Abstract
Many economic researchers have attempted to measure the effect of aggregate market or public policy variables on micro units by merging aggregate data with micro observations by industry, occupation, or geographical location, then using multiple regression or similar statistical models to measure the effect of the aggregate variable on the micro units. The methods are usually based upon the assumption of independent disturbances, which is typically not appropriate for data from populations with grouped structure. Incorrectly using ordinary least squares can lead to standard errors that are seriously biased downward. This note illustrates the danger of spurious regression from this kind of misspecification, using as an example a wage regression estimated on data for individual workers that includes in the specification aggregate regressors for characteristics of geographical states. Reversing the Question: Does Happiness Affect Consumption and Savings Behavior?

TL;DR: This paper examined the impact of happiness on consumption and savings behavior using data from the DNB Household Survey from the Netherlands and the German Socio-economic Panel and found that happier people save more, spend less, and have a lower marginal propensity to consume.

FDI and credit constraints: firm level evidence from China

TL;DR: In this article, the authors assess the success of the ongoing financial system reforms in China by investigating the extent to which firms are financially constrained, and analyze whether incoming foreign investment in China plays an important role in alleviating domestic firms' credit constraints.

Court Politics: The Political Economy of Tort Awards

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors investigate the forces that explain why trial awards differ across the United States and find that defendants are often out-of-state nonvoters while plaintiffs are typically in-state voters.

Imports, Productivity Growth, and Supply Chain Learning

TL;DR: The authors showed that firms in industries supplying increasingly import-intensive sectors have higher productivity growth than other firms, suggesting that linkages through vertical supply relationships are the channel through which import-driven technology transfer occurs.

An empirical evaluation of the determinants of research joint venture formation

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors empirically analyzed the determinants of firm participation in Research Joint Ventures (RJVs) and found that sectorial R&D intensity, industry concentration, firm size, technological spillovers, and past RJV participation positively influence the probability of forming RJVs.

TL;DR: The emphasis is on simplification whenever possible, assuming the readers know college algebra and basic calculus, and Jan Kmenta explains all methods within the simplest framework, and generalizations are presented as logical extensions of simple cases.

Maximum Likelihood Approaches to Variance Component Estimation and to Related Problems

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors proposed a restricted maximum likelihood (reml) approach which takes into account the loss in degrees of freedom resulting from estimating fixed effects, and developed a satisfactory asymptotic theory for estimators of variance components.

Random group effects and the precision of regression estimates

TL;DR: The authors analyzes several empirical examples to investigate the applicability of random effects models and the consequences of inappropriately using ordinary least squares (OLS) estimation in the presence of random group effects.
