Abstract
The principles of operation of fiber-optic gyroscopes are reviewed. Performance-limiting phenomena are discussed along with methods to reduce their effect on the rotation-rate signal. Current technology and performance of state-of-the-art systems are presented. Finally, a direction of future research and possible applications are indicated.

The Sagnac effect: correct and incorrect explanations

TL;DR: In this paper, it is shown that the Sagnac effect is a consequence of the relativistic law of velocity composition and that it can also be explained adequately within the framework of general relativity.

Polarization optics of twisted single-mode fibers

TL;DR: In twisted single-mode optical fibers the polarization of light is affected by an elastooptically induced optical activity and by a modification of any linear birefringence present.

Bending-induced birefringence in single-mode fibers

TL;DR: In a bent optical fiber, lateral internal stress induces a birefringence, betab, where r is the fiber radius and R is the bending radius.

Single-mode fibre fractional wave devices and polarisation controllers

TL;DR: In this article, the authors describe new single-mode fiber optic devices which are completely equivalent to fractional wave plates of classical optics and employ a very simple configuration which uses the stress birefringence induced by bending the fibre.
