TLDR
The data support the suggestion that extra axes add ‘goodness’ to symmetrical patterns but not in a monotonic fashion.Abstract:
It has been postulated that as the number of axes of symmetry in a pattern increases, so pattern ‘goodness’ increases. Recently, a distinction was made between two different theoretical accounts of regularity or ‘goodness’ in relation to patterns with mirror symmetry: the ‘transformational’ and the ‘holographic’ models. It was argued that the former predicts a ‘goodness’ ordering of four > three > two > one whereas the latter predicts four > two > three > one, where ‘>’ means greater regularity or goodness. In three experiments, we have tested these predictions. In experiment 1, we measured percentage correct and reaction time to dot patterns which had one, two, three, or four axes of symmetry and were flashed for 150 ms. Experiment 2 was identical except that patterns were presented for 2000 ms. In experiment 3, dot patterns were replaced by solid shapes which also had one, two, three, or four axes of symmetry. Although it was found that stimuli with four axes clearly allowed superior performance to that...read more

Selective searching while driving: the role of experience in hazard detection and general surveillance.
TL;DR: Novice drivers were found to rely more than experienced drivers upon their internal mirror, even when the lane-changing manoeuvre required information about traffic in the lane best reflected in the external, door-mounted mirror.

Behind the Looking-Glass: A Review on Human Symmetry Perception
TL;DR: Evidence seems to converge towards the idea that symmetry detection is subserved by a preprocessing stage involving spatial filters followed by information integration across the visual field in higher-tier cortical areas.

Just how stable are stable aesthetic features? Symmetry, complexity, and the jaws of massive familiarization

TL;DR: Using both group- and individual-level analyses, the complex and dynamic effects of basic visual features on aesthetic judgment were explored, showing that symmetry and complexity are indeed powerful determinants of aesthetic judgment.

Inspecting pictures for information to verify a sentence: Eye movements in general encoding and in focused search.
TL;DR: Two experiments used a sentence–picture verification task in which statements about photographs of natural scenes were read in order to make a true/false decision about the validity of the sentence, and in which eye movements were recorded.

Detection of Bilateral Symmetry in Complex Biological Images
TL;DR: Two experiments to determine whether stimulus orientation also affects detection of the low levels of naturally occurring asymmetry in complex biological images demonstrated that this phenomenon is robust despite considerable variation in image complexity.

TL;DR: The detection of mirror symmetry has been investigated by measuring discriminability (d') between two populations of dot displays that contain mirror pairs and random dots in different proportions.

Detection of visual symmetries
TL;DR: A critical examination of the extensive literature about the effects on symmetry detection of several major factors such as the orientation of the symmetry axis, the location of the stimulus in the visual field, grouping, and perturbations is carried out.

Detection of symmetry
TL;DR: The results suggest interference effects arising from certain symmetries are more difficult to reject than others, depending on the type of symmetry to be detected.

Goodness of Visual Regularities: A Nontransformational Approach
TL;DR: This theoretical study presents a new analysis, based on the recently developed concept of holographic regularity, that applies to the intrinsic character of regularity and specifies the unique formal status of perceptually relevant regularities.

The salience of vertical symmetry.
TL;DR: Additional data showed that the salience of vertical and horizontal axes of symmetry can be manipulated extensively by varying the range of stimuli presented, presumably by manipulating the scanning or attentional strategy adopted by the observer.
