Journal ArticleDOI

Computer Simulations of Biaxial Nematics

TL;DR: An overview of the simulation work performed so far is given, and relying on the recent experimental findings, focuses on the still unanswered questions which will determine the future challenges in the field.
Journal ArticleDOI

An atomistic description of the nematic and smectic phases of 4-n-octyl-4' cyanobiphenyl (8CB).

TL;DR: The results of atomistic molecular dynamics simulations of 4-n-octyl-4' cyanobiphenyl (8CB) on samples of 750 and 3000 molecules show the spontaneous formation of the nematic phase and then of smectic layers by gradually cooling down from the isotropic phase.
Journal ArticleDOI

Superellipsoid-based, Real Symmetric Traceless Tensor Glyphs Motivated by Nematic Liquid Crystal Alignment Visualization

TL;DR: A glyph-based method for visualizing the nematic liquid crystal alignment tensor based upon physically-linked metrics, not offsets of the eigenvalues, which can visualize any real symmetric traceless tensor.
Journal ArticleDOI

On the Cartesian definition of orientational order parameters

TL;DR: It is shown that it is possible to build a fully Cartesian theory of the orientational order parameters which is consistent with the traditional spherical tensor approach, and a symmetric version of the Saupe super-matrix is proposed which is fully consistent with that definition.
Journal ArticleDOI

Lipid-gramicidin interactions: Dynamic structure of the boundary lipid by 2D-ELDOR

TL;DR: 2D-ELDOR, with its enhanced spectral resolution to dynamic structure as compared with continuous-wave electron spin resonance, provides a reliable and useful way of studying lipid-protein interactions and supporting their model for GA aggregation and H(II) phase formation for high GA concentrations.
