A technique for optimizing sample size (replication)

TLDR
A method is proposed which incorporates resolving power as a primary factor and expended effort (feasibility) as a secondary factor and the greatest limiting factor on sample size is used as a measure of sample effort.

Habitat characteristics affecting fish assemblages on a Hawaiian coral reef

TL;DR: Multiple linear regression models indicated that for the complete assemblages and for most trophic and mobility guilds, a large part of the variability was explained by measures of holes in the substratum, with important contributions from measured substratum rugosity and depth.
Journal ArticleDOI

Estimating densities of small fishes and decapod crustaceans in Shallow estuarine habitats : A review of sampling design with focus on gear selection

TL;DR: This work recommends using enclosure samplers for estimating densities of small nekton in shallow estuarine habitats because theseSamplers provide the most reliable quantitative data, and the results of studies using these Samplers should be comparable.
Journal ArticleDOI

Determining methods of underwater visual census for estimating the abundance of coral reef fishes

TL;DR: It is suggested that fish mobility and search efficiency are key factors in optimising UVC methods, and the importance of carefully defining the behavioural attributes of species prior to selecting a UVC method is discussed.
Journal ArticleDOI

Quantitative video sampling of coral reef benthos: large-scale application

TL;DR: The feasibility of reliably estimating percent cover of coral reef benthos by video techniques is examined in this article, where video belt transects were recorded within study areas on Davies and John Brewer Reefs in the central Great Barrier Reef during September 1988.

Principles and Procedures of Statistics: A Biometrical Approach

TL;DR: Observations probability sampling from a normal distribution comparisons involving two sample means principles of experimental design analysis of variance.
Journal ArticleDOI

Bootstrap Methods: Another Look at the Jackknife

TL;DR: In this article, the authors discuss the problem of estimating the sampling distribution of a pre-specified random variable R(X, F) on the basis of the observed data x.

Sampling Design and Statistical Methods for Environmental Biologists

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors present an approach for optimal impact study design, based on the concept of simple variables, derived from simple variables, and biological variables in special areas, with the goal of determining when and where the impact should be inferred from spatial patterns alone.
Journal ArticleDOI

The Future of Data Analysis

TL;DR: For a long time I have thought I was a statistician, interested in inferences from the particular to the general as mentioned in this paper. But as I have watched mathematical statistics evolve, I have had cause to wonder and to doubt.
