The theory of near-field measurements for antenna practitioners is summarized, and the measurement procedures in three coordinate systems, namely rectangular, cylindrical, and spherical are outlined. Specific topics include probe characterization, measurement systems, data reduction, and attendant accuracies. The results of recent studies are also summarized, and some brief remarks on future applications of near-field measurements in the laboratory, the production line, and in field testing and evaluation conclude the paper.read more

An overview of near-field antenna measurements
TL;DR: In this paper, a brief history of near-field antenna measurements with and without probe correction is outlined, beginning with ideal probe scanning on arbitrary surfaces and ending with arbitrary probes scanning on planar, cylindrical, and spherical surfaces.

An examination of the theory and practices of planar near-field measurement
TL;DR: Using computer simulation, several fundamental issues in planar near-field measurement are examined in this paper, and the results indicate that some of the prevailing views of practices regarding the evanescent modes, sampling and filtering of data, and the selection of the location and directivity of the probe are incomplete or misleading.

A plane-polar approach for far field reconstruction from near-field measurements
TL;DR: In this paper, the far field of an arbitrary antenna may be calculated from near-field measurements using the Jacobi-Bessel series expansion and its utility relative to the FFT in polar geometry is examined.

FFT applications to plane-polar near-field antenna measurements
M.S. Gatti,Y. Rahmat-Samii +1 more
TL;DR: In this article, the four-point bivariate Lagrange interpolation algorithm was applied to near-field antenna data measured in a plane-polar facility, and the results were sufficiently accurate to permit the use of the FFT (fast Fourier transform) algorithm to calculate the far-field patterns of the antenna.

Planar near-field to far-field transformation using an array of dipole probes
P. Petre,Tapan K. Sarkar +1 more
TL;DR: In this paper, a method for computing far-field antenna patterns from measured near-field data measured by an array of planar dipole probes is presented, where the mutual coupling between the array of probes and the test antenna modeled by magnetic dipoles is taken into account.

Evaluation of antenna Q
R. Collin,S. Rothschild +1 more
TL;DR: In this paper, a method is presented for evaluating the Q of an antenna, where the Q is defined as in conventional network theory, and the method consists of subtracting the energy density associated with the power flow from the total energy density, thus enabling the magnetic and electric reactive energy to be computed.

Determination of far-field antenna patterns from near-field measurements
TL;DR: In this paper, the aperture phase and amplitude distributions are sampled by a scanning field probe, and then the measured distributions are transformed to the far field by a plane wave that is created by a feed and large reflector in the immediate vicinity of the test antenna.

Spatial sampling and filtering in near-field measurements
TL;DR: In this paper, a sample spacing criterion and a data minimization technique for measurements made over the surface of a plane in the near field of an antenna are presented and compared with those measured on a standard far-field range.
