Feasibility of partial-denitrification/ anammox for pharmaceutical wastewater treatment in a hybrid biofilm reactor.

TLDR
In this article, a novel approach integrating partial denitrification with anaerobic ammonia oxidation (PD/A) in a sequencing biofilm batch reactor (SBBR) was proposed and demonstrated to be efficient to treat the bismuth nitrate and bistuth potassium citrate manufacturing wastewater, containing ammonia (NH4+-N) and nitrate (NO3−-N), which achieved a relatively stable TN removal efficiency of 81.9% to 80.8%.

Microalgal-bacterial granular sludge process for sustainable municipal wastewater treatment: Simple organics versus complex organics

TL;DR: In this paper , the average COD, nitrogen and phosphorus removal efficiencies for wastewater containing simple/complex organic matter were 75.2/84.9, 96.6/89.3% and 76.2 /85.3%, respectively, showing that a carbon-neutral target for wastewater treatment by microalgal-bacterial granular sludge is possible.

Biofilm exopolysaccharides: a strong and sticky framework.

TL;DR: Wimpenny & Colasanti (1997) have suggested that biofilm structure is largely determined by the concentration of substrate, and postulated that such differences also validate at least three conceptual models of biofilms – heterogeneous mosaics, structures penetrated by water channels, and dense confluent bioFilms.

Influence of loosely bound extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) on the flocculation, sedimentation and dewaterability of activated sludge.

TL;DR: Although EPS is essential to sludge floc formation, excessive EPS in the form of LB-EPS could weaken cell attachment and the floc structure, resulting in poor bioflocculation, greater cell erosion and retarded sludge-water separation.
