TLDR
It is concluded that the small basophils are the source of thyrotropic hormone, and the violet cells seem to secrete an ICSH-like hormone in the larval acidophils.
Abstract
Histological changes are described in the pituitary and thyroids of Bufo bufo at subsequent stages of metamorphosis Special attention is paid to the differentiation of the chromophilic cell types in the pars distalis of the adenohypophysis

The effects of metopirone and aldactone on the pars distalis of the pituitary, the interrenal tissue and the interstitial tissue of the testis in the common frog, Rana temporaria

TL;DR: It is suggested that either the basophils 3 or the caudal chromophobic cells have a corticotropic function in the distal lobe of male common frogs.

Hypothalamic neurosecretion and metamorphosis in Xenopus laevis

TL;DR: In this paper, normal and propylthiouracil (PTU) treated Xenopus laevis tadpoles were fixed during all stages of metamorphosis and sagittal sections were stained with aldehyde fuchsin (AF) or pseudoisocyanine (PIC).

Inhibition of thyroxine induced tail resorption in vitro by pituitary grafts from different stages of metamorphosis

TL;DR: The results demonstrate that the response of tail tissues to thyroxine increases during early prometamorphosis and with increasing rapidity during the last third of this period, in harmony with the concept that amphibian metamorphosis may be dependent upon a bihormonal system in which thyroid hormone promotes while a prolactin-like hormone counteracts this process.

Two types of basophils in the anterior pituitary of the rat and their respective cytophysiological significance.

TL;DR: A new elastic stain, aldehyde-fuchsin, in combination with a modified azan technique, permits the clear-cut distinction between two classes of basophils in the pituitary of the rat.

Function and cytology of the normal and autotransplanted pars distalis of the hypophysis in the toad Bufo bufo (L)

TL;DR: The functional activity of the pars distalis following heterotopic and homoiotopic autotransplantation has been studied in adult toads of both sexes in the spring, about a month after breeding, and in the autumn on toads with mature gonads.
