In this paper, a polarization-controlled free-space photonic switch based on a PI-LOSS switch was proposed, which has similar insertion loss and lower crosstalk compared to the conventional crossbar switch.
Abstract
We propose a polarization-controlled free-space photonic switch based on a PI-LOSS switch that has similar insertion loss and lower crosstalk compared to the conventional crossbar switch. We describe a multistage switching network with cross-connected PI-LOSS switch modules that is easier to control and smaller than other strictly nonblocking switch structures. >

Silica-based planar lightwave circuits: passive and thermally active devices

TL;DR: In this paper, an outline of planar lightwave circuits (PLCs) focusing on passive devices such as arrayed waveguide grating multiplexers is presented. But the authors do not discuss the role of PLCs in both optical dense wavelength-division multiplexing networks and optical access networks.

32 × 32 silicon electro-optic switch with built-in monitors and balanced-status units.

TL;DR: To construct large-scale silicon electro-optical switches for optical interconnections, a method using a limited number of power monitors inserted at certain positions to detect and determine the optimum operating points of all switch units to eliminate non-uniform effects arising from fabrication errors was developed.

Low-loss and high-extinction-ratio silica-based strictly nonblocking 16/spl times/16 thermooptic matrix switch

TL;DR: In this article, a low-loss and high-extinction-ratio silica-based 16/spl times/16 thermooptic matrix switch is demonstrated, which employs a double Mach-Zehnder interferometer switching unit and a matrix arrangement which reduces the total waveguide length.
