Journal ArticleDOI

Involvement of a Plasmid in Virulence of Campylobacter jejuni 81-176

TL;DR: The isogenic virB11 mutant of strain 81-176 also demonstrated significantly reduced virulence in the ferret diarrheal disease model, suggesting that plasmids are involved in the virulence of a subset of C. jejuni pathogens.
Journal ArticleDOI

Pathophysiology of Campylobacter enteritis

TL;DR: Campylobacter jejuni has exploded from obscurity to be recognized as a major human enteric pathogen, which has triggered numerous bacteriological investigations, but the many mysteries and surprises associated with the organism will challenge the creative efforts of scientists for years to come.
Journal ArticleDOI

Use of plasmid profiles in epidemiologic surveillance of disease outbreaks and in tracing the transmission of antibiotic resistance.

TL;DR: In these methods partially purified plasma deoxyribonucleic acid species are separated according to molecular size by agarose gel electrophoresis and the resulting pattern of fragments can be used to verify the identity of bacterial isolates.
Journal ArticleDOI

Pulsed-field gel electrophoresis of Campylobacter jejuni and Campylobacter coli genomic DNA and its epidemiologic application.

TL;DR: Results from these studies indicate that PFGE analysis of SmaI-restricted genomic DNA provides a reliable means of differentiating C. jejuni from C. coli and may represent a more practical approach to epidemiologic studies than combining conventional DNA restriction digestion pattern with RNA hybridization procedures.
Journal ArticleDOI

Evaluation of 10 methods to distinguish epidemic-associated Campylobacter strains.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors compared four phenotypic and six genotypic methods for distinguishing Campylobacter jejuni strains from animals and humans involved in four epidemics.

Campylobacter enteritis: a "new" disease.

M B Skirrow
- 02 Jul 1977 -
TL;DR: Campylobacters are a relatively unrecognised cause of acute enteritis, but these findings suggest that they may be a common cause, and poultry may be the primary source of the organism.

Simple agarose gel electrophoretic method for the identification and characterization of plasmid deoxyribonucleic acid.

TL;DR: Agarose gel electrophoresis may be employed effectively for the detection and preliminary characterization of plasmid deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) present in clinical isolates and laboratory strains of gram-negative microorganisms.

Isolation of large bacterial plasmids and characterization of the P2 incompatibility group plasmids pMG1 and pMG5.

J B Hansen, +1 more
TL;DR: Large plasmids from Agrobacterium tumefaciens, Salmonella typhimurium, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas putida, and PseUDomonas aeruginosa were routinely and consistently isolated using a procedure which does not require ultracentrifugation but includes steps designed to separate large-plasmid DNA from the bacterial folded chromosome.

Does breast milk protect against septicæmia in the newborn

TL;DR: It is suggested that breast milk may offer a certain immunity to the newborn against early infections by bacteria of enteric origin.
