A questionnaire with 109 questions was used asking about major domains of life: drug use, sexuality, religiosity, school. There were more females 52.3% than males 47.7% in the sample. Most of the participants already had their first sexual intercourse, 53.5%, most of them males (64.6%). The average for first sexual intercourse was lower for males ( M=13.64; dp= 1.7) than females ( M=14.79; dp= 1.4). Results indicate an expected rate of pregnancy and abortion for low SES young. We stress the low age for first sexual intercourse and the fact that ¼ of our sample has an irregular contraceptive method. We discuss about contraceptive method and abortion linked to the adolescents health.

TL;DR: This paper investigated the motivational orientations and beliefs about effort, intelligence, luck, and about the necessary conditions to achieve success in school as well as the expectations to overcome a poor academic performance in a sample of 120 students from elementary school.
Abstract: The main goal of the present study was to investigate the motivational orientations and beliefs about effort, intelligence, luck, and about the necessary conditions to achieve success in school as well as the expectations to overcome a poor academic performance in a sample of 120 students from elementary school. The relationship between such variables, and their correlation to academic performance, gender and school grades was also analyzed. Data were acquired by applying the Structured Interview of Educational Beliefs and Motivational Orientation for Student and School Achievement Test from Stein in an individual basis. Results indicate a predominance of intrinsic motivation and a highly appropriate beliefs pattern to motivation and learning. Given the educational implications involved, boys, repeater and extrinsically motivated student beliefs must be carefully taken into account to better plan more focused interventions.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors studied how social representations of HIV influence preventive measures against this virus in conjugal relations between heterosexual men and women, and found that the known partner is less dangerous than the unknown ones.
Abstract: This paper has the goal of understanding how social representations of HIV influence preventive measures against this virus in conjugal relations between heterosexual men and women. Forty-eight people took part on this research, half men and half women, heterosexuals living as couples. Age ranged from 19 to 74 years. For the analysis of collected material, a descending hierarchical classification of narratives (ALCESTE) was used. Results have showed through AIDS social representations that the interviewed subjects proceeded with caution when dealing with people from specific social groups, adopting the idea of "unsafe groups". Besides, it was identified that they related AIDS to fear and sex with people who had not safe sexual behaviors. It was possible to discover, with this study, that the known partner is less dangerous than the unknown ones. There was a specific way of denial of the risk by the subjects, due to stable relationships they had.

TL;DR: An experience of psychological intervention with a patient with acute lymphoid leukemia, a potentially fatal disease, focusing on the monitoring provided throughout their treatment, until the moment of his death in a ward of a general hospital in the context of palliative care.
Abstract: In the middle of the growing denial of suffering in contemporary society, death is increasingly banished from the daily reality and confined to hospitals. This study aims to describe an experience of psychological intervention with a patient with acute lymphoid leukemia, a potentially fatal disease, focusing on the monitoring provided throughout their treatment, from diagnosis to lack of therapeutic possibilities, until the moment of his death in a ward of a general hospital in the context of palliative care . The body of the study consisted of the clinical material systematized on the basis of the psychological interventions carried out over a period of two years (2001-2003). An effort was made to understand the phases of mourning experienced by the patient and the possibility of psychological intervention as death approached. The possibility of being present throughout the stages of illness culminating in the moment of death represented a unique and transforming experience both for the patient and for the psychologist who assisted him at the time of his departure..

Abstract: This manuscript presents the Sport Psychology field as a psychologist's emergent field of action in Brazil. A historical analysis is performed concerning the path of Sport Psychology presenting the areas of professional action (research, teaching and intervention), the role of the sport psychologist (researcher, academic teacher and consultant) and the field's recent scientific state. Although the vast professional field, the diversity of knowledge needed to act in this subdivision of Psychology is an intervening element, resulting in an insufficient professional formation and a division of the professional action into two specialties: the Clinical Psychology and Educational Psychology applied to sport. Finally, it is highlighted the emergency in the comprehension of this aspects, providing background to understand the importance of the professional qualification in the field of Sport and Physical Exercise.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors formulated a hypothesis that the creation of new forms of treatment in mental health does not determine that the mentally-diseased can effectively assume the condition of a citizen.
Abstract: The aim of this article is to question a very important device of the actual Brazilian psychiatric reform process: psycho-social rehabilitation. The authors formulated a hypothesis that the creation of new forms of treatment in mental health does not determine that the mentally-diseased can effectively assume the condition of a citizen. Old functional sanatorium principles may be present, being the basis of services and practices. It has been observed that the psychosocial rehabilitation has a great importance in the interviewed people's lives; however it presents the risk of promoting the maintenance of the "psychiatrized" condition. In order to think about this question, we have to turn to Michel Foucault's Genealogy, which consists in the problematization of the practices of power underlying the contemporary psychiatry discourses in Brazil.

TL;DR: In this article, a study was conducted to assess the manifestation of stress, self-perception of stress and stressing work factors in substitutive mental health service professionals, where the instruments employed were Lipp's Inventory of Stress Symptoms in Adults and a Complementary Script.
Abstract: Mental health professionals are particularly vulnerable to stress, considering the characteristics of the work they develop. The purpose of this study was to assess the manifestation of stress, self-perception of stress, and stressing work factors in substitutive mental health service professionals. Twenty-five workers, working for at least six months, took part in the study. The instruments employed were Lipp's Inventory of Stress Symptoms in Adults and a Complementary Script. Quantitative data were treated by descriptive statistics, and the remaining data were analyzed qualitatively. It was observed that 36.0% of the professional had stress manifestations, and 44.0% perceived they were under stress. Work conditions and relationships at work were the most frequent factors associated to the perception of being under stress. In conclusion, professionals experience stressors associated with the changes implied in the psychosocial paradigm of care. Thus, there is a need to make direct interventions toward the development of coping strategies in stressing occupational situations.

TL;DR: Temperament is a personal variable which interacts with environmental variables and therefore may have an influence on child developmental pathways as mentioned in this paper, and the most frequently used theoretical approach for studying temperament was the Rothbarts psychobiological approach.
Abstract: Temperament is a personal variable which interacts with environmental variables and therefore may have an influence on child developmental pathways. The purpose of the present study was to review systematically the empirical studies published from 2001 to 2006 about temperament and its relationship to child development. Fifty empirical studies indexed in the data bases PsycInfo, MEDLINE and LILACS were selected through systematic bibliographic review. It was found that the most frequently used theoretical approach for studying temperament was the Rothbarts psychobiological approach. Temperament was assessed predominantly through questionnaires answered by mothers. The findings of the studies showed that children with temperament characterized by high levels of negative mood, fear, shyness and anger are vulnerable for exhibiting developmental problems. Temperament with high levels of effortful control, which indicates the ability to suppress behavioral and motivational trends guided by the affect and to reprogram the behavior in situations of conflict of interests, is associated to adaptive developmental outcomes.

TL;DR: In this paper, a coparentalidade of cinco casais (pai/mae) com filhos com autismo, cujas criancas tinha entre 4 and 7 anos, was examined, showing that as tarefas parentais nao sao compartilhadas de forma igualitaria entre o casal.

Abstract: This article aimed to develop reflection about the spirituality and religiosity use by mothers, users of Kangaroo Method in a Unified Health System (Sistema Unico de Saude) maternity in Rio Grande do Norte State. The approach used was the qualitative research, using participant observation, informal chats, semi directed interviews, and mothers' life story as procedure to data collection. Data were collected through meetings in Mothers in prayer (Maes em Oracao), group developed by nursing team in this maternity. As the result, the analysis showed that the spiritual practice and the religiosity were used as a support in difficult situations at Neonatal Intensive Therapy Unit, as well as allowed the possibility to speak about spirituality in this maternity. This practice, even unconnected with everyday health care, contributes to humanize health care assistance, tightening the bond among mother, child, family and multidisciplinary team as well.

TL;DR: In this paper, a computer program assessed the participants' initial repertoire based on a stimulus-stimulus and stimulus-response relational network, identifying present and absent relations, which served as a basis for the teaching and testing of conditional relations thereafter.
Abstract: This study investigated the process involved in the acquisition of number concepts by intellectually disabled adults. Two individuals, aged between 16 and 20 years old, attending a special education school participated. A computer program assessed the participants' initial repertoire based on a stimulus-stimulus and stimulus-response relational network, identifying present and absent relations, which served as a basis for the teaching and testing of conditional relations thereafter. Next phase consisted of teaching the necessary relations, followed by immediate tests to evaluate emerging relations. The results showed the efficacy of the suggested computer-based curriculum and the efficacy of the used teaching procedures, due to the concept number acquisition in a reduced period of time. A complex relational network involving number, digits and values was formed through direct teaching of only two relations. The computer based teaching procedures optimized the learning process, increased data collection and procedural reliability and controlled contingencies that allowed precise teaching.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors discuss the results of a research carried out at a Children Education Municipal School (EMEI) in the city of Sao Paulo, and aims at identifying both the indicators of involvement in the work with children, and those determining the building of an inclusive environment.
Abstract: This article discusses the results of a research carried out at a Children Education Municipal School - EMEI - in the city of Sao Paulo, and aims at identifying both the indicators of involvement in the work with children, and those determining the building of an inclusive environment. The data collection was accomplished through observations during the three steps of Children Education, and through survey on pedagogical documents. The work developed according to diversity presents important contradictions to be thought about, expressed through unequal treatment toward children. The concept of 'inclusion' is restricted to assisting disabled children and the needs of both the remaining children and the professionals working at school are most of the time disregarded. The isolation and the involvement with marginal questions of the pedagogical work are crucial points to be considered when coping with attitude barriers in building an inclusive environment. The project is supported by FAPESP.

TL;DR: In this paper, a research intervention that aimed to implement and evaluate the impact of an adapted program existing in literature about personal problem-solving skills was reported, with 30 children aged between 6 and 7 years old in the first grade of elementary school.
Abstract: The present work reports a research intervention that aimed to implement and evaluate the impact of an adapted program existing in literature about Interpersonal Problem-Solving Skills. Participants included 30 children aged between 6 and 7 years old in the first grade of elementary school. All students were from a public school from Minas Gerais state. The study involved pre-and post- assessment using the instrument SSRS-BR and non-systematic observations carried out by researchers and teachers. Additionally, the researchers held meetings and guidance to care providers and teachers of the children. The comparative results of pre-and post-assessment indicated an increase of some skills in children as empathy, assertiveness, expression of positive feeling, civility and responsibility, converging with the data from comments made. There was greater awareness among parents and teachers about the educational strategies and management of undesirable behaviors. It was also found a greater opening regarding preventive practices of school psychology in the educational settings.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors identified the characteristics of adherence behavior in adolescents living with HIV/aids according to the perceptions of these adolescents and their primary caregivers, and suggested that adherence difficulties can be worked by improving communication with the family as well as with the health professionals.
Abstract: Contrary to what is observed in adults, adherence to antiretrovirals in adolescents with HIV hasn't been well studied. This research aimed at identifying the characteristics of adherence behavior in adolescents living with HIV/aids, according to the perceptions of these adolescents and their primary caregivers. Nine dyads constituted by the youngsters and the caregivers participated on the study. The adolescents were between 12 and 17 years of age, six of them were male and all of them were infected due to vertical transmition. Semi- structured interviews were conducted individually with all participants. Results indicated difficulties in adherence, especially in circumstances in which medication needed to be taken outside the domestic environment (n=6). Moreover, reports of missing doses (n=4) and delayed intake of antiretrovirals (n=7) were common. It is suggested that adherence difficulties can be worked by improving communication with the family as well as with the health professionals.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors describe the meanings of group practice present in eighteen semi-structured interviews with psychologists that work in the public health context in Uberlândia-MG.
Abstract: Group work has been considered an alternative of psychological intervention in the public health context. The objective of this research was to describe the meanings of group practice present in eighteen semi- structured interviews with psychologists that work in the public health context in Uberlândia-MG. The discourse analysis, based on Social Constructionism perspective, allowed the identification of four interpretative repertoires used to describe group work: group as a collective space; as an alternative to the demand; as a mediating activity; and as strangeness. The use of the repertoires legitimized group work in different ways. However, the predominance of a clinical-individualist bias on the interviewees' speech hasn't allowed a description of group practice designed to teams and communities and sensitive to the level of health attention. Thus, it is necessary to construct new ways of saying/doing group work in the Brazilian health context.

TL;DR: In this article, a tareas sobre the teoria de la mente were used to evaluate empatia and motivación prosocial, and no correlation was found between the two factors, other than the habilidad de compartir emociones and the motivation prosocial.

Abstract: The present study investigated the mother's relationship with her female support figures and the feelings regarding motherhood, in the first quarter of the baby's life. Forty-seven primiparus mothers, of varied socioeconomic levels, with a stable relationship with their partners, took part in the study. Through an individual interview we investigated who were the people who gave support to the mother and which was their participation. The mothers said they had a female support figure (98%) and in most cases (54%) these women served as identification models, being most of them (47%) their own mothers. The partners were mentioned in all cases as somebody who offered help in caring for the baby and/or in the domestic activities. The findings support the literature that indicates that in spite of the importance of the husband, female support figures are very important during this period, to give support, be together, as well as to value and instruct the new mother, serving as identification models for them.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors assessed the feeling of being burdened caused when caring for adult schizophrenia patients, with the aim of learning about the objective and subjective burden, as well as describing the socio-economic condition of the participants.
Abstract: This study assessed the feeling of being burdened caused when caring for adult schizophrenia patients, with the aim of learning about the objective and subjective burden, as well as describing the socio-economic condition of the participants. The data collection took place at a public Hospital, in Teresina city, Piaui state - Brazil. The sample consisted of 14 family members who care directly or indirectly for a schizophrenic patient. After analyzing the data, it was found that there is a similar objective and subjective overload in areas related to normal day-to-day care, supervision of behavioral problems, impact on daily routines and concerns with the patient. The caregivers almost always need to cover costs that have arisen in connection with the patient. Therefore, it is clear that mental health strategies are needed to enable support, guidance and preparation of families in the management of psychiatric patient care.
