TLDR
Two fuzzy versions of the k-means optimal, least squared error partitioning problem are formulated for finite subsets X of a general inner product space; in both cases, the extremizing solutions are shown to be fixed points of a certain operator T on the class of fuzzy, k-partitions of X, and simple iteration of T provides an algorithm which has the descent property relative to the least squarederror criterion function.
Abstract
Two fuzzy versions of the k-means optimal, least squared error partitioning problem are formulated for finite subsets X of a general inner product space. In both cases, the extremizing solutions are shown to be fixed points of a certain operator T on the class of fuzzy, k-partitions of X, and simple iteration of T provides an algorithm which has the descent property relative to the least squared error criterion function. In the first case, the range of T consists largely of ordinary (i.e. non-fuzzy) partitions of X and the associated iteration scheme is essentially the well known ISODATA process of Ball and Hall. However, in the second case, the range of T consists mainly of fuzzy partitions and the associated algorithm is new; when X consists of k compact well separated (CWS) clusters, Xi , this algorithm generates a limiting partition with membership functions which closely approximate the characteristic functions of the clusters Xi . However, when X is not the union of k CWS clusters, the limi...

Learning predictive clustering rules

TL;DR: In this article, the authors extend predictive clustering toward rules, where each cluster is described by a rule and different clusters are allowed to overlap since the sets of examples covered by different rules do not need to be disjoint.

Delineation of river bed-surface patches by clustering high-resolution spatial grain size data

TL;DR: Investigating methods of patch delineation in which clustering analysis is applied to a high-resolution grid of spatial grain-size distributions (GSDs) collected during a flume experiment finds all clustering methods produced better-separated patch GSDs than the visually-delineated patches.

Impact of urbanization on nonstationarity of annual and seasonal precipitation extremes in China.

TL;DR: Wang et al. as discussed by the authors examined the influence of urbanization on nonstationarity of annual and seasonal precipitation extremes in China, using daily precipitation data from 1857 stations for 1961-2014, and NCAR/NCEP and ERA-Interim reanalysis datasets.

A hybrid model for bankruptcy prediction using genetic algorithm, fuzzy c-means and mars

TL;DR: In this paper, a hybrid model using Fuzzy C-means clustering and MARS, which uses static ratios taken from the bank financial statements for prediction, has its own theoretical advantages.

Clustering Files of Chemical Structures Using the Fuzzy k-Means Clustering Method

TL;DR: Clustering of several small sets of agrochemical compounds demonstrate the ability of the fuzzy k-means method to highlight multicluster membership and to identify outlier compounds, although the former can be difficult to interpret in some cases.
