Geochemistry of shales from the Archean (~3.0 Ga) Buhwa Greenstone Belt, Zimbabwe: Implications for provenance and source-area weathering

TLDR
In this paper, an analysis of the phyllites from the Archean Buhwa Greenstone Belt, Zimbabwe, were deposited on a stable cratonic platform and the results indicated that the source dominantly consisted of tonalite with less common occurrences mafic volcanic rocks and granite.

Chemical weathering indices applied to weathering profiles developed on heterogeneous felsic metamorphic parent rocks

TL;DR: The Weathering Index of Parker (WIP) as mentioned in this paper is the most appropriate index for application to weathering profiles on heterogeneous (and homogeneous) parent rock, because it includes only the highly mobile alkali and alkaline earth elements in its formulation, yielding values that differ greatly from those of the parent rock.
Journal ArticleDOI

Weathering of granodioritic crust, long-term storage of elements in weathering profiles, and petrogenesis of siliciclastic sediments

TL;DR: The Toorongo Granodiorite, Australia, is similar to the average upper continental crust (AUCC) and the weathering characteristics of the profile provide insight into large-scale chemical weathering of the upper crust as mentioned in this paper.

Geochemistry of Sandstones from the Upper Miocene Kudankulam Formation, Southern India: Implications for Provenance, Weathering, and Tectonic Setting

TL;DR: In this article, Petrographic, major, trace, and rare earth element compositions of sandstones from the upper Miocene Kudankulam Formation, Southern India, have been investigated to determine their provenance, tectonic setting, and weathering conditions.
Journal ArticleDOI

On Archean granites, greenstones, cratons and tectonics: does the evidence demand a verdict?

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors review geologic evidence for Archean plate tectonic processes within the framework of geophysical, geochemical and experimental observations and conclude that the early Archean was not excessively hotter than today.
Journal ArticleDOI

Evaluation of metal contamination in coastal sediments of the Bay of Bengal, India: geochemical and statistical approaches.

TL;DR: Both major elemental and trace metal concentrations indicated that the sediments represent weathered products of granite and charnockite, and shell fragments in the surface sediments are likely act as a carrier phase for nondetrital metals.

The continental crust: Its composition and evolution

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors describe the composition of the present upper crust and deal with possible compositions for the total crust and the inferred composition of lower crust, and the question of the uniformity of crustal composition throughout geological time is discussed.

Early Proterozoic climates and plate motions inferred from major element chemistry of lutites

TL;DR: The early Proterozoic Huronian Supergroup of the north shore of Lake Huron (Fig. 1) is a thick succession of sedimentary and volcanic rocks deposited between about 2,500 and 2,100 Myr ago as discussed by the authors.

Unraveling the effects of potassium metasomatism in sedimentary rocks and paleosols, with implications for paleoweathering conditions and provenance

TL;DR: In this article, the authors used ternary diagrams to determine the amount of K addition, premetasomatized sediment composition, and composition of provenance areas, which can be compared with the mineralogy of recent soil profiles and thus, climate and topographic conditions determined for past weathering events.
Journal ArticleDOI

Prediction of some weathering trends of plutonic and volcanic rocks based on thermodynamic and kinetic considerations

TL;DR: In this paper, the proportions of Ca, Na and K released by feldspars of plutonic rocks (granites to gabbros) to weathering solutions were predicted.

Formation and Diagenesis of Weathering Profiles

TL;DR: In this paper, the predicted bulk compositional changes are corroborated by studies of recent weathering profiles developed on a variety of plutonic and volcanic rocks under different climatic regimes.
