TLDR
The role of natural and damped convection during the thermally controlled solidification of tin and aluminium alloys in a toroidal mold was studied in this article, where it was shown that a stationary and uniform magnetic field parallel to the gravity field was caused by a stationary magnetic field.

Buoyancy driven convection in a rectangular enclosure with a transverse magnetic field

TL;DR: In this article, an analytical solution to the equations of magnetohydrodynamics that can be used to model the effect of a transverse magnetic field on buoyancy driven convection in a two-dimensional cavity was proposed.

Effect of magnetic field on natural convection flow in a liquid gallium filled square cavity for linearly heated side wall(s)

TL;DR: In this paper, a numerical study of the effect of the magnetic field with inclined angle on the flow and heat transfer rate of liquid gallium in a square cavity is presented, where the penalty finite element method with bi-quadratic rectangular elements is used to solve the non-dimensional governing equations.
Journal ArticleDOI

Natural Convection Heat Transfer in a Rectangular Enclosure With a Transverse Magnetic Field

TL;DR: In this article, the effect of a transverse magnetic field on buoyancy-driven convection in a shallow rectangular cavity is numerically investigated (horizontal Bridgman configuration), where the enclosure is insulated on top and bottom walls while it is heated from one side and cooled from the other.
Journal ArticleDOI

Numerical investigation of natural convection in a rectangular cavity under different directions of uniform magnetic field

TL;DR: In this paper, a second-order compact finite difference algorithm, involving a secondorder compact scheme for the streamfunction-velocity (ψ−−u) form of Navier-Stokes equations and a fourth-order finite difference (FDF) algorithm for the energy equation, is employed to solve the steady-state laminar magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) natural convection problems.

Effect of induced electric field on magneto-natural convection in a vertical cylindrical annulus filled with liquid potassium

TL;DR: In this article, a vertical cylindrical annulus formed by two coaxial cylinders filled with liquid potassium is studied numerically, and the authors show that flow is axisymmetric in the absence of the magnetic field; but by applying the horizontal magnetic field, it becomes asymmetric.

Elimination of Solute Banding in Indium Antimonide Crystals by Growth in a Magnetic Field

TL;DR: In this article, the authors used a vertical dc magnetic field to damp the thermal convection in the molten sample to suppress turbulence, thereby eliminating the temperature fluctuations in the liquid that cause the solute bands.

The effect of an externally imposed magnetic field on buoyancy driven flow in a rectangular cavity

TL;DR: In this article, a numerical solution has been presented, describing the transient development of the fluid flow field and the temperature distribution in a rectangular cavity in the presence of an imposed magnetic field.

Local velocity and mass transfer measurements in molten metals using an incorporated magnet probe

TL;DR: In this paper, a probe permitting the determination of the velocity magnitude and direction at every point for a steady or time-varying state within a molten metal is described, based on an experimental study of the flow of a liquid metal around a cylindrical magnet.
Journal ArticleDOI

Melting and solidification of a metal system in a rectangular cavity

TL;DR: In this article, the role of natural convection on solid-liquid interface motion during melting and solidification of Lipowitz metal in a rectangular cavity was studied, and measurements of both temperature distributions and temperature fluctuations were used as a qualitative indication of the natural convective flow regimes and structures of melt during phase transformation.
