Human development, public expenditure and economic growth: a system dynamics approach

TLDR
In this article, a system dynamics approach is used to model, identify and help manage the development path of human development and economic growth in Pakistan given alternative policies for public expenditure on HD and economic indicators.
Abstract
Purpose – It is now widely recognized that human development (HD) and economic growth (EG) are intertwined in two‐way feedback processes either leading to an upward spiral of development or a poverty trap. This concept is used to overcome one of the limitations of a previous study by Qureshi which assumes exogenous gross domestic product (GDP). With endogenous GDP formulation, the impact of public expenditure on HD and EG in Pakistan is examined.Design/methodology/approach – System dynamics approach is used to model, identify and help manage the development path of HD and EG in Pakistan given alternative policies for public expenditure on HD and EG. For this purpose the model endogenously determines path of population cohorts, and education, health and economic indicators.Findings – The simulation results suggest that the current level of public expenditure on HD is extremely low and any further decrease will have irreversible negative impact on HD and economic indicators, even if the resources so saved a...

The dynamic association between healthcare spending, CO2 emissions, and human development index in OECD countries: evidence from panel VAR model

TL;DR: In this article, the authors employed a panel vector autoregression based on the generalized method of moments estimations to test the bidirectional association among healthcare expenditures, carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, and human development index (HDI).

Increasing Returns and Long-Run Growth

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors present a fully specified model of long-run growth in which knowledge is assumed to be an input in production that has increasing marginal productivity, which is essentially a competitive equilibrium model with endogenous technological change.

Government spending in a simple model of endogenous growth

TL;DR: This article extended these models to include tax- financed government services that affect production or utility, and showed that growth and saving rates fall with an increase in utility-type expenditures; the two rates rise initially with productive government expenditures but subsequently decline.

Government Spending in a Simple Model of Endogenous Growth

TL;DR: In this article, tax-financed government services that affect production or utility are extended to include tax-supported government services, and the two rates rise initially with productive government expenditures but subsequently decline with an increase in utility-type expenditures.

Formal aspects of model validity and validation in system dynamics

TL;DR: This paper focuses on the formal aspects of validation and presents a taxonomy of various aspects and steps of formal model validation, including structure-oriented behavior tests, which seem to be the most promising direction for research on model validation.
