Abstract
Salivary Streptococcus mutans was quantified to detect possible age-, sex-, and group-dependent differences at the end of a 3-year field study assessing the value of partial substitution of sucrose with xylitol (X group) in comparison with systemic administration of fluoride (F group) and restorative treatment solely (C group). The material of this substudy consisted of 390 institutionalized children aged 9–14 years. S. mutans was determined through the spatula technique and grouped into categories 0, 106 CFU/ml saliva. Zero to <105 values included more than 80% of the subjects of the X group. The cross-sectional comparison between groups showed lower S. mutans values in the X group than in the F and C groups. These differences between groups were highly significant. S. mutans was not dependent on age or sex.

A double-blind crossover trial of Oral Balance gel and Biotene® toothpaste versus placebo in patients with xerostomia following radiation therapy

TL;DR: The palliative effects of Oral Balance gel and Biotene toothpaste were superior to the effects of a placebo and no effect on oral colonization by Candida species and cariogenic oral microflora was seen with use of the topical agents.

Effect of xylitol on growth of nasopharyngeal bacteria in vitro.

TL;DR: If xylitol reduces the growth of S. pneumoniae in the nasopharynx, it could also reduce the carriage of this pathogen and thus have clinical significance in the prevention of pneumococcal diseases.

Effect of Xylitol Consumption on the Plaque-Saliva Distribution of Mutans Streptococci and the Occurrence and Long-term Survival of Xylitol-resistant Strains

TL;DR: Xylitol consumption modifies the mutans streptococci distribution between the dental plaque and the saliva and suggests that an unknown characteristic of the XR mutants allows them to be more easily shed into the saliva from the plaque than the xylitol-sensitive parental strains.

Associations between microbiological and salivary caries activity tests and caries experience in Hungarian adolescents.

TL;DR: DMFT and DMFS values as well as mutans streptococci and candida counts were lower in the capital than in the other city, and Statistically significant correlations were found between DMFT, DMFS mean values, and salivary microbiological counts.

Preventing Dental Caries: Current and Prospective Strategies

TL;DR: Strategies of caries prevention can be directed at the resistance of the host/teeth, at the diet, atThe microflora or all three, and the appropriate preventive interventions depend on the level of Caries risk.

Selective medium for streptococcus mutans

TL;DR: A selective medium was developed for the isolation of Streptococcus mutans from human dental plaque with maximum inhibition of the balance of the streptococcal flora normally encountered on this medium.

Practical method to facilitate estimation of Streptococcus mutans levels in saliva.

TL;DR: It was shown that the spatula method gave a good estimation of the level of S. mutans infection, and is useful in epidemiological studies or in selecting persons at a high caries risk, and when ordinary saliva sampling cannot be done, for example in small children.

A comparison between different methods for prediction of caries activity.

TL;DR: The combination of high numbers of incipient smooth surface lesions, S. mutans and lactobacilli gave a mean value of caries activity almost three times that of the whole group.

Evaluation of a micromethod for determination of Streptococcus mutans and Lactobacillus infection.

TL;DR: A micromethod was developed for quantitative estimation in saliva of Streptococcus mutans and lactobacilli and showed excellent agreement with those obtained with conventional agar plating.

The effect of chewing xylitol gum on the plaque and saliva levels of Streptococcus mutans

TL;DR: Findings suggested that the small amounts of xylitol used (about 5 gm) resulted in a suppression of S mutans, which is commonly reported to cause caries increment when chewed in a gum.
