A novel form of imaging steel reinforcing components in concrete is described which employs a scanning inductive sensor. A host computer, linked to the scanning and data acquisition system, generates grey-scale images whose intensities are proportional to the signal strengths produced by the sensor. Simple signal subtraction algorithms have been employed to achieve considerable improvements in image contrast, spatial resolution and the extraction of dimensional information. Models of the sensor response suggest that with further signal manipulation, detailed quantitative measurements on image features will also be possible.read more

A portable inductive scanning system for imaging steel-reinforcing bars embedded within concrete
TL;DR: In this article, a portable scanning system and inductive sensor that produces images of steel-reinforcing bars embedded within concrete by an inductive principle is described, which includes a field-compensated receiving coil, detects the magnetic field generated by the steel bars due to eddy currents induced on their surfaces by an excitation coil.

Detection and imaging of surface corrosion on steel reinforcing bars using a phase-sensitive inductive sensor intended for use with concrete
TL;DR: In this article, a new inductive sensor is described that exploits the principle of frequency shift and phase sensitive detection to identify and image corrosion on the surface of steel reinforcing bars intended for embedment within concrete.

A combined Q and heterodyne sensor incorporating real-time DSP for reinforcement imaging, corrosion detection and material characterisation
TL;DR: In this paper, an inductive sensor is described that is used to image steel reinforcement bars in concrete and to visualise surface corrosion, and the measured parameters are ultimately expressed as voltages before being applied to a purpose-designed DSP system.

Three-dimensional image rendering of steel reinforcing bars using curvilinear models applied to orthogonal line scans taken by an inductive sensor
TL;DR: In this article, a technique is described that enables virtual reconstruction of three-dimensional images of steel reinforcing bars embedded within concrete, based on the systematic characterization of an inductive sensor response, using appropriate curvilinear models; this characterization is then applied to real, 2D scan data.

Why america's bridges are crumbling
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors examine the reasons behind bridge failure and discuss ways in which the process of bridge inspection has improved and take a look at various bridge maintenance processes and why they do or do not work.

The propagation and attenuation of medium-frequency ultrasonic waves in concrete: a signal analytical approach
TL;DR: In this article, the authors described the manner in which medium-frequency ultrasonic pulses travelling through concrete are generated, received, digitized and analyzed by partitioning the signal into discrete windows in the time domain, corresponding to the emergence of individual wave phenomena within the medium.

Apodized pickup coils for improved spatial resolution of SQUID magnetometers
Bradley J. Roth,John P. Wikswo +1 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors show that the quality of a current image can be improved over that obtained with conventional pickup coils by using a multiturn pickup coil whose interturn spacing is adjusted to provide a source-coil transfer function with specific characteristics.

Impedance changes in a coil due to a nearby small conducting sphere
TL;DR: In this paper, an expression for the impedance change in a coil carrying a low-frequency alternating current due to the presence of a small conducting sphere is derived, which is the product of two separate factors: one depends on the properties of the coil via the magnetic induction, and the other depends on a sphere.
