Beurteilung und Entwässerung des Methylalkohols mit Hilfe von Magnesium

Eine einfache Methode zur Darstellung wasser‐freier Alkohole

Bariummethylat, Strontiummethylat und Calciummethylat kristallisieren hexagonal im (CdJ2)-Typ (a = 4,177, 3,904 und 3,67 A, c = 8,325, 8,375 und 8,35 A). Solvatfreies Magnesiummethylat konnte nur in amorpher Form erhalten werden.



Aus den IR-Spektren der Erdalkalimethylate folgt, das man in Ba(OCH3)2, Sr(OCH3)2, Ca(OCH3)2 und Mg(OH, OCH3)2 eine weitgehend ionogene Bindung zwischen Metall und Methylatgruppe annehmen mus, wahrend im formelreinen Mg(OCH3)2 eine uberwiegend kovalente (MgO)-Bindung vorliegt. Die IR-Frequenzen des „Methylations” (Symmetrie C3v) werden im Vergleich mit den Schwingungen isosterer Molekeln diskutiert. Im IR-Spektrum von Magnesiummethylatsolvaten uberdeckt die Absorption des Kristallmethanols weitgehend die der Methylatgruppe.



Barium, strontium and calcium methoxide were found to crystallize in the hexagonal (CdJ2)-form (a = 4.177, 3.904 and 3.67 A, c = 8.325, 8.375 and 8.35 A, respectively). Solvent free magnesium mehoxide could be isolated only in amorphous form.



The IR spectra of the alkaline-earth metal methoxides indicate that in Ba(OCH3)2, Sr(OCH3)2, Ca(OCH3)2 and Mg(OH, OCH3)2 the bonding between the metal and methoxide groups is mainly ionic, whereas in the case of the Mg(OCH3)2 it is mainly covalent. The IR absorption frequences of the “methoxide” ion are discussed in comparison with the bands of corresponding isosteric molecules. The IR absorption of the methanol solvate of solvated magnesium methoxides was found to overlap, to a large extend, the absorption bands of the methoxide group.

Proton magnetic resonance widths and relaxation times have been measured in ammonium chloride, bromide and iodide, methyl alcohol and dimethyl sulphate from 90°k to 290°k. Line width transitions were observed in NH4Cl and NH4Br at 135°k and 99°k respectively. There were no sharp changes in either the relaxation time or line width at the temperatures of the λ-specific heat anomalies of the ammonium salts. Evidently, there is no marked increase in the rate of rotation of the ammonium ion at these transitions. The results for NH4Br suggest that rotation of the NH4+ ion is hindered by a potential barrier of about 3 500 cal/mole. The N-H distance is 1.03±0.01 A. The line width and relaxation time show pronounced changes at the λ-point of methyl alcohol, indicating a sudden change in the motion of the CH3OH molecule. In solid dimethyl sulphate, a narrow line of small amplitude appears at about 170°k.
