Difference-in-Differences with Variation in Treatment Timing

TLDR
In this article, the authors derived an expression for the general difference-in-differences estimator and showed that it is a weighted average of all possible two-group/two-period estimators in the data.
Abstract
The canonical difference-in-differences (DD) model contains two time periods, “pre” and “post”, and two groups, “treatment” and “control”. Most DD applications, however, exploit variation across groups of units that receive treatment at different times. This paper derives an expression for this general DD estimator, and shows that it is a weighted average of all possible two-group/two-period DD estimators in the data. This result provides detailed guidance about how to use regression DD in practice. I define the DD estimand and show how it averages treatment effect heterogeneity and that it is biased when effects change over time. I propose a new balance test derived from a unified definition of common trends. I show how to decompose the difference between two specifications, and I apply it to models that drop untreated units, weight, disaggregate time fixed effects, control for unit-specific time trends, or exploit a third difference.

The effects of public health insurance in labor markets with informal jobs: Evidence from Mexico.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors studied the labor market effects of the most significant public health insurance expansion in the Americas: Mexico's Seguro Popular (SP) and found that women experienced a 15% decrease in the probability of transitioning from informal employment to inactivity, and this reduction was concentrated among female secondary earners residing in households with dependents.

Early assessment of epidemiological trends associated with SARS-CoV-2 variants of concern in Germany

TL;DR: An early assessment of population-level effects from confirmed cases of SARS-CoV-2 variants of concern (VOC) on 7-day incidence rates in 401 German cities and regions shows that VOC effects on incidence rates grow over time.

Treatment Effects in Interactive Fixed Effects Models

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors focus on the case where there is a single unobserved time-invariant variable whose effect is allowed to change over time, though they also allow for time fixed effects and unobserved individual-level heterogeneity.

Effects of Opioid Treatment Programs on Child Well-Being

TL;DR: The authors showed that after a county opened an OTP, methadone dispensing increased and emergency department visits related to opioid overdose decreased there, offering evidence of the success of these programs.

Effects of Vertical Integration Reform on Primary Healthcare Institutions in China: Evidence From a Longitudinal Study.

TL;DR: Wang et al. as discussed by the authors evaluated the empirical effects of vertical integration reform on PHIs in China, and examined variations across integration intensity (tight integration vs. loose collaboration), and concluded that vertical integration (especially tight integration) in China significantly contributed to strengthening primary healthcare in terms of inpatient services and quality of hypertension and diabetes care, providing empirical evidence to other countries on integrating primary healthcare-based health systems.
