Changes in the macrostresses and microstresses in steel with fatigue
TLDR
The residual stresses in both the ferrite and cementite phases of fatigued 1080 steel specimens with pearlite, spheroidite and tempered martensite microstructures were measured using X-ray diffraction as mentioned in this paper.Abstract:
The residual stresses in both the ferrite and cementite phases of fatigued 1080 steel specimens with pearlite, spheroidite and tempered martensite microstructures were measured using X-ray diffraction giving both the macrostresses and microstresses. Specimens with no initial stresses showed little changes with fatigue. Specimens with initial macrostresses and microstresses showed fading of the stresses, the fading being slowest for the strongest microstructure. Hydrostatic microstresses are present after heat treatment owing to the differential thermal properties of the cementite and ferrite.read more

The development of grain-orientation-dependent residual stressess in a cyclically deformed alloy
TL;DR: A neutron diffraction investigation of the development of intergranular stresses, which vary as a function of grain orientations, in 316 stainless steel during high-cycle fatigue found that a large inter granular stress developed before cracks started to appear.

Load sharing between austenite and ferrite in a duplex stainless steel during cyclic loading
TL;DR: In this article, the load sharing between phases and the evolution of micro- and macrostresses during cyclic loading was investigated in a 1.5mm cold-rolled sheet of the duplex stainless steel SAF 2304.

Local variations of lattice parameter and long-range internal stresses during cyclic deformation of polycrystalline copper
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors measured X-ray line profiles and line positions on single grains of cyclically deformed polycrystalline copper specimens unloaded from characteristic points of the stress-strain hysteresis loop.

Fatigue Crack/Residual Stress Field Interactions and Their Implications for Damage-Tolerant Design
TL;DR: In this paper, the complementary effects of growing fatigue crack and residual stress field have on each other were discussed in terms of the implications that residual stress interactions have for damage-tolerant-based design.

High compressive pre-strains reduce the bending fatigue life of nitinol wire.
TL;DR: The results of the present study indicate that large compressive pre-strains are detrimental to the fatigue properties of Nitinol, and underscore the importance of accounting for thermo-mechanical history in the design and testing of wire-based percutaneous implants.

Residual Stress: Measurement by Diffraction and Interpretation
Ismail C. Noyan,J. B. Cohen +1 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors proposed a method to measure residual stress from X-ray diffraction data. But, their method is not suitable for the analysis of nonlinear elasticity theory.

Determination of the Gaussian and Lorentzian content of experimental line shapes
TL;DR: In this paper, the approximation of the Voigt line shape by the sum of a Gaussian and a Lorentzian of equal width is explored and the relative intensities of these two lines in the approximate function are related to the widths of the components of the VOIGT function using nonlinear least-squares fitting.

Generalised Least-squares Determination of Triaxial Stress States by X-ray Diffraction and the Associated Errors.

TL;DR: In this article, a new method is proposed for determining the general stress tensor, which considerably reduces the variances of the stresses due to counting statistics and gradients, and a new set of tilts is recommended to minimise these errors.

Equilibrium conditions for the average stresses measured by X-rays
TL;DR: In this paper, a three-dimensional pseudo-macrostress field is described, and the stresses in the direction of the surface normal can be measured with X-rays, but only if there is a uniform plastic deformation in the sampled volume that is different from that in the rest of the material.
