examine rural population ageing in the United States with a particular focus on the contrasting contexts in which older rural residents live and explore challenges and opportunities associated with the ageing of rural baby boomers.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this article, the authors focus on the complex meaning and role of the city in American and French rural gay men's imaginary and life experience and present four life itineraries which highlight the central role the city has for rural men when exploring their same-sex desires and attractions.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this article, the authors present an analysis on how livelihood assets and strategies of smallholders in Laikipia County, Kenya, have changed within the last decade and discuss the implications for development interventions.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this article, the authors used current and historical surveys across a number of irrigation districts in the southern Murray-Darling Basin to study the changing nature of farm succession and found that those with no successor in place are more likely to go into a period of stagnation (such as selling land, not adopting efficient irrigation infrastructure and not increasing irrigated area).

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: Within Australia's tropical savanna zone, the northernmost frontier regions have experienced the swiftest transition towards multifunctional occupance, as a formerly flimsy productivist mode is readily displaced by more complex modes, with greater prominence given to consumption, protection and Indigenous values.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this article, the authors investigated the nature and causes of vulnerability to bushfires in the Wulgulmerang district of East Gippsland, Victoria, in south-eastern Australia.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this paper, an analysis of 42 interviews with owners, sharemilkers and workers on dairy farms in New Zealand is presented, where behaviour instead is seen as part of a self-reinforcing culture in which animals, humans and the physical structure all contribute to the development of farm specific ways of doing and being.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this article, the authors review the patterns and dynamics of land-use change associated with bioenergy crops and focus on four regions as the most prominent locations in which these patterns and changes occur: Brazil, Indonesia and Malaysia; the United States of America (U.S.A); and the European Union (EU).

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: This article explored how rural older Australians (retirement migrants and long-term residents) use place to sustain and build a sense of self at a time when many are susceptible to age-related loss.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: This paper investigated the characteristics and motivations of migrants to less-popular rural areas using survey data (N ǫ = 664) for four municipalities in the North of the Netherlands.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors proposed an index that can measure the social capital of local action group (LAG) projects based on four indicators: number of ties, bridging social capital, recognition, and diversity.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this paper, a case study of a self-termed "rural business" is used to deconstruct the concept of a rural business and shed light on specific features of "operating in a rural area" and "serving a rural population".

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors argue that due to the connection between residence and productive assets (particularly land) inherent in farming, agricultural gentrification represents a special case, distinct from rural and urban gentrification, where it is possible from within the existing farm household.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this article, the authors examined the regulatory challenges of using organic certification as a means of linking farm-level management to the sustainability of coastal (mangrove) landscapes and concluded that to overcome conflicts of interest and legitimate representation in organic certification, the social and economic conditions of production require regulatory intervention from provincial and local level government.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this paper, an anonymous self-complete postal questionnaire was distributed to a sample of households in twenty rural communities in rural Victoria, Australia using the Australia Post Unaddressed Select Service, where householders 50 years of age and older were invited to complete the survey.
