Analysis and Optimum Design of Composite Grid Structures

TL;DR: In this article, an integrated equivalent stiffness model is developed to describe a grid structure with or without laminate skins, where in-plane bending and shear of ribs are included without introducing any extra degree of freedom so that Mindlin's plate theory can still be adopted.

Buckling of symmetrical cross-ply composite rectangular plates under a linearly varying in-plane load

TL;DR: In this article, an exact solution for buckling of simply supported symmetrical cross-ply composite rectangular plates under a linearly varying edge load is presented based on the first-order shear deformation theory for moderately thick laminated plates.
Journal ArticleDOI

Optimization of ply angles in laminated composite structures by a hybrid, asynchronous, parallel evolutionary algorithm

TL;DR: An evolutionary algorithm approach aimed at the global optimization of ply angles in laminated composites is proposed, enriched by first-order local search and a niching strategy.

Optimization strategy for minimizing damage in postbuckling stiffened panels

TL;DR: In this paper, a finite element-based preliminary optimization methodology for postbuckling stiffened panels is presented, which takes into account damage mechanisms that lead to delamination and subsequent failure by stiffener debonding.

Optimum Design of Composite Structures: A Literature Survey (1969-2009)

TL;DR: In this paper, a review of the literature on the optimization of composites is presented, which is classified according to the type of the composite structure optimized in those studies, the loading conditions, the objective function, the structural analysis method, the design variables, the constraints, the failure criteria, and the search algorithm used by the researchers.

A simplex method for function minimization

TL;DR: A method is described for the minimization of a function of n variables, which depends on the comparison of function values at the (n 41) vertices of a general simplex, followed by the replacement of the vertex with the highest value by another point.

Sequential Application of Simplex Designs in Optimisation and Evolutionary Operation

TL;DR: A technique for empirical optimisation is presented in which a sequence of experimental designs each in the form of a regular or irregular simplex is used, each simplex having all vertices but one in common with the preceding simplex, and being completed by one new point.

A New Method of Constrained Optimization and a Comparison With Other Methods

TL;DR: A new method for finding the maximum of a general non-linear function of several variables within a constrained region is described, and shown to be efficient compared with existing methods when the required optimum lies on one or more constraints.

Design of laminated plates for maximum buckling load

TL;DR: In this paper, the buckling load of laminated plates having midplane symmetry is maximized for a given total thickness, where the thicknesses of the layers are taken as the design variables.
