TLDR
Two fuzzy versions of the k-means optimal, least squared error partitioning problem are formulated for finite subsets X of a general inner product space; in both cases, the extremizing solutions are shown to be fixed points of a certain operator T on the class of fuzzy, k-partitions of X, and simple iteration of T provides an algorithm which has the descent property relative to the least squarederror criterion function.
Abstract
Two fuzzy versions of the k-means optimal, least squared error partitioning problem are formulated for finite subsets X of a general inner product space. In both cases, the extremizing solutions are shown to be fixed points of a certain operator T on the class of fuzzy, k-partitions of X, and simple iteration of T provides an algorithm which has the descent property relative to the least squared error criterion function. In the first case, the range of T consists largely of ordinary (i.e. non-fuzzy) partitions of X and the associated iteration scheme is essentially the well known ISODATA process of Ball and Hall. However, in the second case, the range of T consists mainly of fuzzy partitions and the associated algorithm is new; when X consists of k compact well separated (CWS) clusters, Xi , this algorithm generates a limiting partition with membership functions which closely approximate the characteristic functions of the clusters Xi . However, when X is not the union of k CWS clusters, the limi...

Statistical power for cluster analysis

TL;DR: A simulation approach to estimate power and classification accuracy for popular analysis pipelines found that clustering outcomes were driven by large effect sizes or the accumulation of many smaller effects across features, and were mostly unaffected by differences in covariance structure.

A tabu search-based algorithm for the fuzzy clustering problem

TL;DR: This paper proposes a new approach to this problem which is based on tabu search technique, and aims at finding a global solution of FCP, and compares the performance of the algorithm with the fuzzy C-means algorithm.

Fuzzy Clusterwise Generalized Structured Component Analysis

TL;DR: This paper generalized GSCA to a fuzzy clustering framework so as to account for potential group-level respondent heterogeneity, and an alternating least-squares procedure is developed and technically described for parameter estimation.

Median evidential c-means algorithm and its application to community detection

TL;DR: A new prototype-based clustering method, called Median Evidential C-Means (MECM), which is an extension of median c-means and median fuzzy c- means on the theoretical framework of belief functions is proposed, which could be applied to graph clustering problems.

Crouch gait patterns defined using k-means cluster analysis are related to underlying clinical pathology

TL;DR: A new classification tool can be used to define homogeneous groups of subjects in crouch gait, which can help guide treatment decisions and outcomes assessment.
