Abstract
: The development of the plastic strain in a V-grooved flat plate under longitudinal shear was followed from the elastic through the partially plastic to the fully plastic condition for a non-strainhardening material. The region of plastic flow develops monotonically. Adjacent to the zone of deformation in the fully plastic case there is a region where limited plastic deformation has occurred. The results for the growth of the plastic zone were compared with predictions based on the elastic-plastic solution for an infinite plate and the elastic solution for a finite plate. Agreement is good at low stress levels. At high stress levels, a relatively simple empirical equation, satisfying over-all equilibrium, is proposed. Predictions based on elasticity theory alone are shown to be seriously in error. (Author)

A Path Independent Integral and the Approximate Analysis of Strain Concentration by Notches and Cracks

TL;DR: In this paper, an integral is exhibited which has the same value for all paths surrounding a class of notches in two-dimensional deformation fields of linear or non-linear elastic materials.

Singular behaviour at the end of a tensile crack in a hardening material

TL;DR: In this paper, a total deformation theory of plasticity, in conjunction with two hardening stress-strain relations, is used to determine the dominant singularity at the tip of a crack in a tension field.

Multiaxial fatigue of V-notched steel specimens: a non-conventional application of the local energy method

TL;DR: In this article, the multi-axial fatigue strength of notched specimens made of 39NiCrMo3 hardened and tempered steel was investigated under two nominal load ratios, R=−1 and R= 0, taking into account the influence of the biaxiality ratio, λ=τa/σa.

An assumed displacement hybrid finite element model for linear fracture mechanics

TL;DR: In this article, the elastic stress intensity factors for arbitrary-shaped cracks in plane stress and plane strain problems were calculated using an assumed displacement hybrid finite element model, where the unknowns in the final algebraic system of equations are the nodal displacements and the elastic tensor intensity factors.

Bibliography of information on mechanics of structural failure (hydrogen embrittlement, protective coatings, composite materials, NDE)

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors present a bibliography consisting of approximately 1,600 reference citations related to four problem areas in the mechanics of failure in aerospace structures: hydrogen embrittlement, protective coatings, composite materials, and non-destructive evaluation.
