TLDR
In this article, a refined extreme value analysis for three physical phenomena which are leading to high gust wind speeds is presented, i.e., typical storms induced by strong frontal depressions, thunderstorms and additional gust fronts especially in weaker frontal depressions which are induced by down-drafts of cold air and/or by rain and which are not fully covered by the usual flow field models.

A model for the estimation of storm losses and the identification of severe winter storms in Germany

TL;DR: In this paper, a storm loss model for Germany is presented, which is based on the excess of (scaled) wind speed over the upper 2% quantile, and on population numbers in individual districts within Germany, with the latter serving as a proxy for the spatial distribution of values that could be affected by a storm.

ESPON Climate Climate Change and Territorial Effects on Regions and Local Economies

TL;DR: The web site of ESPON as mentioned in this paper provides the possibility to download and examine the most recent documents produced by finalised and ongoing ESPON projects, as well as a basic report exists only in an electronic version.
Journal ArticleDOI

Separation and classification of extreme wind events from anemometric records

TL;DR: In this article, the authors deal with the management of large sets of wind velocity data, in order to separate and classify independent extreme wind events through a semi-automated procedure involving a suitable mix of systematic quantitative controls and specific qualitative judgments.

A web-based GIS platform for the safe management and risk assessment of complex structural and infrastructural systems exposed to wind

TL;DR: An integrated web-based GIS platform for the safe management and risk assessment of complex port areas exposed to intense wind actions is developed, suitable for applications to any port reality worldwide and, even more, to any complex structural and infrastructural system under wind actions.

Unbiased plotting positions — A review

C. Cunnane
- 01 May 1978 -
TL;DR: In this article, it is shown that a worthwhile criterion can be based on desired statistical properties of the plot, rather than on comparison of plotting positions with estimates of probability for individual sample values.

Extreme Wind Distribution Tails: A “Peaks over Threshold” Approach

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors use the de Haan method to determine whether the reverse Weibull distribution is an appropriate extreme wind speed model by performing statistical analyses based on the "peaks over threshold" approach.
Journal ArticleDOI

Application of the generalized Pareto distribution to extreme value analysis in wind engineering

TL;DR: In this article, the generalized Pareto distribution (GPD) is applied to the statistical analysis of extreme wind speeds and its main advantage is that it makes use of all relevant data on the high wind gusts produced by the storms of interest, not just the annual maxima.
Journal ArticleDOI

Extreme wind speeds in mixed wind climates

TL;DR: In this paper, a technique is discussed which enables extreme wind speed probabilities in mixed wind climates to be determined, and it is shown that in such wind climates the method is likely to yield more accurate probability estimates than the traditional Gumbel analysis of annual wind speed maxima, particularly for annual probabilities of less than 2%.
Journal ArticleDOI

Climate change and design wind load concepts

TL;DR: In this paper, the effects of a possible climate change have been discussed in regard to wind loading on buildings and structures, based on meteorological observations of a weather station in Germany, the existence of longterm trends and their statistical significance is investigated.
