TL;DR: In this article, the role of upward social comparison in the relationship between passive social network site use and adolescent materialism was examined, and regression analysis results showed that passive social networks site use significantly predicted adolescent materialistic behavior.
Abstract: We examined the role of upward social comparison in the relationship between passive social network site use and adolescent materialism. A sample of 718 Chinese adolescents completed measures of passive social network site use, upward social comparison, and materialism. Correlational analysis results showed that passive social network site use was significantly correlated with upward social comparison and adolescent materialism. In addition, regression analysis results showed that passive social network site use significantly predicted adolescent materialism through the mediation of upward social comparison. Theoretical and practical implications are discussed.

TL;DR: Li et al. as mentioned in this paper examined the mediating role of work engagement in predicting organizational citizenship behavior and counterproductive work behavior and found that both turnover intention and work engagement were significantly correlated with organizational citizenship behaviour and counterproductive behaviour.
Abstract: We examined the mediating role of work engagement in predicting organizational citizenship behavior and counterproductive work behavior. The 227 participants were employees of 2 major retail banks in China, who completed a survey. The results showed that both turnover intention and work engagement were significantly correlated with organizational citizenship behavior and counterproductive work behavior. Results of structural equation modeling indicated that work engagement partially mediated both the turnover intention–organizational citizenship behavior relationship and the turnover intention–counterproductive work behavior relationship. These results extend prior findings and shed light on how turnover intention affects organizational citizenship behavior and counterproductive work behavior. Theoretical and practical implications are discussed.

TL;DR: Li et al. as mentioned in this paper examined the influence of a self-sacrificial leadership style on employees' unethical pro-organizational behavior, as well as the mediating effect of identification with leader and the moderating role of collectivism.
Abstract: Employee behavior that is unethical but that may potentially benefit the organization is termed unethical pro-organizational behavior. Based on social identity theory, we examined the influence of a self-sacrificial leadership style on employees’ unethical pro-organizational behavior, as well as the mediating effect of identification with leader and the moderating role of collectivism. Participants were 336 Chinese employees in different industries including telecommunications, manufacturing, and catering. Results show that self-sacrificial leadership was positively related to the employees’ unethical pro-organizational behavior, and the positive influence was mediated by identification with leader. Additionally, collectivism moderated the relationship between self-sacrificial leadership and the employees’ unethical pro-organizational behavior, such that the positive relationship between self-sacrificial leadership and unethical pro-organizational behavior was stronger when collectivism was higher. Theoretical and practical implications are discussed.

TL;DR: Wang et al. as discussed by the authors tracked public reactions through posts on Chinese social media to analyze the dynamics of public moral motivation and found that disaster increased moral motivation only when the situation was severe, and such augmentation rapidly faded when the disaster was under control and recovery began.
Abstract: As COVID-19 struck worldwide, we were inspired by behavioral immune system theory and wondered whether there would be changes to public morality brought about by the pandemic. We tracked public reactions through posts on Chinese social media to analyze the dynamics of public moral motivation. Big data analysis shows that the impact of disaster upon moral motivation was context-sensitive. The level of the severity of the disaster played a leading role in variation of moral motivation. We found that disaster increased moral motivation only when the situation was severe, and such augmentation rapidly faded when the disaster was under control and recovery began. The sentiment of news shared during the pandemic played a regulating role, such that positive or encouraging news helped augment moral motivation only when the situation was severe. Finally, we found that the pandemic increased expressions of both agency and communion in a similar way to that of moral motivation.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors translated the Short Boredom Proneness Scale (SBPS) into Chinese and tested its psychometric properties with 694 Chinese college students, and found that the results for the SBPS were significantly correlated with the state boredom, depression, loneliness, and life satisfaction of the participants.
Abstract: We translated the Short Boredom Proneness Scale (SBPS) into Chinese and tested its psychometric properties with 694 Chinese college students. Of the participants, 103 completed the reverse-worded Boredom Proneness Scale-Short Form, and 591 completed the Chinese version of the SBPS, the Multidimensional State Boredom Scale, the Self-Rating Depression Scale, the short version of the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) Loneliness Scale, and the Life Satisfaction Scale. We recalled 117 participants 4 weeks later and they completed the SBPS again. Factor analysis supported the 1-factor model of the SBPS, as well as the reverse-worded Boredom Proneness Scale-Short Form. Excellent internal consistency of the SBPS was obtained. Additionally, the results for the SBPS were significantly correlated with the state boredom, depression, loneliness, and life satisfaction of the participants. The results supported the cross-cultural consistency of the 1-factor model of boredom proneness, and showed that the Chinese version of the SBPS has excellent validity and reliability.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors examined the influence of job crafting, job satisfaction, and work engagement on employee turnover intention, and investigated the role of work engagement and job satisfaction as mediators in the relationship between job crafting and turnover intention.
Abstract: The aims in this study were to examine the influence of job crafting, job satisfaction, and work engagement on employee turnover intention, and to investigate the role of work engagement and job satisfaction as mediators in the relationship between job crafting and employee turnover intention. A validated questionnaire was used to collect data from 212 employees of a service company in China. The results of structural equation modeling showed that work engagement and job satisfaction partially mediated the job crafting–turnover intention relationship. These findings extended prior research and confirmed that job crafting, job satisfaction, and work engagement were each a predictor of employee turnover intention. These findings suggest that the turnover intention of employees could be reduced through generating job-crafting behaviors, and by improving job satisfaction and work engagement.

TL;DR: Zhang et al. as mentioned in this paper examined the relationships among psychological safety, employee voice, and work engagement and found that psychological safety would directly affect employees' engagement at work, and indirectly affect work engagement via employee voice.
Abstract: I examined the relationships among psychological safety, employee voice, and work engagement. Based on a literature review, I hypothesized that psychological safety would directly affect employees’ engagement at work, and indirectly affect work engagement via employee voice. A validated survey was used to collect data from 153 employees of a large manufacturing company in China. The results of structural equation modeling offered support for the full mediating role of employee voice in the psychological safety–work engagement relationship. Employees who perceived psychological safety were more likely to exhibit voice behavior; employee voice, in turn, promoted work engagement. These findings extend prior research and shed light on how employees’ psychological safety affects their work engagement. Discussion and implications of the results are presented.

TL;DR: This article explored the effect of brand trust on the relationship between brand image and customer loyalty and found that brand image was positively related to both cognitive and affective brand trust. But, they did not explore the relationship among brand image, brand trust and consumer loyalty.
Abstract: In this study we explored the effect of brand trust on the relationship between brand image and customer loyalty. We took Procter & Gamble as the target brand and developed and tested a theoretical model regarding the relationships among brand image, brand trust (i.e., cognitive and affective), and customer loyalty (i.e., repurchase and advocacy intention) using path analysis and bias-corrected bootstrapping. Empirical results of data from 283 consumers revealed that brand image was positively related to both cognitive and affective brand trust. Brand image was indirectly correlated with both repurchase and advocacy intention through cognitive brand trust, and brand image was indirectly related to advocacy intention through affective brand trust. These findings provide a basis for enterprise marketing management to enhance customer loyalty by shaping the brand image.

TL;DR: Wang et al. as mentioned in this paper conducted a cross-temporal meta-analysis involving 93 studies (117 data points, N = 87,503) to examine generational cohort changes in Chinese college students' depression levels from 2000 to 2017.
Abstract: University enrollment in China was expanded in 1999, with positive results. However, several psychological indicators of Chinese college students, such as increased anxiety across generational cohorts, have been revealed. To examine generational cohort changes in Chinese college students’ depression levels from 2000 to 2017, we conducted a cross-temporal meta-analysis involving 93 studies (117 data points, N = 87,503). The results showed that, according to responses to the Self-Rating Depression Scale, the depression level of Chinese college students increased by 6.04 points ( SD increase = 0.66). In addition, male (vs. female) college students demonstrated increased depression. Theoretical and practical implications are discussed.

TL;DR: In this paper, the mediating mechanism and boundary conditions through which proactive personality affects graduate students' innovative behavior were examined and management recommendations for ways to enhance and increase graduate students’ innovative behavior.
Abstract: A 2 time-point survey was used to examine the mediating mechanism and boundary conditions through which proactive personality affects graduate students' innovative behavior. Results revealed that a proactive personality positively affected the innovative behavior of the students; feedback seeking mediated the influence of proactive personality on innovative behavior, and academic self-efficacy moderated the relationship between proactive personality and innovative behavior through feedback seeking. Namely, when graduate students’ academic self-efficacy is high, for those with a proactive personality there is a stronger positive influence on their innovative behavior through feedback seeking. When graduate students’ academic self-efficacy is low, a proactive personality has a weaker positive impact on their innovative behavior through feedback seeking. In this study we have, therefore, established a new mediating mechanism and boundary conditions through which proactive personality influences innovative behavior and have expanded existing innovation theory. Finally, we proposed management recommendations for ways to enhance and increase graduate students’ innovative behavior.

TL;DR: Li et al. as discussed by the authors investigated empowering leadership as a predictor of employee innovative behavior, with work engagement as a mediator in this relationship, and found that empowering leadership was positively related to employee innovative behaviour and that work engagement partially mediated this relationship.
Abstract: We investigated empowering leadership as a predictor of employee innovative behavior, with work engagement as a mediator in this relationship. Data were collected from 318 employees and their supervisors in China, and we used structural equation modeling to evaluate our hypotheses. The results suggest that empowering leadership was positively related to employee innovative behavior, and that work engagement partially mediated this relationship. Our findings provide new insight into the effects of empowering leadership on employee innovation, and indicate that it is beneficial for leaders to pay attention to empowering behavior and, in doing so, consider employees’ engagement at work.

TL;DR: This paper examined the relationship between teacher online feedback (TOF) and learning motivation using structural equation modeling and bootstrap analysis, and found that the positive effect of TOF on learning motivation was partially mediated by learning engagement.
Abstract: Teacher online feedback (TOF) through online course delivery has been identified as key to promoting and validating knowledge in online learning environments. We examined the relationships between TOF, learning motivation, and learning engagement, and the mediating role of learning engagement in the relationship between TOF and learning motivation, using structural equation modeling and bootstrap analysis. Participants comprised 312 university students of College English courses in China. The results indicated that TOF was positively related to both learning motivation and learning engagement. Further, the positive effect of TOF on learning motivation was partially mediated by learning engagement. Theoretical implications and practical implications for language teachers’ implementation of TOF are discussed.

TL;DR: Wang et al. as discussed by the authors investigated the relationship between the service quality provided on a company's Weibo page and the two dimensions of customer value cocreation behavior, namely, participation and citizenship, as well as the moderating effect of collectivism on this relationship.
Abstract: The Weibo social media platform in China has an important role in the value-generation process between a company and a customer. We investigated the relationship between the service quality provided on a company’s Weibo page and the two dimensions of customer value cocreation behavior, namely, participation and citizenship, as well as the moderating effect of collectivism on this relationship. Participants were 354 active users of Weibo. Our findings confirmed that the service quality provided on a company’s Weibo page was critical to the generation of customer value cocreation behavior. Further, collectivism moderated this relationship, with higher levels of collectivism strengthening the Weibo page service quality and customer value cocreation behavior relationship. In addition, customer citizenship behavior was positively related to customer perceptions of brand image, whereas customer participation was not. Implications for companies in the Chinese context are discussed.

TL;DR: Li et al. as discussed by the authors explored the mediating effects of both self-transcendent meaning in life and spiritual selftranscendence in the relationship between dispositional awe and prosocial tendency.
Abstract: Dispositional awe is a self-transcendent experience that has been investigated in few empirical studies. We explored the mediating effects of both self-transcendent meaning in life and spiritual self-transcendence in the relationship between dispositional awe and prosocial tendency. Participants were 1,907 Chinese undergraduates. As predicted, self-transcendent meaning in life and spiritual self-transcendence mediated the relationship between dispositional awe and prosocial behavior. These findings not only demonstrate the mediating effect of self-transcendence on prosocial tendency, but also support dispositional awe as an element of self-transcendence.

TL;DR: The authors empirically investigated Chinese university faculty members' visiting experience and professional growth in American universities and found that despite challenges in preparation, language, and different academic cultures, Chinese visiting scholars were capable of navigating their host programs and achieving professional growth as they moved from peripheral to central participation in their academic community.
Abstract: We empirically investigated Chinese university faculty members’ visiting experience and professional growth in American universities. The major data source was qualitative semistructured interviews with 30 Chinese faculty members in the arts, engineering, natural sciences, and social sciences disciplines. The results showed that, despite challenges in preparation, language, and different academic cultures, Chinese visiting scholars were capable of navigating their host programs and achieving professional growth as they moved from peripheral to central participation in their academic community. We also critically discussed how Chinese visiting scholars’ academic experience in the United States can be improved, and cast light on the globalization of higher education.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors examined the relationship between entrepreneurs' social networks and opportunity identification, and the moderating roles of entrepreneurial passion and entrepreneurial alertness in this relationship, and found that the effect of entrepreneurs’ social ties on opportunity identification depends on the level of the individual's entrepreneurial passion.
Abstract: We examined the relationship between entrepreneurs’ social networks and opportunity identification, and the moderating roles of entrepreneurial passion and entrepreneurial alertness in this relationship. Results from 142 entrepreneurs supported the hypothesis that both their business ties and their political ties would be positively related to opportunity identification, and these relationships would be moderated by entrepreneurial passion and entrepreneurial alertness. Entrepreneurial passion weakened the relationship between business ties and opportunity identification, but amplified the relationship between political ties and opportunity identification. Further, entrepreneurial alertness strengthened the relationship between business ties and opportunity identification. The results suggest that the effect of entrepreneurs’ social ties on opportunity identification depends on the level of the individual’s entrepreneurial passion and entrepreneurial alertness.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors investigated the effect of sense of status on undergraduate students' international entrepreneurial intention as well as the possible influences of risk propensity and having a global mindset on this relationship.
Abstract: We investigated the effect of sense of status on undergraduate students’ international entrepreneurial intention as well as the possible influences of risk propensity and having a global mindset on this relationship. Data were collected by surveying 265 students at 19 universities in Eastern China. As hypothesized, sense of status was positively related to the students’ international entrepreneurial intention, and this relationship was mediated by risk propensity. Further, having a global mindset moderated the mediating effect of risk propensity on the relationship between sense of status and international entrepreneurial intention. This study demonstrates the value to international business study of examining the previously neglected association between sense of status and international entrepreneurial intention among undergraduates in China, as well as how risk propensity may influence international entrepreneurial intention.

TL;DR: Wang et al. as mentioned in this paper conducted a survey with 608 Chinese college students to investigate the mediating and moderating effects of emotional resilience in the relationship between negative life events and mood state.
Abstract: We conducted a survey with 608 Chinese college students to investigate the mediating and moderating effects of emotional resilience in the relationship between negative life events and mood state. Researchers have previously examined either the moderating or mediating effect of emotional resilience in this relationship, and there has been disagreement about whether emotional resilience is idiosyncratic or state-driven. Our results showed that college students’ level of emotional resilience and mood state were significant predictors for the effect of negative life events; emotional resilience had a significant positive effect on college students’ mood state, and emotional resilience had a significant mediating and moderating effect in the relationship of negative life events and college students’ mood state. These findings not only further support the theory that emotional resilience is state-driven, but also highlight the important role of emotional resilience in maintaining the emotional health of college students.

TL;DR: Zhang et al. as mentioned in this paper examined the impact of social media use on employee innovative performance and the psychological mechanism underlying this relationship, and found that both social media usage and work engagement were significantly correlated with innovative performance.
Abstract: We examined the impact of social media use on employee innovative performance, and the psychological mechanism underlying this relationship. Our hypothesis was that social media use would have a positive influence on employee innovative performance and that work engagement would act as a mediator in this relationship. We employed structural equation modeling to investigate this mediating role with 298 employees of a large enterprise in China. Results of a time-lagged survey showed that both social media use and work engagement were significantly correlated with innovative performance, and work engagement partially mediated the social media use–innovative performance relationship. These findings shed light on how social media use affects employee innovative performance. Theoretical and practical implications and directions for future research are discussed.

TL;DR: In this paper, an e-tail service recovery research framework was built to explore the effect of online service recovery on post-recovery customer satisfaction and loyalty after service failure and investigated the mediating role of customer perceived distributive justice in the relationship between service recovery and recovery effects.
Abstract: We built an e-tailing service recovery research framework to explore the effect of online service recovery on postrecovery customer satisfaction and loyalty after service failure. We also investigated the mediating role of customer perceived distributive justice in the relationship between service recovery and recovery effects. We conducted a survey with 330 undergraduate students in Beijing. The results showed that both psychological and tangible recovery were significantly related to customer perceived distributive justice. Psychological recovery and distributive justice also positively influenced postrecovery customer satisfaction. The positive impact of tangible recovery on postrecovery satisfaction was not significant. Psychological and tangible recovery and distributive justice all positively affected customer loyalty. The mediating role of distributive justice in the relationship between online service recovery and recovery effects was also confirmed. These findings show that e-tailers should pay more attention to both psychological and tangible recovery after service failure to retain customer satisfaction and loyalty.

TL;DR: This paper found that the perceived motivation of a donor's prosocial behavior is inferred by observers not only from the behavior itself but also from whether or not the behavior is a product of nudging.
Abstract: We proposed that although nudging may encourage participation, being nudged may undermine the intrinsic motivation of a donor’s prosocial behavior in the eyes of an observer. In 3 studies spanning various contexts of prosocial nudging ( N s = 198, 141, and 267 university students, respectively), we demonstrated that observers perceived a donor who was (vs. was not) nudged as less intrinsically motivated to help others. The findings suggested that the perceived motive of a donor’s prosocial behavior is inferred by observers not only from the behavior itself but also from whether or not the behavior is a product of nudging. By investigating the consequences of nudging from the observer’s perspective, we have provided a new lens for understanding the role of nudging in the prosocial domain.

TL;DR: Li et al. as discussed by the authors utilized social exchange theory to examine the effects that supervisor developmental feedback has on employee loyalty toward the supervisor and found that trust was positively associated with employee loyalty towards the supervisor.
Abstract: We utilized social exchange theory to examine the effects that supervisor developmental feedback has on employee loyalty toward the supervisor. The 337 participants for our study were recruited from a large manufacturing enterprise in Hunan, China. Using hierarchical linear regression analysis, we found that supervisor developmental feedback was positively related to both trust in, and employee loyalty toward, the supervisor. Trust was not only positively associated with employee loyalty toward the supervisor but also partially mediated the relationship between supervisor developmental feedback and employee loyalty toward the supervisor. Further, interactional justice moderated the positive relationship between supervisor developmental feedback and employee trust of the supervisor, such that the strength of this relationship was enhanced as interactional justice increased. Managerial implications and directions for further research are discussed.

TL;DR: Wang et al. as mentioned in this paper explored the psychological factors that affect abstinence motivation among 732 male drug addicts in China and found significantly positive correlations among self-concept, coping style, and abstinence motivation.
Abstract: Abstinence motivation is an important psychological factor in staving off a relapse in synthetic drug addiction. We explored the psychological factors that affect abstinence motivation among 732 male drug addicts in China. Participants answered a survey comprising the Tennessee Self-Concept Scale, the Stress Coping Style Questionnaire, and the Drug Abstinence Motivation Scale. Results show significantly positive correlations among self-concept, coping style, and abstinence motivation. Coping style played a mediating role between self-concept and abstinence motivation, that is, self-concept affects abstinence motivation by influencing the coping style. Results have practical implications for substance abuse treatment in Mainland China by illustrating a focus on the fostering of a positive self-concept and coping style in the face of stress to enhance abstinence motivation and reduce the relapse rate.

TL;DR: Wang et al. as mentioned in this paper examined the correlations between personality and career decision-making self-efficacy (CDMSE) of university students from poor rural areas in China from an educational equity perspective.
Abstract: We examined the correlations between personality and career decision-making self-efficacy (CDMSE) of university students from poor rural areas in China from an educational equity perspective. The results showed that female (vs. male) students were more neurotic, senior (vs. younger) students were more agreeable, and social science students were more neurotic than those in other disciplines. The results also revealed that differences in the total CDMSE were nonsignificant, but there was a gender difference in accurate self-appraisal and a difference by year of study in gathering information. There was a positive correlation between conscientiousness, agreeableness, openness, and extraversion, and CDMSE, and a negative correlation between neuroticism and CDMSE. The 5 personality traits, except for agreeableness, played a crucial role in predicting CDMSE. The results suggest that officials and staff of governments, universities, and industries should work together to develop proactive personality traits of students from poor rural areas in China, facilitate their CDMSE, and help them achieve their employment aspirations, thereby promoting educational equity.

TL;DR: The authors investigated how social media use in study contexts is related to students' engagement and creativity, and they found that student engagement partially mediated the relationship between social media usage and student creativity.
Abstract: Fostering student creativity is widely accepted as an important goal in Chinese higher education, and social media is now integrated into students’ everyday lives. I investigated how social media use in study contexts is related to students’ engagement and creativity. A validated questionnaire was used to collect data from 652 undergraduate students at 3 Chinese public universities. Structural equation modeling results show that social media use in study contexts was related to student engagement and creativity, and that student engagement partially mediated the relationship between social media use and student creativity. This provides insight into how to promote student creativity. Theoretical and practical implications of the results are presented, and future directions for research are discussed.

TL;DR: In this article, structural equation modeling is employed to explore how sales ethics, corporate social responsibility, trust, and attitude influence customers' loyalty in the real estate brokerage industry, and the empirical results show that the greater the degree of recognition that customers have of the industry's sales ethics and the more they acknowledge the company's corporate responsibility, the more people trust the industry.
Abstract: We employed structural equation modeling to explore how sales ethics, corporate social responsibility, trust, and attitude influence customers’ loyalty in the real estate brokerage industry. Participants were 466 real estate brokerage customers in Kaohsiung, Taiwan. The empirical results show that the greater the degree of recognition that customers have of the industry’s sales ethics, the more they acknowledge the industry’s corporate social responsibility and the more they trust the industry. Moreover, a stronger customer perception of the industry attitude had a significant positive influence on loyalty, such that trust had an indirect effect on loyalty through the mediator of attitude. This implies that sales ethics and corporate social responsibility are integral factors that influence customers’ loyalty in the real estate brokerage industry.

TL;DR: The authors investigated the mediating effects of positive affect and strengths use in the relationship between perceived organizational support for strengths use (POSSU) and employees' task performance, and found that POSSU was positively related to task performance and that this relationship was mediated by strengths use.
Abstract: We investigated the mediating effects of positive affect and strengths use in the relationship between perceived organizational support for strengths use (POSSU) and employees’ task performance. Data were gathered at 2 time points, separated by a 2-week interval, from 157 employees working in various Chinese enterprises. We applied structural equation modeling and PROCESS macro analysis to the data. The results indicate that POSSU was positively related to task performance and that this relationship was mediated by strengths use. In addition, positive affect and strengths use played a sequential mediating role in the relationship between POSSU and task performance. However, positive affect was not a significant mediator in the POSSU–task performance relationship. Theoretical and managerial implications are discussed in the context of the literature on POSSU and task performance.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors investigated how the personality trait of openness to experience affects employee creativity and found that it positively correlates with creativity and negatively correlates with decision autonomy and task interdependence.
Abstract: There is considerable ambiguity about how the personality trait of openness to experience affects employee creativity. We investigated how the interactions of openness to experience with decision autonomy, and with task interdependence can influence employee creativity. Analysis of matched data from 217 supervisor–employee dyads showed a direct influence of openness of experience and the decision autonomy and task interdependence job characteristics on employee creativity. Furthermore, we examined the moderating roles of decision autonomy and task interdependence in the effect of openness to experience on employee creativity, and found that openness to experience was positively related to employee creativity and task interdependence was negatively related to employee creativity. Further, decision autonomy positively moderated the relationship between openness to experience and employee creativity, whereas the interaction between task interdependence and openness to experience did not have a significant impact on employee creativity. Theoretical and practical implications are discussed.

TL;DR: Zhang et al. as mentioned in this paper used social identity theory to examine the relationship between HPWS and employee outcomes, and highlighted the importance of considering the implementation of HPWS practices to strengthen employees' identification with the organization and improve their performance.
Abstract: Although research on high-performance work systems (HPWS) is increasing, there are few studies in which the focus is on whether and how firm-level HPWS affect individual-level employee outcomes. Using social identity theory, we examined the relationship between HPWS and employee outcomes, and the role organizational identification plays as a mediator in this relationship. We used a multilevel research design and collected data at the organizational and individual levels from a sample of 485 employees of 32 companies in Guangdong Province, China. We used Amos 17.0 and hierarchical linear modeling 6.08 software to examine our hypotheses and the theoretical model. Results showed that organizational identification fully mediated the relationship between HPWS and employees’ job performance as well as that between HPWS and their turnover intention. Our findings provide new insights into the relationship between firm-level human resource management and individual-level employee outcomes, and highlight the importance of considering the implementation of HPWS practices to strengthen employees’ identification with the organization and improve their performance.

TL;DR: In this paper, mood-as-information theory was applied to investigate the effect of negative mood on prohibitive and promotive employee voice, and the moderating role of transformational and transactional leadership styles in this relationship.
Abstract: We applied mood-as-information theory to investigate the effect of negative mood on prohibitive and promotive employee voice, and the moderating role of transformational and transactional leadership styles in this relationship. We recruited a paired employee–supervisor sample, comprising 48 supervisors who rated their employees’ promotive and prohibitive voice, and 224 employees who completed measures of negative affect and their supervisors’ transformational and transactional leadership. Our results showed that negative mood enhanced prohibitive voice but reduced promotive voice. Further, transformational leadership weakened the effect of negative mood on voice, whereas transactional leadership reinforced this effect. The research results provide a solid theoretical basis for managers to manage their negative mood by changing their leadership behavior, and provide a new perspective for leaders to develop employee management strategies, and develop an objective and impartial evaluation system based on the intuitive external behaviors of employees.
