Abstract
The existing techniques for the detection and location of incipient faults (e.g. electrical trees) in extruded shielded power cables are reviewed. Only the techniques developed for field applications are included. The advantages and disadvantages of each technique are evaluated from the point of view of a power engineer. The desired features of an ideal incipient fault detection and location system are identified. Guided by these features, directions for future research in this area are suggested. The authors discuss partial discharge measurement and time-domain reflectometry. >

Detection of Incipient Faults in Distribution Underground Cables

TL;DR: In this article, two wavelet-based algorithms are proposed to detect and classify the incipient faults in underground cables at the distribution voltage levels, based on the methodology of wavelet analysis and the analysis of the superimposed fault current and negative sequence current in the time domain.

Cable fault detection

TL;DR: In this article, a cable fault detection component (168) receives input data indicative of a fault in an electrical power system and analyzes the input data to determine if the fault is indicative of self-clearing cable fault and generates corresponding output data.

Detecting Incipient Faults via Numerical Modeling and Statistical Change Detection

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors deal with the detection of incipient faults in underground distribution systems using online voltage and current measurements using the self-organizing map technology, based on the numerical modeling of the incipient fault patterns established from the oscillographic data.

Incipient Faults Monitoring in Underground Medium Voltage Cables of Distribution Systems Based on a Two-Step Strategy

TL;DR: A precise approach based on CUmulative SUM and ADAptive LInear NEuron has been proposed and has a strong capability in distinguishing the cable incipient faults from other similar conditions in distribution systems.

System and device for detecting defects in underground cables

TL;DR: In this paper, a system and device for detecting insulation defects in a cable is described, which is based on detecting partial discharge from insulation defects and reporting the detection when it occurs.

Fundamental Limitations in the Measurement of Corona and Partial Discharge

TL;DR: In this article, the theoretical sensitivity of conventional partial discharge detectors is compared with that obtained from ultra wideband (UWB) (up to l GHz) detection systems, and the comparison indicates that for relatively lossfree distributed systems, such as SF6 insulated bus, the UWB system is up to two orders of magnitude more sensitive.

Location and characterization of partial discharge sites in shielded power cables

TL;DR: In this paper, an instrument capable of detecting and locating partial discharge sites and faults in shielded power cables was developed on behalf of a group of US electric utilities, using state-of-the-art electronic hardware and advanced digital signal processing techniques.

Development of a new type insulation diagnostic method for hot-line XLPE cables

TL;DR: In this article, the authors developed an insulation diagnostic system that makes automatic measurements of the dielectric dissipation factor and DC component in a hot-line XLPE (cross-linked polyethylene) insulated power cable and makes an overall judgement of cable insulation deterioration.

Instrumentation for the Detection and Locatiion of Incipient Faults on Power Cables

TL;DR: In this article, an instrumentation was developed for the detection and location of incipient faults in power cables by the processing of the electromagnetic noise that appears at the power cable terminals, which involves a correlation technique, the implementation of the concept in the form of a microprocessor controlled, polarity coincidence type of correlator is described.

A New Method for Detection and Location of Distributed Partial Discharges (Cable Faults) in High Voltage Cables Under External Interference

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors proposed a new electronic PD detection and location method of high sensitivity and accuracy, which allows the recording and evaluation of partial discharges in HV cables even under the influence of external interference.
