The need to take into account what is known about humans' interpretational capabilities is suggested, and novel design opportunities that lie in the integration of cues with functionality and content on the mobile phone are pointed out.Abstract:
This paper considers how we may design future mobile awareness systems. Building upon research on social cognition, we suggest the need to take into account what is known about humans' interpretational capabilities. We identify design issues from the level of an individual awareness cue to the level of a product concept, systematically exposing the associated solution spaces. Using four real applications as analytical examples, we point out multiple ways in which design can affect the user's processing of awareness information and thereby yield different outcomes in the use of technology. We conclude by pointing out novel design opportunities that lie in the integration of cues with functionality and content on the mobile phone.read more

Understanding the privacy implications of using context-based awareness cues in social networks
Ville Antila,Jussi Polet +1 more
TL;DR: An experimental mobile application is presented, which allows users to add different descriptions of context information to their Facebook and Twitter status updates and indicates that user-defined abstractions of context items were often preferred over more accurate indicators due to privacy concerns or discomfort in sharing.

Sense me: Supporting awareness in parent-child relationships through mobile sensing
TL;DR: Sense{\mu} (pronounced "sense me"), a mobile application that aims at supporting awareness in parent- child relationships through the sensing capabilities of mobile devices, is introduced and the relevance of three types of awareness information is discussed.
Visualização e Filtragem de Informações de Percepção em Groupwares Móveis
TL;DR: This study aims to identify the awareness information that should be presented to the user and how to arrange them in the best way in the interface, considering the small size of mobile devices.
Studying and Designing for Mobile Social Awareness Cues in Urban Interactions
TL;DR: In this article, the authors draw upon three methods (ethnography, urban spatial analysis, psychophysical experimentation) to study how social information is represented in awareness cues and communicated to mobile users, and how this informs the design of nonvisual interaction methods that enhance urban interactions.

Sense me: Supporting awareness in parent-child relationships through mobile sensing
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors introduce Senseμ, a mobile application that aims at supporting awareness in parent-child relationships through the sensing capabilities of mobile devices, and discuss the relevance of three types of awareness information: physical activity inferred from accelerometers, verbal activity during class hours inferred from microphones, and social activities inferred from Bluetooth pair-wise proximity sensing.

Judgment Under Uncertainty: Heuristics and Biases
Amos Tversky,Daniel Kahneman +1 more
TL;DR: The authors described three heuristics that are employed in making judgements under uncertainty: representativeness, availability of instances or scenarios, and adjustment from an anchor, which is usually employed in numerical prediction when a relevant value is available.

The duality of technology: rethinking the concept of technology in organizations
TL;DR: In this paper, a new theoretical model with which to examine the interaction between technology and organizations is developed. But the model is based on the assumption that technology is an objective, external force that would have deterministic impacts on organizational properties such as structure.

Awareness and coordination in shared workspaces
Paul Dourish,Victoria Bellotti +1 more
TL;DR: A study of shared editor use is discussed which suggests that awareness information provided and exploited passively through the shared workspace, allows users to move smoothly between close and loose collaboration, and to assign and coordinate work dynamically.

Reducing social context cues: electronic mail in organizational communication

TL;DR: It is argued that electronic mail does not simply speed up the exchange of information but leads to the exchangeof new information as well, and much of the information conveyed through electronic mail was information that would not have been conveyed through another medium.

Groupware and social dynamics: eight challenges for developers
TL;DR: This chapter discusses challenges for developers while using groupware applications, noting that most interest in groupware development is found among the developers and users of commercial off-the-shelf products who previously focused exclusively on single-user applications.
