TLDR
The reduction in growth rate of T. castaneum larvae and S. zeamais adults was mainly due to a behavioural (feeding deterrent) action rather than to post-ingestive toxicity of the oil, and the essential oil had a weaker feeding deterrent action against E. rutaecarpa.

Plant products as fumigants for stored-product insect control

TL;DR: Although, in laboratory tests with adult insects, some of the plant compounds have shown insect toxicity comparable to methyl bromide or chloropicrin, their physical properties such as high molecular weight as well as high boiling point and very low vapour pressure are barriers for application in large-scale fumigations.
Journal ArticleDOI

Antifungal activity of lemongrass (Cympopogon citratus L.) essential oil against key postharvest pathogens

TL;DR: The use of pure lemongrass essential oil is suggested to be an innovative and useful tool as alternative to the use of synthetic fungicides or other sanitation techniques in storage/packaging.
Journal ArticleDOI

Fungicidal and anti-aflatoxigenic effects of the essential oil of Cymbopogon citratus (DC.) Stapf. (lemongrass) against Aspergillus flavus Link. isolated from stored rice.

TL;DR: Aims: To develop a natural fungicide against aflatoxigenic fungi, to protect stored rice, using the essential oil of lemongrass.
Journal ArticleDOI

Repellent activity of essential oils from seven aromatic plants grown in Colombia against Sitophilus zeamais Motschulsky (Coleoptera)

TL;DR: Essential oils isolated from seven aromatic plants grown in Colombia were analyzed by gas chromatography–mass spectrometry and evaluated for repellent activity against Sitophilus zeamais using the area preference method, with Lippia origanoides the most active.
Journal ArticleDOI

Toxic and repellent effects of Baccharis salicifolia essential oil on Tribolium castaneum

TL;DR: Toxic and repellent effects of chemical derivatives of the major sesquiterpene present in B salicifolia essential oil, as well as a series of monoterpenes, were evaluated in order to investigate structure-activity relationships.

The Designation of Chemicals in Terms of the Responses They Elicit from Insects

TL;DR: An analysis of the behavioral effects of chemicals on locomotion, feeding, and oviposition has led to the designation and definition of five terms; namely, arrestant, stimulant, attractant, repellent, deterrent, and it is proposed that these five be employed as standard terms.
Journal ArticleDOI

Allylglucosinolate and herbivorous caterpillars: a contrast in toxicity and tolerance.

TL;DR: Larval growth of Spodoptera eridania, a generalist feeder, is inhibited by high but not by low concentrations of the compound, while that of Pieris rapae, a crucifer specialist, is not affected even by artificially high concentrations of allylglucosinolate.
