TLDR
Injection of rabbits with acetylcholine receptor highly purified from the electric organ of Electrophorus electricus emulsified in complete Freund's adjuvant resulted in the production of precipitating antibody to acetylCholine receptor.Abstract:
Injection of rabbits with acetylcholine receptor highly purified from the electric organ of Electrophorus electricus emulsified in complete Freund's adjuvant resulted in the production of precipitating antibody to acetylcholine receptor. After the second injection of antigen, the animals developed the flaccid paralysis and abnormal electromyographs characteristic of neuromuscular blockade. Treatment with the anticholinesterases edrophonium or neostigmine dramatically alleviated the paralysis and the fatigue seen in electromyography.read more

Antibody to acetylcholine receptor in myasthenia gravis Prevalence, clinical correlates, and diagnostic value
TL;DR: Assay of antireceptor antibody should prove a useful test in the diagnosis of myasthenia gravis, and presence or titer of antibody did not appear to correlate with age, sex, steroid therapy, or duration of symptoms.

Acetylcholinesterase New roles for an old actor
Hermona Soreq,Shlomo Seidman +1 more
TL;DR: The time is ripe to summarize the evidence on a remarkable diversity of acetylcholinesterase functions, as well as some of the long-suspected 'non-classical' actions of this enzyme, which have more recently driven a profound revolution in research.

Acetylcholine receptor: an allosteric protein
TL;DR: The nicotine receptor for the neurotransmitter acetylcholine is an allosteric protein composed of four different subunits assembled in a transmembrane pentamer alpha 2 beta gamma delta.

Myasthenia gravis: past, present, and future.
TL;DR: Myasthenia gravis is an autoimmune syndrome caused by the failure of neuromuscular transmission, which results from the binding of autoantibodies to proteins involved in signaling at the neuromUScular junction.

The metabolism of fatty acids in the rat. vi. arachidonic acid.
TL;DR: Arachidonic acid was preferentially incorporated into liver phospholipids as might be expected from the preponderance of this fatty acid in liverospholipid as compared to glycerides and the pattern of label in the blood glyceride closely resembled that in the corresponding liver fraction.

Myasthenia Gravis: A New Hypothesis:
TL;DR: The Calabar bean is asked to be thrownaway, or at least to keep its active constituent, physostigmine, out of sight, for I believe that this magic bean, or its synthetic competitors may have blurred the authors' vision of the true nature of myasthenia gravis.

Immunopharmacological disease: a break in tolerance to receptor sites
TL;DR: It is suggested that a pathogenic immune response can be directed against exposed cell-membrane receptor sites for humoral agents such as neurotransmitters or peptide hormones, and that interaction of an antibody or immunocyte with the receptor site causes an " immunopharmacological" block which disrupts the normal function of that cell and related cells.
