TLDR
Genetic and the concomitant physiological uniformity explain the well-known tendency for local populations of Haliplanella to disappear suddenly and illustrate a common outcome of the founder effect.
Abstract
Populations of Haliplanella luciae on the Atlantic coast of North America typically are composed of one or a few strictly asexual clones. The lack of genetic variability in one local population, that at Blue Hill Falls, Maine, is reflected in the population's response to extremes of temperature and salinity. As the limits of tolerance are approached, there is an abrupt and epidemic incidence of mortality, rather than a gradual one. Genetic and the concomitant physiological uniformity explain the well-known tendency for local populations of Haliplanella to disappear suddenly and illustrate a common outcome of the founder effect. The success of Haliplanella as a colonizer is due to its extreme hardiness toward physical environmental factors and to its prolific asexual nature. Asexual reproduction by longitudinal fission and by pedal laceration not only provides a means of rapid colonization of a new habitat, but also a means of producing multiple copies of genotypes that have proved to be successful under lo...

Geographic variation in clonal structure in a reef- building caribbean coral, acropora palmata

TL;DR: It is argued that sexual recruitment is more prevalent in the eastern range of A. palmata than the west, and that these geographic differences in the contribution of reproductive modes to population structure may be related to habitat characteristics.

Reproduction of Cnidaria

TL;DR: Only by comparing aspects of reproduction among cnidarians of various taxa will idiosyncratically adaptive strategies be distinguished from reproductive characters that reflect evolution and so are phylogenetically informative.

Variation in contributions of asexual reproduction to the genetic structure of populations of the sea anemone metridium senile.

TL;DR: Northeastern North American populations of the sea anemone Metridium senile show marked differences in levels of genotypic diversity, and it is presently uncertain whether the few genotypes found in some populations are particularly well‐adapted to local conditions.

Population structure of a clonal gorgonian coral: the interplay between clonal reproduction and disturbance.

TL;DR: A generalized model relating population structure of clonal species to disturbance and the mode of vegetative propagation is presented, which shows that among these taxa disturbance has a greater affect on individual survival than on propagation.

Sex and evolution.

TL;DR: The relationship between various types of reproduction and the evolutionary process is explored, including the evolutionary development of diverse forms of sexuality, such as anisogamy, hermaphroditism, and the evolution of differences between males and females in reproductive strategy.
