TLDR
Antibodies which kill lymphocytes from other persons were found in 35 of 113 healthy subjects immunized with influenza, polio, and other vaccines, suggesting that a wide scale cross reactivity of microbial and human lymphocyte antigens may exist.
Abstract
SUMMARY Antibodies which kill lymphocytes from other persons were found in 35 of 113 healthy subjects immunized with influenza, polio, and other vaccines. These lymphocytotoxic antibodies were characteristically more active at colder temperatures (15 C) and were IgM in nature, as were similar cytotoxins found earlier in systemic lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, infectious mononucleosis, rubella, and measles. It is suggested that a wide scale cross reactivity of microbial and human lymphocyte antigens may exist.

Cytotoxins in disease. Autocytotoxins in lupus.

TL;DR: Lymphocytotoxic antibodies were found in 56 of 64 serum specimens from patients with systemic lupus erythematosus and 30 of 53 patients with rheumatoid arthritis.

Nature of cold-reactive antibodies to lymphocyte surface determinants in systemic lupus erythematosus.

TL;DR: Sera from patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), as detected by microcytotoxicity and indirect immunofluorescence, were predominantly cold reactive and of the IgM class, and the functional significance of these antilymphocyte antibodies is discussed.

Biologic activity of cold-reacting autoantibodies (first of two parts).

TL;DR: It is shown that in patients in whom hemoglobinuria occurred after their feet were immersed in ice water, an autolysin combined with red cells in the cold; lysis resulted from the action of labile serum factors (now known to be complement) when the temperature was subsequently raised.

Lymphocytotoxic antibody in inflammatory bowel disease. A family study.

The influence of homogeneous cold agglutinins on polymorphonuclear and mononuclear phagocytes

TL;DR: It is concluded that cold agglutinins are cytotoxic in vitro to polymorphonjclear and mononuclear phagocytes and that they decrease the phagocytic activity of the surviving cells.
