Journal ArticleDOI

Biological and clinical significance of haptoglobin polymorphism in humans.

TL;DR: The strong genetic pressure favoring the 2-2 phenotype suggests an important role of haptoglobin in human pathology and is explained by a phenotype-dependent modulation of oxidative stress and prostaglandin synthesis.
Journal ArticleDOI

Haptoglobin dampens endotoxin-induced inflammatory effects both in vitro and in vivo

TL;DR: The present data suggest that haptoglobin regulates monocyte activation following LPS stimulation, and may generate a feedback effect which dampens the severity of cytokine release and protects against endotoxin‐induced effects.
Journal ArticleDOI

Effect of the Haptoglobin Phenotype on the Size of a Myocardial Infarct

TL;DR: It is suggested that H p 2-2 patients have more severe myocardial infarctions than Hp 1-1 and Hp 2-1 patients, and no difference in the distribution of haptoglobin phenotype was found between patients who had a myocardIAL infarction and healthy subjects, indicating that Hp2-2 does not predispose to the occurrence of infarition.
Journal ArticleDOI

Hypohaptoglobinemia associated with familial epilepsy

TL;DR: It is hypothesized that hypohaptoglobinemia, either inherited, or acquired via traumatic processes, may prevent efficient clearance of interstitial hemoglobin from the central nervous system, thereby predisposing these people to encephalic inflammation and the appearance of seizure disorders.
Journal ArticleDOI

A comparison of plasma prostaglandin levels in term and preterm labour.

TL;DR: In both term andPreterm labour there was a rise in PGFM levels with increasing cervical dilatation although the mean values tended to be lower during preterm labour, which may provide an explanation for the effectiveness of prostaglandin synthetase inhibitors in suppressing myometrial activity in pre term labour.
