The sleep of a group of Ss used to regular exercise both while they were exercising and over a relatively prolonged period of time was studied.
Abstract
DELTA (slow wave, stages 3 and 4) sleep has been widely thought of as deep sleep according to criteria involving cerebral responsiveness or ease of arousal. 1-5 On the other hand, it is commonly felt that exercise promotes sound or deep sleep, a notion supported by recent experimental studies which indicate the delta sleep-promoting effects of exercise both in animals 6,7 and man. 8 Although it was shown in this laboratory 8 that subjects (Ss) who exercise regularly have more delta sleep on days with exercise than on days without it, it was not possible to determine the duration of the effects of exercise on sleep since the Ss never went without exercise for more than two consecutive days. Hence, we decided to study the sleep of a group of Ss used to regular exercise both while they were exercising and over a relatively prolonged

Effects of physical exercise on anxiety, depression, and sensitivity to stress: a unifying theory.

TL;DR: The pattern of evidence suggests the theory that exercise training recruits a process which confers enduring resilience to stress, which allows the effects of exercise to be understood in terms of existing psychobiological knowledge, and it can thereby provide the theoretical base that is needed to guide future research in this area.

The effects of physical activity on sleep: a meta-analytic review

TL;DR: A meta-analytical review of the effects of acute and regular exercise on sleep, incorporating a range of outcome and moderator variables, reveals that acute exercise has small beneficial effects on total sleep time, sleep onset latency, sleep efficiency, stage 1 sleep, and slow wave sleep.

Exercise dependence: a systematic review

TL;DR: More systematic theory based research is required to understand the precipitating and perpetuating factors associated with exercise dependence, as well as effective treatment regimens.

A biopsychosocial model of disordered eating and the pursuit of muscularity in adolescent boys.

TL;DR: This review provides an evaluation of the correlates and/or risk factors associated with disordered eating and the pursuit of muscularity among adolescent boys, finding similar factors and processes are associated with both behavioral problems.

The first night effect: an EEG study of sleep.

TL;DR: The electroencephalographic records from 43 subjects who slept for four consecutive nights in a laboratory environment showed that the first night of laboratory sleep contains more awake periods and less Stage I-rapid eye movement sleep.

Auditory Awakening Thresholds in Rem and Nrem Sleep Stages

TL;DR: A modification of the method of constant stimuli was used in an apparently successful attempt to minimize the incorporation of the experimental stimuli into the mental activity of the sleeper, and the possible physiological determinants of the awakening response were discussed.

Exercise and Sleep Patterns in College Athletes

TL;DR: Visual stage-of-sleep analysis of the sleep EEGs of 10 college athletes under three different conditions of exercise suggests a general positive relationship between exercise and the amount of slow-wave (delta) sleep in a night's sleep.
