TLDR
In this article, a population balance equation that governs the floc size distribution in turbulent flow, incorporating both the splitting and erosion mechanisms of floc breakage has been presented, and the experimentally determined size distributions are then fit to those computed from the population balance equations, using constrained nonlinear least squares.

The synthesis of cost optimal heat exchanger networks. An industrial review of the state of the art

TL;DR: The industrial heat exchanger network synthesis (HENS) problem is very complex and involves combinatorial problems in the "matching" between hot and cold streams to enhance heat recovery, temperature dependent physical and transport properties, the choice of flow configuration and materials of construction for the heat exchangers, the combination of hard and soft problem data (some target temperatures must be met, while others may be varied within limits if this is of advantage for the total process economy), various kinds of constraints (forbidden and compulsory matches) and different types of streams (liquid, vapour and

Shear-induced flocculation: The evolution of floc structure and the shape of the size distribution at steady state

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors studied the flocculation of polystyrene particles in a stirred tank at various shear rates (63−129 s−1) and aluminum sulfate, Al2(SO4)3 16H2O, flocculant concentrations.

Aggregation of Particles, Settling Velocity of Mud Flocs A Review

TL;DR: In this article, a review of aggregation phenomena for fine-grained sediments in estuarine systems is given, and it is shown that the aggregation of fine sediment particles, resulting in much larger settling velocities, plays an important role in the fine sediment dynamics in the estuaries.
Journal ArticleDOI

Approximate Population Balance Equations for Aggregation-Breakage Processes.

TL;DR: A number of approximate methods for modeling aggregation of particulate suspensions have been extended to simulate breakup as well and have been tested by comparison with rigorous solutions for conditions representative of most aggregation-fragmentation processes.

Physical characteristics of flocs—I. The floc density function and aluminium floc

TL;DR: In this article, a modified Stokes equation was used to measure the settling velocity and diameter of a discrete floc in a quiescent water column, and the floc density was calculated by introducing the measured values and some constants such as water density and viscosity into a suitable settling velocity equation.

A model for transitional breakage probability of droplets in agitated lean liquid-liquid dispersions

TL;DR: In this article, a model for transitional breakage probability of droplets in agitated lean fiquid-liquid dispersions is proposed based on the mechanism of breakage of droppers due to their oscillations resulting from relative velocity fluctuations.

Drop-breakage in agitated liquid—liquid dispersions

TL;DR: In this paper, experimental data from batch vessels on cumulative volumetric drop-size distributions at various times are shown to yield useful information on probabilities of droplet-breakup as a function of drop size.
