Defining and developing competence: A strategic process paradigm
TLDR
Empirical results from a study of 160 new initiatives in 40 organizations from 16 countries suggest that it is feasible to operationalize and measure these constructs and that comprehension and deftness are important correlates of an organization's degree of competence as defined.Abstract:
In this paper, competence is defined in operational terms as the degree to which the firm or its subunits can reliably meet or exceed objectives. Two antecedents to competence (and thus competitive advantage) are then developed and defined. These are the ‘comprehension’ of the management team working on developing competence and the ‘deftness’ of their task execution. Empirical results from a study of 160 new initiatives in 40 organizations from 16 countries suggest that: (1) it is feasible to operationalize and measure these constructs; (2) comprehension and deftness are important correlates of an organization's degree of competence as defined; and (3) a process-centered paradigm for understanding competence development shows promise.read more

Absorptive Capacity: A Review, Reconceptualization, and Extension
Shaker A. Zahra,Gerard George +1 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors identify key dimensions of absorptive capacity and offer a reconceptualization of this construct, and distinguish between a firm's potential and realized capacity, and then advance a model outlining the conditions when the firm's realized capacities can differentially influence the creation and sustenance of its competitive advantage.

International expansion by new venture firms: International diversity, mode of market entry, technological learning, and performance.
TL;DR: This article examined the effects of international expansion, as measured by international diversity and mode of market entry, on a firm's technological learning and the effect of this learning on the firm's financial performance.

The dynamics of product innovation and firm competences
TL;DR: This study examines how product innovation contributes to the renewal of the firm through its dynamic and reciprocal relation with the firm's competences through field research in five high-tech firms of varying age, size, and level of diversification.

Cognition and corporate governance: Understanding boards of directors as strategic decision making groups
TL;DR: In this article, the authors developed a model of board processes by integrating the literature on boards of directors with group dynamics and workgroup effectiveness, and the resulting model illuminates the complexity of board dynamics and paves the way for future empirical research that expands and refines our understanding of what makes boards effective.

Absorptive capacity: a new perspective on learning and innovation
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors argue that the ability of a firm to recognize the value of new, external information, assimilate it, and apply it to commercial ends is critical to its innovative capabilities.

The fifth discipline - the art and practice of the learning organization
TL;DR: Senge's Fifth Discipline is a set of principles for building a "learning organization" as discussed by the authors, where people expand their capacity to create the results they truly desire, where new and expansive patterns of thinking are nutured, where collective aspiration is set free, and where people are contually learning together.
