Capturing attention when attention blinks.

TLDR
Results suggest that a singleton exogenously engaged attention even when processing of a previous target was continuing apace, and even when the singleton did not possess the key target feature, it still succeeded in capturing attention, although the effects were both feeble and fleeting.

The attentional blink: A review of data and theory

TL;DR: It is concluded that the attentional blink arises from attentional demands of Tl for selection, working memory encoding, episodic registration, and response selection, which prevents this high-level central resource from being applied to T2 at shortT1-T2 lags.

Top-down controlled, delayed selection in the attentional blink.

TL;DR: It is shown that cuing is not interrupted by a distractor intervening between the cue and T2, and this findings provide evidence for a contingent, delayed selection account of the AB.

Top-down control settings and the attentional blink: Evidence for nonspatial contingent capture

TL;DR: The authors showed that nonspatial attentional selection is subject to capture by top-down attentional control, but only if the eliciting stimulus matches topdown control settings and control settings can vary in specificity, and this effect does not reflect masking or dispersion of spatial attention.
Journal ArticleDOI

Surprise-induced blindness: a stimulus-driven attentional limit to conscious perception.

TL;DR: It is concluded that the capture of stimulus-driven attention alone can limit explicit perception, and this powerful but short-lived deficit contrasts with a milder but more enduring form of attentional capture that accompanies singleton presentations in rapid serial visual presentations.
Journal ArticleDOI

How to keep attention from straying: get engaged!

TL;DR: It is concluded that attentional engagement serves to lock out capture by irrelevant, salient stimuli.

Orienting of attention

TL;DR: This paper explores one aspect of cognition through the use of a simple model task in which human subjects are asked to commit attention to a position in visual space other than fixation by orienting a covert mechanism that seems sufficiently time locked to external events that its trajectory can be traced across the visual field in terms of momentary changes in the efficiency of detecting stimuli.

Neural Mechanisms of Selective Visual Attention

TL;DR: The two basic phenomena that define the problem of visual attention can be illustrated in a simple example and selectivity-the ability to filter out un wanted information is illustrated.

The Attention System of the Human Brain

Visual search and stimulus similarity.

TL;DR: A new theory of search and visual attention is presented, which accounts for harmful effects of nontargets resembling any possible target, the importance of local nontarget grouping, and many other findings.

Temporary suppression of visual processing in an RSVP task: an attentional blink? .

TL;DR: The authors found that the presentation of stimuli after the target but before target-identification processes are complete produces interference at a letter recognition stage, which may cause the temporary suppression of visual attention mechanisms observed in the present study.
