Origami folding: A Structural Engineering Approach
Mark Schenk,Simon D. Guest +1 more
TL;DR: A novel engineering application of Origami is presented, using it for both the exibility and the rigidity the folding patterns provide, and the use of established structural engineering methods to gain insight into the kinematics of the folded sheet.
Journal ArticleDOI
Energy Absorption of Thin-Walled Square Tubes With a Prefolded Origami Pattern—Part I: Geometry and Numerical Simulation
Jiayao Ma,Zhong You +1 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors presented a novel thin-walled energy absorption device known as the origami crash box, which is made from a thinwalled tube of square cross section whose surface is prefolded according to a developable origami pattern.
Journal ArticleDOI
Experimental study on crashworthiness of empty/aluminum foam/honeycomb-filled CFRP tubes
TL;DR: In this article, the authors compared the crashworthiness of empty circular CFRP (Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastics) with CFRP/aluminum/steel tubes filled with aluminum foam or aluminum honeycomb under axial quasi-static crushing.
Journal ArticleDOI
The Energy-Absorbing Characteristics of Tubular Structures With Geometric and Material Modifications: An Overview
S. Chung Kim Yuen,G.N. Nurick +1 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the axial response of tubular sections with imperfections and fillers subjected to axial impact loads relevant to the field of structural crashworthiness is reviewed. And the types of imperfections discussed include prebuckle, parallel and dished indentations, cutouts, stiffeners, fillers, and wrapping.
Journal ArticleDOI
Crashworthiness design for bio-inspired multi-cell tubes with quadrilateral, hexagonal and octagonal sections
TL;DR: In this paper, a group of bionic multi-cell tubes (BMCTs) with quadrilateral, hexagonal and octagonal sections were proposed, and the results showed that the sixth type of BMCT with octagonal section (O-BMCT-6) has the best crashing performance.

Dynamic progressive buckling of circular and square tubes
W. Abramowicz,Norman Jones +1 more
TL;DR: In this paper, a series of over 120 axial crushing tests were conducted on circular and square steel tubes loaded either statically or dynamically, and approximate theoretical predictions for static and dynamic progressive buckling were developed.
Journal ArticleDOI
Dynamic axial crushing of circular tubes
W. Abramowicz,Norman Jones +1 more
TL;DR: A series of axial crushing tests on steel circular cylindrical shells loaded either statically or dynamically is reported and compared with various theoretical predictions and empirical relations in this article, where a modified version of Alexander's theoretical analysis for axisymmetric, or concertina, deformations gives good agreement with the experimental results when the effective crushing distance is considered and provided that the influence of material strain rate sensitivity is retained in the dynamic crushing case.
Journal ArticleDOI
Quasi-static axial compression of thin-walled circular aluminium tubes
TL;DR: In this article, a total of 70 quasi-static tests were conducted on circular 6060 aluminium tubes in the T5, as-received condition and the average crush force, FAV, was non-dimensionalised and an empirical formula established as FAV/MP=72.3(D/t)0.32.

Aircraft landing gear design principles and practices
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors provide a link in landing gear technology from historical practices to modern design trends, also considering the necessary airfield interface with gear design, and lead students and engineers from the initial concepts of landing gear design through to the final detail design.
Journal ArticleDOI
Alexander revisited—A two folding elements model of progressive crushing of tubes
TL;DR: In this paper, a new model of the progressive crushing of circular tubes was developed in which an active zone of plastic deformations contains two folds or buckles, and closed-form solutions were derived for the length of the plastic folding wave and the mean crushing force.
