In this paper, a different molecular arrangement in the bilayers of the smectic Ad phase of mesogenic carbohydrate amphiphiles was proposed, which is consistent with all experimental data currently available.
Abstract
We propose a different molecular arrangement in the bilayers of the smectic Ad phase of mesogenic Carbohydrate amphiphiles from that previously postulated. The molecular arrangement proposed in this report is consistent with all experimental data currently available. In this new model, the smectic bilayers are identical (except for the absence of water) to the fluid lamellar (Lα) lyotropic phase, i.e., the molecules within the bilayers are arranged tail-to-tail, with the carbohydrate moieties on the outside of the bilaycrs and partially interdigitized alkyl chains in the core of each layer.

Supramolecular hydrogen-bonded liquid crystals

TL;DR: The role of hydrogen-bonding interactions in the formation and/or stabilization of liquid crystalline phases has been recognized in recent years and significant work has been conducted as discussed by the authors, with the aim of establishing, in the first place, the diversity of organic compounds that can be used as building elements in the process of liquid crystal formation.

Carbohydrate liquid crystals

TL;DR: There has been a marked increase during the past 5 years in the number of mesogenic compounds synthesized from the common, naturally occurring carbohydrates, particularly from glucose and glucitol as discussed by the authors.

Thermotrop flüssigkristalline Kohlenhydrat‐Amphiphile

TL;DR: In this paper, an advanced report related to the reviews of Jeffrey on thermotropic mesogens based on carbohydrate amphiphiles is given, where different influences being responsible for the formation, stabilization, and for the type of the mesophases, such as the hydrogen bond network, the van der Waals interactions of the lipophilic chains, the regio-and stereochemical arrangements, and molecular geometry are discussed more in detail.

Liquid Crystal Phases Exhibited by Some Monosaccharides

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors defined the phase as smectic A with a bilayer structuring and found that the phase was immiscible with the A phases of conventional smectogens because the hydrogen bonding necessary for phase formation is disrupted in binary mixtures.

Studies on liquid-crystalline glycosides

TL;DR: In this article, a number of α- and β-glycosides with long chain aliphatic alcohols as aglycones were prepared, and the liquid-crystalline properties of the various mono-, di, and trisaccharide series compared.
